Easy as pie

We’re days away from the new year: Are you a resolution-making person? Do you have your resolution for 2024? I’ve never been one to set a lot of resolutions, mainly because I’m not great about seeing them to fruition. Here today, gone tomorrow.

What I do like to do though is to think about the coming year as a beautiful, tasty pie and to think about how I want to carve up that pie in the coming year. It could be pumpkin, apple, or my favorite, coconut cream, the type doesn’t matter. What matters is how I’m going to carve up the pieces. Yes, a certain amount will be at work and for sleep.

With 365 days in a year and 24 hours in a day, there are 8,760 total hours in a year and when you work 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week, we average about 2,080 hours each year working. Yes, some people might work more, some might work less, but unless you’re a student or Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, or one of the other lucky few on Forbes list of the world’s billionaires, you’re probably spending a portion of your year working. Experts recommend that adults sleep between 7 and 9 hours a night. Adults who sleep less than 7 hours a night may have more health issues than those who sleep 7 or more hours a night.

So those two are two big pieces of the pie, but then here’s where things get fun. You have factor in time to eat, exercise, and spending time with your family. I would definitely recommend carving up some time to call home or text mom and dad. Hey this is a big one!

There’s millions of other things to include too like hobbies and responsibilities. Yes, we all have to make time for chores. As my mother used to say, the trash doesn’t take itself out to the curb. In the end, it comes down to a simple question: How do you want to carve up your time?

My one bit of advice, make sure to leave enough ice cream or whipped cream for that last piece of pie!

  1. Thanks Brian, and you’re welcome. It comes to you courtesy of a lifetime of give-ups, failed resolutions, and disappointment in my lack of ability to stick with my own good intentions. It makes me happy to drop those old negative thoughts about myself! A blessed New Year to you and your family!

  2. Great advice, Brian, especially the part about calling your mother and father!! 😏 I do make resolutions, as you will find out in a few days. You’ve got me thinking maybe I should add ‘eat more pie’ to my list! Here’s to 2024!!

  3. Umm…or do I mean yum? I stopped reading when I got to ‘coconut cream pie’. Did you write anything after that??? It’s my favorite and now I want THAT for breakfast. I don’t think that was the point of your post, was it??? 😜🥰😜

  4. Pie has been my “downfall” this Holiday, Brian. Then again, since the scale’s readings have gone up during this time perhaps it is best worded as “upfall.” Since each New Year’s Resolution I’ve ever made has been broken by the middle of January, my Resolution for this year is to not make any Resolutions.

    1. Oh, didn’t you hear Bruce, it’s a little known fact that pie doesn’t have any calories over important holidays. The calories just magically disappear. Don’t you feel better now? Ha, ha, of course, I did get my science degree from a Cracker Jack box. 🙂 🙂

  5. That’s a great way to look at it! I don’t usually do NYRs, but for 2024 I’ve resolved not to buy or borrow any more books until I read the ones I already have. I’ve many on my shelves and on my e-reader that I want to read “someday,” but keep buying more!

      1. I don’t mind that chore. I’m home fiddling on my laptop while my husband is working from home so I have plenty of time. But he feels it’s a “man’s job.”

  6. I love pie, but it doesn’t love me back, unfortunately. Gives me some serious heartburn. That said, how we divvy up our yearly pie is muy importante. I’m always looking for balance 🙂

  7. We have 1 extra day in 2024 for pie! 😊

I fall in the camp of 8-9 hours of sleep. Sure, it eats into the 24 hours but I get to more alert, present and healthier for the waking hours of the day.

Happy new year to you and your family, Brian!
