When I was in middle school, my friends and I were on the football team and raced from class at the other end of the hall to the locker room. We had to get into our football equipment and out onto the field. Our coaches wanted us on time. They didn’t want us to be goofing off in the locker room.
We weren’t allowed in the equipment supply closet. Jerseys and gear had a habit of growing legs and walking out of the closet. An equipment manager, an adult helper, had to get our equipment for us. He would bring it from behind a locked door to the front of the equipment room. Unfortunately, I ran into a bully.
He acted like he was everyone’s friend. However, he kept passing me up. It was like a scene from the Soup Nazi episode on Seinfeld without the laughs. The “Soup Nazi” says “No soup for you!” to customers who don’t follow his strict ordering procedures.
Instead of “no soup today for you,” I got “no equipment for you.”

A power trip
The first couple of days I thought it was just a bad joke. I would show up early and the guy would make me be the last person to get his equipment. I would ask for my equipment politely. Still, he insisted that I wait until he said “yes.”
I figured I must have done something wrong. A week into the bully treatment I tried once to go around him. I attempted to get help from his student helper. That just made him madder.
I’m not sure why he decided to pick on me or what his aim was. I think mainly it was his way of having power over someone weaker. I think he viewed the hazing as a form of toughening me up. Who knows? Each time I was late getting to the field the coaches grumbled about my tardiness. They stressed the importance of showing leadership and arriving on time. The bullying went on until the coaches started meeting in the locker room office. Of course, when they were around, he acted like a saint.
A scary thought
Looking back, I’m glad that was the extent of the bullying. An adult on a power trip. Young kids. Locker room. As an adult, my mind races with horrible images and thoughts of what could have happened. I could be writing about a whole different kind of story. I never heard any rumors or stories about the equipment manager, but it still makes me wonder. The signs were there. You don’t have to stretch your imagination far. I could have easily been a statistic.
Most of us have faced some type of bullying in our lives. Since that time, I’ve celebrated Cinderellas who rise above their bullies. I cheer them on. I know what it feels like. I’m especially drawn to movies that show how we shine when rise up above our bully.
Here’s some of my favorite Bully Getting What He Deserves Movies:
Finding Forrester (2000)
The author of a famous book played by Sean Connery, helps 16-year-old Jamal discover his writing prowess and stand up to his bully English teacher. “There’s one more issue here. Those words that I read today. I didn’t write them. Jamal Wallace did.”
Stand by Me (1986)
The boys get gang leader and bully Ace Merrill, portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland, to stand down.
Hidden Figures (2016)
Katherine Johnson fights her way into a key Pentagon meeting, where she’s asked to do the math to solve complex differential equations for John Glenn’s return to Earth. In doing so, she earns Glenn’s trust and respect and leaves her bullies in the dust.
Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004)
Hermione beats up Draco Malfoy. Yes. One of the best parts of the whole darned series. In the words of Ron Weasley, the legend himself, Herminone’s move was “Not good, brilliant.”
The Karate Kid (1984)
Bully Johnny Lawrence uses brute force and martial arts to torment the new kid, but Daniel LaRusso gets the ultimate revenge.

One of things that gives me anxiety about T moving into middle school next Fall is exactly what you wrote about: bullying. I wish that it wasn’t a necessary part of adolescence.
The Karate Kid example you shared is an excellent one. Have you seen the tv series Cobra Kai? If not, I highly recommend it. It picks up on Daniel and Johnny’s story 30 years later, with a focus on Johnny Lawrence’s perspective and a new generation of teens and their stories. It is so well done and the writing is nuanced – exploring trauma and the perspective of the childhood bullies. The characters, especially Johnny Lawrence, are so compelling. And played by the original cast from all 3 movies too!

I’m laughing at myself Ab . . . but I really liked the TV series. My interest tailed off at the end, but like you wrote, I thought they did a great job with the writing. It brought a new element to the story. Loved seeing it from Johnny’s perspective. And yes, hang in there with T. You never know what might happen. He might find “his people” and miss out on what you or I might have experienced. I saw that with our youngest son. I worried that he would run into some of that and he seemed to miss it completely. And if he did, he had such a good friend group, it gave him the strength he needed. My wish for T!

I hope for the same for T. 🙏
I loved Cobra Kai, especially the first 3 seasons. I started to lose interest in season 4 but stuck it through all 6 seasons.

I can’t believe an adult was the bully. Yes, it could have been much worse. They say most bullies are that because they were once bullied. But an adult…

Oh yea, it was a control thing. Sad, really.

Bullies push others around because they can. One needn’t look far. The well-dressed, well-paid folks who represent us, are paid over 100K year, and haven’t been to work in a month make excuses for their treatment of the folks who depend on SNAP and ACA assistance. The fellow with the key to the equipment is now probably a congressman from Louisiana.

