Upset and not gonna take it anymore!

When you’re not looking, the world has a way of knocking you on your butt. I think that’s a big reason why I try to keep my blog light and positive. I like to give readers something to hold onto in the dark and inspire them to fight for another day.

I’ve written a few posts on President Donald Trump and his policies, but I generally tend to avoid polarizing topics. Yet, the news on this Labor Day and in recent weeks has been dismal and I need to get a few things off my chest. Here’s several things that have bugged me.

–Republicans used to believe in:

  • The Constitution
  • The Justice System
  • Law and Order
  • States’ Rights
  • Freedom of Speech
  • Checks and Balances
  • Free markets
  • Limited Government Intervention
  • Low taxes
  • Reducing the Debt
  • Strong national defense
  • Strong partnerships with Allies

Somehow under Trump, these things have slipped by the wayside.

For example, I’m not sure how you can say you support Law Enforcement and Law and Order and then support the January 6 pardons. It’s not possible in my mind to explain the two. In fact, The Trump Administration offered military funeral honors Capitol rioter Ashli Babbit. How is that right? State’s Rights? On one hand Republicans send the abortion issue back to the states to decide, but then sit on their hands when President Trump calls up the National Guard to invade Washington, D.C. and potentially other cities. Limited Government? Heck Trump has the Federal Government in business with Intel and the recent purchase of Paramount. And finally, Trump conveniently forgets that Putin is the epitome of a bully and started the war in Ukraine.

–Who’s at the door? We have immigration challenges. I won’t argue that, but we’ve turned “give me your tired, your poor” into “bad boy, bad boy whatcha gonna do when they come for you.” The clandestine way that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents wear masks and conceal their identities during enforcement operations has turned our society into a police state. It’s eroded public trust and raised fears. Where’s the accountability? Where’s the due process?

–Protecting our kids. A crazy guy tried to blow up a plane with a shoe and the whole world had to take their shoes off before boarding a plane. Meanwhile, since Sandy Hook there have been more than 200 school shootings in the U.S. resulting in over 300 dead children – a whole plane’s worth – but we continue to do nothing about guns or mental illness in America.?

It gets better. The Trump administration cut funding that would have been used to identify potential mass shooters from Minnesota a month before a shooter opened fire at a church, killing two kids. The funding wouldn’t have touched law abiding citizen’s guns. It should have been something that even gun proponents would have been on board with since it dealth with mental Health. But, since the program originated in a different administration, Trump and company viewed the program as partisan.

You can’t make this stuff up. Either we care about our kids or we don’t.

–Flag burning. My father served in the US Army. My son served. I could never burn the flag. The memory of the 2,500 American soldiers who died on D-Day during the Normandy invasion, would prevent me from ever touching a flag in that way.

Yet, I understand that good citizenship goes beyond hugging the flag. I understand that the U.S. Constitution protects everyone’s rights to free speech. Others have said it better:

  • “America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You’ve gotta want it bad, ’cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say, “You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.” You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.” — The movie The American President.

It get’s better. How about these words of wisdom from a famous Liberal radical.

  • “We have a First Amendment which says the right of free speech shall not be abridged. It is addressed in particular to speech critical of the government. Burning the flag is a form of expression. Burning a flag is a symbol that expresses an idea.” –conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

–Government data. I saw that drug deaths in the U.S. have plunged dramatically and steadily since the summer of 2023, according to the latest preliminary data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That sounds good, but unfortunately thanks to Trump’s changes, I’m suspicious of any reporting now that comes out of the government.

It could be the government information on vaccines or economic data. I have no faith or trust. Trump fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics because he didn’t like the data, why should I believe what comes out of his administration?

–Trump’s lies and name calling. The Trump Administration was in a tizzy last week that California Governor Newsom was making traction mocking him. Does Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt think we’re clueless? Trump has made insult politics an art form. There’s even a Wikipedia page that tracks his names, everything from “Low Energy Jeb” to “Alfred E. Neuman” to describe Jeb Bush and Pete Buttigieg. In more recent days, he’s complained about “ABC fake news” and “Gavin Newscum.”

Where’s the dignity and respect of the office? Where’s the leadership? Where’s the concern and empathy for others?

–Freedom of religion. The First Amendment in the U.S. prevents the government from establishing an official religion on favoring one religion over another. It protects our rights to practice our faith as we chose. Despite these protections, states like Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma have passed laws mandating the displays and teaching of the Ten Commandments. The proponents in these states are banking on a more conservative -learning Supreme Court to overturn past rulings and allow religious expression to be incorporated into public education. I’m a Catholic and I still think this is wrong. It discriminates against students with different beliefs. Public schools should not be promoting or endorsing one religion over another.

–Time to look elsewhere? Thanks in large part to my rural hometown roots, I grew up a fiscal conservative. Yet, Republicans continue to push me more and more to other options and possibly changing my party affiliation. Their actions show that they care little about normal everyday people like me. All they care about is getting Trump’s approval and the financial contributions that come with it. Will anyone in the Republican Party besides Liz Cheney and former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger stand up to Trump?

And oh yea, most of these things are from the past several weeks. Don’t get me started on the past six months.

Actor Jeff Daniels summed up my thoughts to a T: “Under Trump we’ve lost decency. We’ve lost civility. We’ve lost respect for the rule of law. We’ve normalized verbal abuse and bullying. He is everything that is wrong with America.”

Yes, we are better than this! 2028 can’t come fast enough!

  1. Brian, you’ve been doing an admirable job of trying to keep your blog posts light and/or positive in the face of what is truly an existential struggle for the soul of your country. This outpouring from your heart says it all. Hopefully 2026 will start to tilt the scales, and another of the 3 branches of govt will start to take their constitutional responsibilities seriously. 2028 seems a long way away.

