You scream, we all scream . . . for ice cream

Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance set aside to honor those who gave their lives in service. We owe these heroes our gratitude. The U.S. would be nowhere without these men and women. I plan to take a few minutes later today to pay my respects.

Memorial Day also has a more “casual, dare I say it, creamy” side to it too.

It’s widely considered in the U.S. to be the unofficial start of summer, marking the beginning of the summer vacation season and beach openings. And one of the ways we celebrate summer is with ice cream. Americans consume more than 5 million gallons of ice cream alone each Memorial Day Weekend.

I guess that’s kind of appropriate. Ice cream really is a lot like life. Here’s how. Or better phrased, here’s the scoop:

–It begins full and just about perfect, but slowly melts away whether you’re ready or not. You can rush through it or take your time, but it never stays the same for long. Along the way, it can get messy—drips happen, plans fall through, and you find yourself in sticky situations. But that doesn’t ruin the ice cream or life experience; it’s part of what makes it real.

–You have to savor it one lick, one day a time.

–Whether it’s 31 or 32 flavors, ala Baskins Robbins, life is full of choices. There are more flavors than you could ever try in one day.

And in the end, every day has its own flavor. Some flavors are bold, some are simple, some take you by surprise, but each one is worth tasting and experiencing. Cartoonist Charles Schulz knew what he was talking about when he said, “Life is like an ice-cream cone, you have to lick it one day at a time.”

Hope you get to enjoy today with a barbecue and maybe an ice cream cone or two to three or four. “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream.”

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor or brand?

    1. What makes it great? That it’s gelato? Or that you’re enjoying it in Rome? When my wife likes to get me, she likes to reminisce about the trip she took with our son to Italy. She had coffee gelato looking out over Positano. Ahhhhhh, Heaven! Ha ha.