It really does say a lot about a person. And you’re so right about our politicians. “We’re not the ones causing you pain. It’s those poor people or those damn illegals.” Ugh. It’s a shell game to them. Who can we blame? And yes, the guy wasn’t smart to try something like that, but sadly there are others who are. It’s why we need to call out bullies when we see them.

Wow. What a nasty adult who had no business being around kids. We had a bully music director in high school. My brother who is two years older than me was physically and mentally attacked by him. The director would physically push my brother into a wall and then ridicule him in front of the other students. When I got to high school, I immediately dropped band and took French instead. I had to get the band director to sign off on my changed schedule. I told him I wanted to take French. He said, “Well I want to go to the moon.” I said, “I will take French. I’d like to see you go to the moon!”

Oh that’s the kind of teacher who is the worst. Sending kids away instead of pulling them into an activity. It kind of worked the same way with me. I ended up not going for football the next year, instead going out for cross country. I wouldn’t say the equipment manager was the only reason, but it played a part. I just didn’t like an environment where hazing could go on. And I love that you got the last laugh!

Good for you to go out for Cross Country instead. It’s a healthier sport for you that you can still enjoy. The band director was looked at as a local hero in our small town, which used to drive me crazy. If you were a person who wasn’t picked on…

Karate Kid stands outfor me dealing with bullies. And I first heard via comments here about Cobra Kai. I did not know about this one. So looked it up and felt very excited after viewing a clip. It looks very good.I hope to get my hands on the DVDs. But only if season 6 is coming out on DVD too. But I see no mention of season 6 on DVD. Unless it’s coming out end of this year.

I learned to watch out for the guy. I wish I had reported him … but I’m not sure anything would have happened at the time. It was a small community and things were different. But I’m glad I came away careful of bullies.

such good examples, and who knows why a bully chooses someone, and you are so right, it’s all about control and them feeling ‘less than’ and insecure. those people should never be allowed to be in charge of any children

It really is them feeling less than. Love how you phrased that. I was lucky it wasn’t worse.

I have to watch myself…I avoid movies where there’s too much bullying of weaker characters…too visceral for me for the exact reason you offered in your assessment of the equipment room jerk – enjoying his power over someone weaker. Gah. Describes so much of what I’m angsty about these days – vulnerable people, individually and en masse, being bullied, disregarded, threatened. Sigh. 💔

You make a great point Vicki. When the bullying is too real for me, I go from being entertained to being scared in the moment. If you notice, most of the movies that I picked are so over-the-top that you know who is going to win out in the end. The dramatic ones where real people are vulnerable are what send me over the edge. Hang in there Vicki. Miss you, can’t wait to hear about next Thursday!

What weird bullying. I’m so glad that it stopped, Brian. The thought of bullies makes me just cringe! Such an awful way to support a power over worldview.
I don’t have a favorite movie but I’m really grateful that 7 out of 9 universities stood up to our bully in chief!

It’s a power move. Hate to see it. I’m with you on the colleges. I have deeper respect for the ones that stood up. Shows what they’re made of versus the ones that have capitulated like GOP Congressman have. Ugh.

These are all good bully-revenge choices, Brian. I hope the number of incidents of bullying have gone down a bit since our day, but for me if just one person is still being bullied, that’s one too many. I also steer away from bullying stories that are not over-the-top and instead grounded in the cruel reality of those scenarios.

Yea, it’s hard to watch examples that are cruel. Too close to home!!!

This was written so well with great movie examples. This paragraph gave me goosebumps, “Most of us have faced some type of bullying in our lives. Since that time, I’ve celebrated Cinderellas who rise above their bullies. I cheer them on. I know what it feels like. I’m especially drawn to movies that show how we shine when rise up above our bully.”

Thanks Rose. I worried about this one for some reason. I guess I was fearful of bringing up old wounds for others. I just tried to write my truth. Hate how bullies make us feel. Thanks so much!!!!!

I was the guy who always stood up to bullies. One time in high school, I defended a younger kid who was being bullied. A few days later, I got jumped by the group who were antagonizing him. They chased me, and I almost got away, but they eventually caught up to me and attacked with their fists. I ended up on the ground and they were legit kicking me in the head. If not for a Good Samaritan driving by who stopped to help, I could have ended up a statistic too.

That scene from Finding Forrester brought tears to my eyes. I remember that movie very well. Tough one, Brian, but I’d say one of my favorites is Four Brothers. The fight between Bobby Mercer and Victor Sweet is a classic example of what happens to bullies in almost all cases.

I had to laugh when I saw your Four Brothers reference. I love that movie. My wife always laughs at me!!! It’s over the top in so many ways but I love how they stick together and, yes, how they get back on the bully!!!!

An adult in a school! Awful! I got so frustrated for young Brian!
I always worry about that with my eldest daughter who is non-verbal. I would never know if an adult in her life is unkind and I have to have faith.
thanks for sharing
