Ch- ch- changes!

When singer David Bowie released his song Changes as a single from his album Hunky Dory 17 in 1972, the single flopped commercially, failing to chart in the UK, and peaking at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Recognition for the single would not come until Bowie’s following album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

He would release it as the B-side of the UK reissue of “Space Oddity” and many now rank the song as one Bowie’s best. He played it frequently over the years and the song was the final song he performed in concert before he died.

I think of the song a lot when we talk about change, life is full of it, we have an option to face it or watch life pass us by. Here’s to facing change head on.

“If anything is certain, it is that change is certain. The world we are planning for today will not exist in this form tomorrow.” —Philip Crosby

“I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” —Michael Jordan

  1. I didn’t know that song was a flop initially. Huh, interesting. This is a great reflection on what we all seem not to like to do – but what brings about the next thing. Thank you, Brian!

  2. What an interesting story about Bowie’s song. It was initially a flop, but turned out to be one of his greats. The older I get, the more I dislike change, yet when something new or a change in the classroom occurs, I’m the champion on board. Churchill was brilliant and spot on. Earhart was passionate and focused.

  3. I didn’t know that about David Bowie’s song initially. I love much of his older stuff and have his greatest hits of CD. I’ll have to dig it out and play some of his classics tonight.

In terms of change, it’s often difficult but is usually for the best and if it’s not, then it’s still something to learn from.

  4. I’m not a fan of change, in fact I do everything I can to maintain the status quo, and relish in a cherished and dependable routine. But life does not cooperate with me, she shifts and turns at every opportunity, and leaves me singing in the shower, “The Way We Were.” I’ve accepted the reality that change happens and that’s the best I can do. Hugs, C
