Forget the Meaning of Life—Why Do Wasps Exist?

When I get to Heaven—hey, I’m thinking positive here—I have a few questions for the Big Guy, the all-knowing one. You know, the “Mystery of Life” questions we all have.

Some are heavy: Why is there pain and hurt? Why does one person live while another dies? What’s the purpose behind specific historical tragedies?

Those are all valid, but I’m also talking about the other big questions. The everyday mysteries that hit me all the time:

—The Great Burger Debate: The Big Mac, the Whopper, Dave’s Single, ShackBurger, In-N-Out’s Double-Double, or Five Guys? I need a divine ruling once and for all.

—A Great Get-Away? When the Supreme Being, the Creator, God, whatever you want to call him or her, needs to get away, where does he or she go? I have my favorites. You have yours. What about the divine one? Beach, mountains, or somewhere else?

—Soccer or Football: Soccer rules most of the planet with billions of fans, but American football and the National Football League, which kicks off its new season tonight with the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks, owns our weekends. Okay, maybe I’m talking like a close-minded American, but c’mon, it’s an important question. Which game is on the Big TV in the sky? I can’t help but feel like the Almighty appreciates a crushing quarterback sack when the game is on the line.

—The Sock Portal: I lost another sock in the washer the other day. Where is the alternate dimension where all these missing socks are hanging out?

—Selective Memory: Why does my brain vividly recall an embarrassing moment from elementary school? I can feel the cringe. My neck gets red to the touch just imaging the moment. Yet I completely forget why I just walked into the kitchen. What’s going on here?

—Wasps: Why, just why? You could ask the same about spiders, cockroaches, and a myriad of other bugs and animals, but wasps make me feel personally targeted. I swear they’re out of get me.

A warm, slightly humorous illustration of the Pearly Gates of Heaven — grand golden gates set against a soft, glowing sky with fluffy white clouds. A long winding line of people stretches out waiting to get in, with a warm golden light emanating from beyond the gates. The tone is lighthearted and whimsical, not overly religious — more like a classic New Yorker cartoon vibe.

—Great ’70s and ’80s Unsolved Mysteries: Sure, we eventually learned Kristin Shepard shot J.R. Ewing, but I still have real questions. Whatever happened to D.B. Cooper after he parachuted out of that Boeing 727 with $200K in cash? What really went on inside Area 51? And where are the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot hiding out? Are they world-champion hide-and-seek players, or what? What’s up with the Bermuda Triangle? Is it real or a hoax?

—Lines that never go down: Why does the line you switch to always immediately stop moving? Is there a divine traffic controller playing a game of psychological chicken with us? It happened to me just last week going through security at the Philadelphia International Airport. One lane was moving a little faster than the others. I pick it and, of course, it shut down to a crawl. Really God, are you trying to tell me something?

—PC or Mac? When St. Peter is checking that Master Invitee List at the Pearly Gates, is he running Windows or macOS? And if it’s a PC, how many times a day does Heaven have to restart for a system update?

—Goofy vs. Pluto: In Disney’s universe, they’re both dogs! Let me repeat that, they are both dogs. Why does Goofy get a turtleneck, pants, and a house, while Pluto has to walk on all fours and wear a collar? What did Pluto do to deserve that setup? Poor guy.

—The Superhero Debate: Batman’s mind, money, and skills, or Superman’s powers and weaknesses?

—Tupperware Lids: You buy six matching containers. Two months later, you have eight unmatched lids and four lidless bowls. How does that math even work?

Look, I’m sure St. Peter has a whole queue of people asking about the secrets of the cosmos and the ultimate meaning of life. But while everyone else is getting the grand tour of the place, you’ll find me in line asking for the definitive word on Five Guys versus In-N-Out, and why wasps exist. Priorities, people.

What about you? What’s the single most ridiculous, everyday mystery you’re planning to bring up in Heaven? Drop your questions in the comments—I might just need to add them to my list.

  1. Love all of this. Tupperware was created because we got tired of caring about losing that second sock in the washer….as for best burger? Add In’n’Out to the mix, take off the Whopper – their own ads even admit they are horrible! As always a very fun read!

    1. You scared me for a second. I thought I had forgotten In-N-Out. Yes, the whopper and the rest of the OG burger places are there simply because of tradition. I have not had an In-N-Out yet … I lead a sheltered life here in the East, but I suspect it’s at the top of the list for the big guy! I have to add that I had an amazing $10 burger at a local dive the other day that ranks as one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Just a hole in the wall but a great burger. Who would’ve guessed? 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎😎🍔🍔🍔🍔

  2. All interesting questions, Brian! Hopefully you don’t have to find out the answers from the source anytime soon. 🤣 I too would like to know where they vacation.

