Working together as a team

Sometimes the most vicious enemies can come work together and be the best of friends.

In July 1975, Apollo–Soyuz was the first crewed international space mission, carried out jointly by the United States and the Soviet Union. Millions of people around the world watched on television as a U.S. Apollo spacecraft at the height of the Cold War docked with a Soviet Soyuz capsule. The project, and its handshake in space on July 17, was a symbol of détente between the world’s two superpowers.

After 44 hours together, the two ships briefly separated, redocked a second time before going their separate ways. The Soviets remained in space for two more days, and the Americans for five, before coming home.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the horrible bloodshed that has occurred there has brought back some of the old conflicts and worries of war between the U.S. and Russia, but the Apollo-Soyuz mission remains a symbol and rallying cry that cooperation and collaboration are values worth working towards.
