Bill Gates famously dropped out of Harvard in 1975 to help found Microsoft, becoming one of the richest people in the world with a net worth of $114 billion. Following in his footsteps three decades later, Mark Zuckerberg quit school to found Facebook.

I’m thinking this week about Gates, Zuckerberg, and other quitters like them. The second Friday in January has become known as “Quitter’s Day.” It’s the day according to data analysts, who study these kinds of things, when people are most prone to re-evaluate their New Year’s resolutions and throw in the towel.
The Day has become so well known that Apple even has an advertising campaign around the day. Despite the challenge, experts say the best way to see a New Year’s goal to fruition is to keep things simple:
- Set realistic goals: Break down resolutions into smaller, achievable tasks to maintain a sense of progress.
- Work on your motivation. Align resolutions with personal values and focus on why your motivated to seeing it to completion.
- Celebrate small wins.
- Roll with the waves. Adjust where you need to, be resilient, and keep focus on long-term progress.
On Quitter’s Day, we all need to a little encouragement. I know I do. Here’s four classics to inspire and to keep you going when the going gets tough.
Don’t Stop Believing — Journey
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough — Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
I’m So Excited — Pointer Sisters
Hall of Fame — The Script

That’s why it’s best not to make resolutions on January 1. How about setting goals on a day outside of this Doomsday date?

Just to be a contrarian . . . I think I need to start making my new years resolutions the second Friday in January. Ha, ha.

Hahaha! I agree. It’s better than the 1st, or a Monday. Start on a random day that has no particular significance and remove the pressure.

I started to watch the videos but then I quit. That’s the point of today, right?

There’s one smart aleck in every crowd. Ha, ha. I’m kidding. You’re absolutely right Mark. Quitting while the getting is good. Maybe I’ll quit my job today. Think my boss will get the joke. Hmmm, I might be out of luck. Ha, ha.

You might want to rethink that plan, Brian…

Great insight, Brian. It is indeed food for thought worth pondering. I recently had a similar trail of thought, and on the subject of dropping out of things that fail to inspire us, and instead dropping in on the things that do, I found Steve Jobs’ Commencement Speech of 2005 profoundly inspiring. If I may, here’s a link to the tribute:

I’ve seen a good number of quotes over the years from Steve Jobs, but had never seen that commencement address. I’ve always loved his storytelling. Love how he puts it altogether here. Good stuff — “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Thanks for sharing.

Steve Jobs’ quotes fill a vast section of my quote collection and never fail to motivate and inspire me. Ironically, I am not an Apple user, yet his wisdom and visionary insight resonates with what I believe and aspire to achieve.
Thank you for always posting content worth reading, Brian. I truly like your blog, and your consistency is admirable. Efforts always pay off – even if the dots will only connect in hindsight. Keep up the good writing! 💪🏻

I love Jobs’ focus on innovation and the customer experience. After all these years, still many companies and leaders miss the mark. Thanks for the kind comments about my writing. I just try, as you say, to tell stories and write stuff that I like. I figure if I write about stuff I like . . . than someone out there will find it interesting too. As far as the volume or consistency, it really is a creative outlet. I find that the more creative with the blog than the more creative and on the mark I am in my job and other outlets. Kind of strange, but good! Thanks again, very much appreciated!

Gotta love this: “focus on why your motivated to seeing it to completion.” Someone famous I know said that… 😂 !!! I’m bee poppin to DON’T STOP as I “write”.. LOVE this song!!! Music.. YES! keeps us entertained. While those two are rich and famous and live in my hood, I’ve lost my mojo for either one of them. Loved Mellisa and Bill and then… .. don’t ask and don’t stop believing. No mountain for sure will keep me from being SOOOOO EXCITED! It was the hit song we played when I opened my aerobic studio, too long ago to say! Let me tell you, this wasn’t the video we watched in the day but I LOVE IT!
Great Post,Brian! 🥂🙌🏽👏🎬💓

Gates and Zuckerberg didn’t do so bad from their quitting decisions! 😆 Wish it worked out like that for more of us. It’ll be curious to see how the gym looks today compared to the mad rush of January 1! 😆