  2. This is so perfect, Brian! You have brilliantly put words to the wrong turns this administration is making — and how far it is from the Republican values. I cannot fathom why no one is standing up to him.

When we lived in the Philippines, Marcos’ secretary of defense was supposedly ambushed in his car and it prompted Marcos to declare martial law. I think the martial law stayed into effect for 14 years. Later it came out the ambush was staged. It’s starting to feel like that could happen here.

Thanks for calling this stuff out – it helps to keep the record straight and remind us that we’re not crazy for thinking this is all crazy. I’m still chuckling about “that liberal” Scalia! 🙂

  3. 2028 can’t come fast enough indeed, Brian. I agree with all your points, Brian – and I also hate the strain the Trump administration has put between Canada and the US. All so unnecessary and ego driven.

  4. I agree with you, Brian, and I hope it helps to express your thoughts and feelings. I realize how hard that can be. I live in one of the smallest, most remote towns in my state and I dare not speak up. Instead, I feel forced into silence as others come in to my place of work and feel somehow compelled to share their maga views. It’s as though my own thoughts don’t matter and because I am polite they believe I agree with them. I do not! I just realize I can make absolutely no difference. And I don’t want to make things worse. I try to show who I am by example. If I am anywhere other than at work and the conversation veers toward maga, I quietly slip away. This doesn’t make me proud. 🥲

  5. Thank you for putting into words so exquisitely all the things that have me in turmoil. Every morning it is something new and ridiculous and I could go on and on, but you know!

  6. Excellent post, Brian. Please write more on this topic. In case some don’t know, Scalia was a conservative Supreme Court justice.
Also, a word to those who feel helpless. A number of writers on Substack offer guidance in that department including calling your Congressmen, Senators, writing postcards, financial contributions however small, attending rallies, keeping well informed, and more. You can also subscribe to Indivisible, nationally and locally. There are many who will give us support and vice versa.

  7. DAMN Brian, you dropped the mic my friend. 🎤 I know that we try to dance around these issues and remain positive, but you nailed every point with every well-thought out fact. I applaud you my friend, because some may look the other way and remain complicit, but they have no idea about how these reckless decisions and bullyisms are going to affect them and their families. 😠

I applaud your bravery and thank you for speaking out on what the hell is going on to make America abusive, ignorant, evil, and fraudulent once again. 👏🏼 I am so there with you my friend. I don’t do facism and dictatorship either! 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Thank you for this!

  8. I try to stay away from politics in my writing because: 1. Others are doing it a hell of a lot better than I can. 2. It ain’t funny – not at all. 3. No matter which side you are on, you alienate half your readers. That being said, I agree with every word you said on this one. Some days I feel like if I watch the news my head will explode. Maybe it is our duty to speak up about the atrocities or, maybe we are supposed to provide a bit of escape from the insanity. I don’t know. Oh, I thought of one more thing. 4. You can’t reuse columns written on current events. *sigh*

    1. Yea, I generally shy away from it, but I just felt like I had to raise it up a notch for my own sanity. Needed to let off steam. I’m sure I offended someone. So be it. It’s what I’m feeling and I promised myself when I created this blog that I would be myself — warts and all.

  9. As much as I appreciate your positivity, you know what I like better? Telling it like it is. The Republican party has devolved into an absolute joke these days. I can no longer trust anyone who votes for them.

    1. Positivity! I’m just trying to follow Wynne and your lead — the Positivity Twins. Ha ha. Nah, you’re right, there are times when ya gotta keep it real. I’m hoping for better days. I know there’s not much proof out there but feel like it’s coming. Just need to speak truth to power and keep fighting.

  10. Wow, Brian, you wrote everything my husband and I have been feeling. Yes, what about the last six months? It’s mind-boggling how he can be supported. Everything he does and says is unpresidential. You make so many great points, and 2028 couldn’t come fast enough! Thanks for voicing your frustration. You are not alone!

  11. This is such a polarising subject, Brian, which is why I don’t do politics on my photo blog. I have always been a registered Republican and think of myself as a far-right Conservative who believes in our Constitution.

I voted for President Trump but am dismayed by some of his decisions. Regardless, a vote for Kamala/Biden would have been horrid. Just one American’s perspective. God bless America! 🇺🇸🙏🏻✝️

    1. I’m surprised to hear that you’re surprised by any of his decisions. He’s following the project 2025 blueprint. And yes, I have to disagree with you on Kamala. I don’t think she would’ve been horrid. She’s smart, she had a plan. And Even at her most progressive, I believe she would’ve have been better than what we have now. And to be perfectly honest with you, I think she would’ve been great. But that’s neither here nor there. And yes, that’s the great thing about America — at least still today — we get our say at the ballot box.

      1. The ballot box, yes! The first thing that he did really grinds my gears, how dare he place a tariff on Canada! We have been allies in wars, why slap Canadians like this? I’m done. 😂 🇺🇸

  12. Well said, Brian. All I’m going to say is that he was a republican, then democrat and then independent. There is a reason why he decided to return to the Republican Party and run for office. He saw an opportunity and took it to advance his personal ambitions. The last time I heard him speak was when the Zelensky debacle in the Oval Office. I read the news and what he is doing but I can’t listen to him anymore.

  13. Presidents come and go (I hope) but the political, social and cultural divide this one has created will be with us for years. The Republican Party is dead, this is a cult. They’ve killed common decency, respect and empathy and replaced it with fear, hatred and armed soldiers in our streets. If half the country supports this? I fear for democracy, I really do.

  14. Yes!!! And Jeff Daniel’s and Brian said it perfectly!!!
