Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance set aside to honor those who gave their lives in service. We owe these heroes our gratitude. The U.S. would be nowhere without these men and women. I plan to take a few minutes later today to pay my respects.
Memorial Day also has a more “casual, dare I say it, creamy” side to it too.
It’s widely considered in the U.S. to be the unofficial start of summer, marking the beginning of the summer vacation season and beach openings. And one of the ways we celebrate summer is with ice cream. Americans consume more than 5 million gallons of ice cream alone each Memorial Day Weekend.

I guess that’s kind of appropriate. Ice cream really is a lot like life. Here’s how. Or better phrased, here’s the scoop:
–It begins full and just about perfect, but slowly melts away whether you’re ready or not. You can rush through it or take your time, but it never stays the same for long. Along the way, it can get messy—drips happen, plans fall through, and you find yourself in sticky situations. But that doesn’t ruin the ice cream or life experience; it’s part of what makes it real.

–You have to savor it one lick, one day a time.
–Whether it’s 31 or 32 flavors, ala Baskins Robbins, life is full of choices. There are more flavors than you could ever try in one day.

And in the end, every day has its own flavor. Some flavors are bold, some are simple, some take you by surprise, but each one is worth tasting and experiencing. Cartoonist Charles Schulz knew what he was talking about when he said, “Life is like an ice-cream cone, you have to lick it one day at a time.”
Hope you get to enjoy today with a barbecue and maybe an ice cream cone or two to three or four. “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream.”
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor or brand?

Favorite is coffee gelato in Rome:)

What makes it great? That it’s gelato? Or that you’re enjoying it in Rome? When my wife likes to get me, she likes to reminisce about the trip she took with our son to Italy. She had coffee gelato looking out over Positano. Ahhhhhh, Heaven! Ha ha.

thanks for asking. Gelato is a big and tasty thing in Italy. To have in Rome, Venice or Florence makes it extra special. Thank you for your post.

Yes, gelato is one of the reasons my wife likes to bring it up. She loves it, says it’s way better than ice cream. Meanwhile, I just think she likes to bring it up to give me a hard time. Ha, ha.

Both reasons are valid:))

All good! Yes it is. It’s funny how some people are desert people. Some people are not. Some like sweets. Some like sour. Everyone generally likes ice cream though! 🍦🍦🍦😎😎

Love this metaphor, Brian! So good – and fun to celebrate the start of summer. I like pralines and cream — but I think my favorite is actually vanilla. Happy Memorial Day, my friend!

I’m generally a chocolate guy . . . but I love a fresh creamy vanilla too. When I was really young, we would make homemade vanilla ice cream. Mmmm, it was the absolute best. So fresh. So tasty.

Memorial Day is a powerful reminder of sacrifice and gratitude. Thank you to all who served and gave their lives.
And I like the way you tied life into something as simple as ice cream. It really does make you slow down and appreciate the moment.
As for me, I’d go with butter pecan, all the time….Can’t go wrong with the classics taste…

Happy Memorial Day, Brian!
I love how you looked at life itself like an ice cream. So true, especially it melting away whether we are ready or not. So best to savour each lick/day and don’t forget to enjoy the cone itself.
Here’s to a fun ice cream season ahead!

C’mon Ab, it’s just my crazy way of looking at things. Ha, ha. The way my brain works some times. Yes, here’s to ice cream. But in my mind, it’s always ice cream season. Ha, ha.

What a great metaphor, Brian, and a delicious one too! Love the quote also! My favorite is mint chocolate chip, and maybe I’ll buy some today! Enjoy your day while also remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I love pistachio ice cream. The place that had the best was Howard Johnsons. Of course those days are gone.

I remember that. HoJo’s had the best ice cream.

I’ll take a cone of peanut butter cup any day of the week (though I am trying to take it less often!) Happy Memorial Day!

My favorite flavor is chocolate chip mint also. I started my day today in the pool kicking laps. My first time in the pool for 2026. I guess that is the start of summer!

See you got in your laps! Now you can eat all the ice cream you want. Me? I’m cheating! Ugh,

I do feel better for getting in my laps. It was too hot to walk this morning, so I found something to do instead. But I don’t think we have any ice cream 😢 But we are going to BBQ tri trip.

My favorite flavor came as a total shock to me. Our local ice cream shop has banana once in a while, and it’s surprisingly good. I’m not normally a big banana fan, so this is quite the surprise.

I could see that. I’m not a big banana guy either … but with the right flavors I bet it’s out of the world. The problem with writing this particular blog is now I’m craving all these flavors. Ugh!

Of course, now you have me singing different summer songs. Right now it’s “summertime” by fresh Prince and Dj jazzy Jeff. Earlier it was soak up the sun by Sheryl crow. Ugh!!! Forget about trying to work now!!!!
