The circus barker steps out from the closed tent and in front of the crowd of townsfolk. In his best over the top barker voice, he yells out, “Step right up, step right up, step right up, ladies and gentlemen, be prepared to be thrilled and amazed, enlightened and astonished, we have a wild and wonderful array of attractions for you tonight. Oh yes, oh yes, we have thrilling rides and wild games, there’s something here for everyone! Come one, come all to the Greatest Show on Earth.”
I can still hear the barker in my head. A small mom and pop circus had come to my little town. To me, though, it looked huge. I couldn’t wait to see what was coming next. The extravaganza came back to me when I went to the grocery store and found my first bag of Barnum’s Animal Crackers in decades. Instead of a little box, they came in a plastic bag full of little zebras, elephants, lions, giraffes, and gorillas.

Nabisco began producing the treats in 1902, naming them after the famed showman P.T. Barnum, who exhibited the exotic animals in menageries that accompanied his circuses. The crackers’ colorful box, which looked like a circus car filled with animals, came with a string on top and was originally intended to serve as a Christmas ornament once the crackers inside were gobbled up.
Nabisco repackaged the crackers six years ago, removing the animals from their cages, picturing them instead roaming around in the grass. The company produces all of the animal crackers at their Fair Lawn, New Jersey, bakery and sells more than 40 million packages each year in the United States and to 17 countries worldwide.

When I was a kid, I gobbled the crackers up as fast as I could. I loved the sweet, but not super sweet snack. I wanted to run away with the circus or carnival, thinking that if I did than I could have them anytime I wanted.
When I opened the bag now, the crackers were a smaller than I remembered. The animals had strunk. Besides letting them out of their cages, I thought maybe Nabisco had put the animals on a fad diet of low carbs and Slimfast and a Back to Boot Camp killer exercise routine. Despite the changes, I was still able to pull the animals out of the bag two by two, just like the animals that boarded Noah’s Ark.
Of course, for the test that mattered the most, they tasted just like I remembered. And hey, a small 1 ounce bag was a mere 120 calories. I’m sure I wouldn’t want them every day, but they were still a treat.
(Of course, I tried a generic brand simple titled Animal Crackers and, yea, that bag tasted as bland as they looked. I did notice another bag that had icing on them. Oh, the power of a little creativity.) In any event, come one, come all, step right up and enjoy the circus. Who doesn’t love a parade of animal crackers!

Gee. I don’t remember ever seeing the original animal crackers in the PT Barnum box. I only remember a generic brand. And, of course, the animals are smaller now. Which is silly, really, they could have kept them the same size (unless you are just misremembering as you were a kid…) because everything is made smaller now!

I do remember them being slightly bigger but I guess everything is smaller now! Ha ha

This is so interesting. I’ve seen the documentary called The Food That Built America. These companies were doing battle for the top dog in the industry.

Yum! Sweet memories…and ya know what? I always thought it was shady to call those little morsels ‘crackers’. I mean…a cookie is a cookie is a cookie. (But hey, ma – I’m only eating crackers!) 😉😜😉

That’s funny! I agree with you. A cracker is a saltine that you put in soup. These were more like a cookie, but I guess animal cookie didn’t flow off the tongue the same way! Ha ha

I remember the animal crackers in the box. I think we got them from Santa in our stockings once a year. When I was in college, I was a huge fan of the pink and white iced animal crackers.

I need to extend my research and try the icing ones. I saw them when we went to the grocery store this weekend. I don’t know how they didn’t make it into the cart. A miracle! Ha ha

You know Brian, this brings back memories of the animal crackers we got in boxes when I was growing up. 🐒🐘🦒🦓 This is an image of the ones we used to buy way back when. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gZK8tXjzXFI/TjA5GQHvJDI/AAAAAAAAChc/GOn35fLPTRQ/s1600/IMG_9382.jpg
And honey, no, no, no to the generic bland, animal crackers! UGH! 😝 Love this throwback my friend! 🎪

Yes, exactly. The same kind. Loved those crackers. It takes me back to another time. Still very tasty!

Don’t you just love how such nostalgia brings out the kid in us all over again Brian? Imagine that…animal crackers! 😁☕😘

Animal Crackers are the best. Such good memories of enjoying them too. And I hear you on the shrinkage. Inflation is rough! But perhaps better for our waistline. 😆
I love the mom and pop circuses too. Definitely brings back good memories of childhood.

Animal crackers are a great memory from my youth. I now pass them by in the store each week, but with the arrival of this post I may have to indulge in some. A little nostalgia is “tasty” now and then!

Exactly Bruce. I wouldn’t say they were the same from my memory but it was a great trip back!

Oh, I love this tasty history lesson! Have you seen the movie “The Greatest Showman?”
I’ve purchased the huge plastic tub of animal crackers from Costco for my kids. Funny, they like the shapes more than the like the taste. But it’s great nostalgia!

Oh yes, more nostalgia than great taste, ha ha!

Hi Brian, what a fun memory this evokes from my childhood and from when my kids were little. I remember the little boxes of animal crackers. I still see them on the shelves in the store too, but I haven’t had them in decades. Maybe it’s time again. 🙂 I love the fact that they’re not too sweet, but just right for a treat. Thanks for the memories!

My wife and I tend to go grocery shopping shopping together . . . but when I go by myself, my wife usually laughs at my purchases. When I’m left to my own devices . . . anything can happen. One Friday night, it was the animal crackers, another night it was a big jug of Hawaiian Punch. I hadn’t drank the stuff in years, but I had not know if it still tasted the same. Loaded with lots of sugar, but did cut down on my coffee/soda addiction for the week. Ha, ha.