I also would love the opportunity to learn more and even experience a visit to the unknown parts of the universe. The mind is just blown thinking about its vastness.

    1. The vastness!! I didn’t even get into that. It’s too hard for my little brain to fathom. So big, yet so small all at the same time. Now you’ve got me thinking about a bunch of new questions
      —Life in outer space?
      —Why are space suits white?
      —Life on Mars?
—Did the cow really jump over the moon or did he have performance enhancing drugs -c’mon it had to be?
I’ll have to save them for the next round. Thanks Ab!

  3. Very interesting how you chose a selective list of questions.

I definitely agree about the missing socks, selective memory, tupperware, and changing lines. I’m pretty sure those are a universal mystery to all of us 😁

    1. Oh I assure you there’s no rhyme or reason to my questions. It’s my crazy brain?!?!?

Yes, yes, if I’m serious for a moment, I would admit to having deeper questions — the kind we all have about the meaning of life. Why certain things happened? Life, death? Happiness? Pain? But … the end of the day, the sock questions fascinate me. Why everyone can relate to something as silly as socks or computers running system updates? Maybe it’s me hoping that the answer is just around the corner. Who knows? 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎😎

  4. The Goofy vs. Pluto paradox is something I’ve pondered for years! Why does one get pants while the other walks on a leash? 😂 And the Tupperware lid math is completely real—pretty sure there’s a portal connecting lost laundry socks to stray plastic lids somewhere in the cosmos. Fantastic, hilarious post, Brian!

    1. Pluto definitely got the short end of the stick. Goofy’s got in good. Poor Pluto is always hungry. Poor guy! And Tupperware … I can’t figure that one out. My wife thinks I hate leftovers. The truth is that I can never find matching bowls and lids! Ugh! 😎😎😎

      1. Haha, poor Pluto really did get the raw end of the deal! 🐶 And I feel your pain on the Tupperware mystery—pretty sure there’s a portal inside every cabinet that eats matching lids just to keep us on our toes! 😂 Most importantly, earlier I didn’t used to like leftover food, but my Mum made me understand the evolution food took for thousands of years and the hardwork farmers put growing food must be respected…. but you gave me the right excuse to avoid leftover…. Now my partner won’t have words to counter me…. Thank you Brian… 😂😂…. Thank God I came back to blogging 😂😂

    1. If you like that line— then you get my writing. Ha ha, I’m very sarcastic, probably too much for my own good. And the sock thing … different cultures, different regions, but it’s a universal challenge. God, fate, karma, whatever you want to call it — someone, somewhere,is playing tricks on us all. 😎😎

      1. Ha, sarcasm like that is exactly why the post works so well 😂 And you’re right this has to be one of the few truly universal experiences, no matter where you’re from. Whoever’s behind it clearly has a very specific sense of humor.

      1. Yes, yes. I almost added them. I’m especially confused how two people can sit outside in the same spot and one person comes inside with ten bites and the other person none. This is my wife and myself. I’m the one with ten bites! I guess my skin/blood tastes better to mosquitoes. Now that’s a funny claim to fame: “mosquitoes like me!!”

      2. Last time I was in Seville they never bothered me … so I went away cocky, thinking I was safe … but they fasted this time and I had allergic reactions … not pretty. But I’ll definitely be better prepared next time. I’m getting itchy now, just thinking about them 🤣

  5. when you meet st. peter, i feel that you may be overwhelmed because you are such a fan boy, and not be able to remember any of your planned questions. ) i’m really hoping to know the answers to you unsolved mysteries because i’m such a true crime fan –

  6. I like to think when we get there we will magically know the answers. St. Peter will welcome us in and as soon as we cross the threshold…bam…we know the answers that have plagued us for years. Oh and this might be controversial but the big man is up there in green watching The Eagles ( I jest, so please don’t come after me…but am I?) and for a little vacay, he is over in Wildwood having a slice and a coke waiting in line to ride one of the roller coasters.

  7. You gave me a good laugh today. It’s definitely IN-N-Out. My husband has called the lost socks in the washer “Wayward lonely socks.” And yes, I’m excited to watch Sam Darnold and the Seahawks tonight!

      1. My husband introduced me to In-N-Out when we were newlyweds. I had moved from Seattle to Palm Springs. We drive 30 minutes for dinner or lunch to this day. It’s $11 for burgers and fries. At Jack in the box that same meal is $23. Plus In-n-Out is 100% better.

  8. Oh boy, that’s lot of questions but I suppose Heaven if for the eternity so plenty of time to elaborate the answers; that said thankfully they all can wait a long long time to be answered😉

    1. Oh, I’m so glad you liked it Lauren. Spiders, wasps, mosquitoes — what is it. Yes, I know we need them for the environment, but they have an angry side that I’d prefer to avoid. Ha, ha. These are just some of the crazy questions that run through my head every once in a while. Mystery of life. Ha, ha.

