And then the rains came!

It started raining. It was light at first. A drop here, another there.

Cats and dogs and everything in between!

Within a few minutes, it started coming down faster. A steady beat like a drummer tapping on a set of drums. It grew faster and faster. The noise growing with intensity and drive. The water washed down the window, replaced instantly by another bucket and another and another.

Around and around we go, where it stops, nobody knows!

And then the heavens opened up and I was reminded why you don’t mess around with bad weather. You give it a wide berth. The damn had been broken and I got a strange feeling that anything and all could happen.

My windshield wipers raced back and forth and barely seemed to register a difference. I half expected a tornado cluster to rise up out of nowhere and whip my car and everything around me up into a funnel cloud. “Hey ma, look over there, I see a flying cow!”

For a second, I thought I have to live out my very own version of the movie Twister. How did Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton make this look so easy?

Over before it began

And then just like that, it was over. Gone. The rain had stopped. The tension seemed eased. The storm raced back to wherever it came from. Within minutes, the threat was far from memory again. The birds started chirping again. Other drivers started coming out of hibernation.

Here’s to waiting it out.

And oh yea, here’s to sunny skies all this week.

  1. Love that song so much!

Don’t get me started about the rain. Pretty much all of our spring was all rain… I think it’s mostly over now, but I don’t want to jinx it.

The 48-hour building-in-a-weekend bunkie has taken 3 weeks plus counting. ☔

    1. Oh, can’t wait to see the completed bunkie! Only three weeks? I would somehow turn it into a yearlong project. 🤣🤣🤣 Hopefully better weather coming your way Claudette!!! And yes, love that song too. So many great memories hearing it with friends.

  2. Beautifully written, Brian. That’s the thing with these heavy downpours – it’s like nature’s own outburst! Power-packed one moment and gone all too quickly!

  3. Great song! We had a huge storm Sunday night with thunder, lightening that lit up the house and rain. It rained most of Monday, too. I read that we broke a century old record for rain.

      1. We have a monsoon season, but I haven’t figured out when it is. One year we drove to Flagstaff for our anniversary in July. We hit a hail storm near Sedona. Our entire car was dented by golf ball sized hail. There was zero visibility and the highway had a cliff on one side. Worst driving experience of my life! My husband drove a few feet behind a semi truck and all we could see were the taillights.

  4. those ‘outbursts’ are always so dramatic, here and then suddenly gone, and they always make me think for a moment, ‘did that just really happen? and then I go on about my day –

    1. Oh, now I need to know. Why not a Helen hunt fan? I wasn’t a big fan in twister or the movie with Jack Nicklaus… but I used to think she was okay in mad about you. Ha ha. I’m usually inpatient so stopping and pulling over was a big thing!!! Felt like I was a real adult! 🤣🤣🤣

  5. A similar thing happened here recently. Sudden rain, bracing for the worse yet to come… And suddenly it was done. Thank goodness. 😊

  6. The heavier it falls, the shorter the storm. Usually. We got so much of the stuff in May. I may like the rain but I was getting rather fed up! Nicely written, however.

  7. I like heavy rain, especially at night when I’m sleeping. It’s actually raining in the Quad Cities, and I hope it continues to rain some more this week and avoid a repeat of last year’s drought. Great song, by the way.

    1. I love heavy rain when I’m sleeping too. When I was a kid my parents had a tin roof porch and I loved the sound of the rain on the roof. I’ve had some close calls with rain over the years . . . I’m not quite the fan anymore. But I hear you about drought-like weather. Never want that.

  8. Glad you’re ok Brian. And so smart to wait it out – if you’re able to – rather than drive through it. Can be so scary and dangerous! A good metaphor for the unexpected downpours in life too!

    1. Yes, just kind of strange. I’m used to bad weather in Jan and Feb. And we get crazy storm in the summer. Kind of rare to get one in early June. Ha, ha. A big win for me too. I’m not the most patient. To sit it out and let it pass was big for inpatient me. Ha, ha.