  9. “Okay Brian, You had me nodding and laughing all the way through. And for the record, I’m with you on wasps.

What I would like to know is why do I have to scroll farther and farther down to find my birth year on dropdown menus? That feels extremely personal to me.

Why can I remember my phone number from fourth grade, but not why I walked into the kitchen?

Why does something that I have been looking for show up in the first place I looked after I’ve already looked there three times?

And can someone please explain why I can nap like a champion in my recliner at 2pm but require a full committee meeting to fall asleep at bedtime?

Oh dear! I think I’m going to need more than one appointment slot all by myself.

    1. I used to like scrolling for my birth year. Made me feel like I was a contestant on the Price is Right. But the joke has definitely worn off. And yes, feels very personal. Like they’re trying to tell me something. “You’re old, you’re very old.” Ugh, go away mean website people. Ha, ha. And it is crazy. You ask me my home phone number from when I was a kid, it rolls off my tongue. There’s no second-guessing. It just comes out. I have to tell you my cellphone, the same number mind you that I’ve had for the past ten years, I pause and second guess. I know it but I’m always worried that I’ve transcribed a number wrong. We live in a crazy world.

  10. I know that studies have been done that show some people are frequently attacked by wasps far more than others. It can be related to scents, diet, sweat, and brighter colors. It is natural for us to swat at wasps when they are near us, but they become more aggresssive when we do that.

One of the worst father/son experiences I ever had was when my son and I were out working in the yard. I had given him his first lesson in using the electric hedge trimmers. He was trimming away while I worked in another part of the yard. Suddenly, I heard him screaming bloody murder. My first thought was that he had accidentally cut himself with the clippers. Instead, unbeknownst to me, there was a wasps’ nest inside the hedge, and dozens of yellowjackets attacked him, stinging him all over and getting inside his clothing. Not only was it very painful for him, but it was one of the most upsetting experiences for me.

    1. Oh my that had to be crazy. Not a fun experience. “Um, dad, next time you can do the hedge trimming.” Ha, ha. We get a lot of wasps for some reason and I’m always worried about doing that. So far, so good, but I’m waiting for the year when that happens. They’re just so aggressive. That’s what kills me. I prefer bumble bees where it’s I’ll stay away from you and you stay away from me. A nice peaceful coexistence!

  11. 😂 Honestly, I’ve wondered the same thing about wasps. They’re just angry little bastards flying around looking for trouble. Funny post though, Brian. Had me thinking about the meaning of life and hating wasps at the same time.

  12. This is awesome! Burgers, definitely BK’s Impossible Burger, but with McDonald’s fries. 🍟😀 Mac all the way! As for wasps, they’re evil. I have an underground nest that I need to wait until winter to get rid of it before I can use that part of my garden. Oh, by the way, my answers came from heaven, so they’re official. 😂

  13. There’s only one correct answer to the Great Burger Debate: Culver’s Butter Burger.

As far as enduring mysteries, I am dying to know who let the dogs out. Who, who, who, who, who?!

And also what happened to Amelia Earhart.

    1. Road trip. Google says the nearest Culver’s is in Csnton, Oh. Screw it. I’m getting into the car now. Might make it there in time for a late dinner!!! Gotta try it now Mark. Ha ha, okay maybe another time. But I love your questions. I’m dying to know those answers too. Every time one of those shows comes on tv — what happened to Amelia Earhart, I’m in. I put the remote down because I know I’m going to be entranced. Fascinated with that subject. 😎😎😎

  14. I laughed at the way you listed the Great Burger Debate, from the Big Mac to In‑N‑Out’s Double‑Double, as if the heavens were waiting for a verdict. Your image of the Supreme Being needing a vacation, wondering whether the divine prefers a beach or mountains, feels oddly relatable when you picture the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks as the ultimate weekend ritual. It’s refreshing to see someone tackle both cosmic and everyday mysteries with such humor. Keep feeding the curiosity; the world needs more people who can turn a simple question about wasps into a lively, thought‑provoking conversation!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Okay, okay, maybe the Supreme Being doesn’t have an opinion on the Double-Double Burger or an unimportant NFL game, but you can’t convince me that they didn’t have someone in mind when the wasp was created!!! Hear me out. Can’t you hear the Supreme Being saying: “You want to mess with the almighty . . . well, well, then let’s go. I’ll get back at you with the Wasp.” I’m kidding, but thank you for the kind comments. Life can present us any number of challenges. I’m convinced though that God, Fate, Karma, whatever you want to call it, most certainly has a sense of humor. Thanks for stopping by!
