When a heavy rainstorm rolled in late last week, leading to flash flooding and low visibility, my flight home from Florida was cancelled and I found myself spending the night in the airport. Some people might call it a waste of time, but I learned a lot from the experience.
The Late-Night Arena Tour
First, I watched a worker come through and string up bright yellow tape, meticulously cordoning off the center of the concourse. He and his partner were precise, making sure no weary traveler was able to stray into the zone. Next, they used a remote control to position a heavy-duty cherry picker. Setup out of the way, they went to work, one by one replacing the burnt-out lightbulbs near the top of the soaring ceiling.
People pay a small fortune to fill arenas for Cirque du Soleil, Stomp, or the Blue Man Group. These workers didn’t have flashy outfits—just standard construction garb, including one guy wearing a glowing neon vest. But judging by the crowd gathering around them, they could’ve charged a pricey admission.

A few lightbulbs. That was it. Yet you had men and women, young and old, and especially little kids watching with their eyes wide and mouths open. Who said Mickey Mouse is the only star in town? Here’s to being ten years old again.
At one point, I’m pretty sure I heard a collective ooh and ahh from the onlookers as the operator maneuvered the bucket, dipping it gracefully to miss a support beam before elevating to the other side. Everyone tried to act casual, but every single eyeball in the terminal was glued to the performance.
It turns out that was just the opening act. Later that night, okay, really late that night, I laid eyes on my new dream vehicle.
The $35,000 Speed Demon
When people talk about dream cars, they mention Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mustangs, and Corvettes. Yeah, yeah, they can eat my dust.
Sure, kids love the flashy sports cars. But my next ride is going to be a little tamer, though damn fine all the same! What it lacks in top speed, it more than makes up for in zero-turn maneuverability and pure, unadulterated swagger.
What kind of machine am I talking about?
An industrial, ride-on airport floor scrubber.

Another worker swept through the terminal piloting what looked to be a Kärcher B 110 R—a heavy-duty beast built for sweeping out massive warehouses and airport concourses. A quick web search revealed it tops out at a staggering 3.8 miles per hour. Go ahead, mock me. Four miles per hour is nothing, you say.
Well, a top-tier industrial ride-on like that runs anywhere from $26,000 to over $40,000 depending on the disc configuration and battery package. And boy, did this thing move. The driver was turning on a dime, leaving a gleaming trail of dry tile behind him. And yes, he stole the whole room — at least the few people still awake when he drove through my section of the concourse.
I haven’t broken the news to my wife yet, but when my SUV finally gives up and we start talking about a replacement, I know exactly what’s going in the driveway.
I’m going to be the envy of every person in the neighborhood. Who’s with me?

I love that you can find the wonder and amusement in the more annoying of situations – such as being stuck in the airport. I too would love to drive one of those airport cleaning Zamboni vehicles. Let us know how your pursuit of one goes. You’ll be the envy of the town!

I have to be honest. In the moment, I was not too happy. My original flight was cancelled. I kept selecting later flights and they were cancelled too. After I was finally settled and realized I couldn’t do anything to change things …. Only then did I start to make light of the moment. And my own craziness in a crazy situation. Ha ha, it’s good to laugh at ourselves, right?

I can imagine the frustration, especially being stuck overnight at an airport. But it does make for a great story now!

Oh I’m glad you saw the humor too!!!! It’s humor that keeps me going during moments of craziness and lack of control. Thank goodness for it.

Airports can be depressing dismal places. If you’re stuck, it’s better to find ways to entertain yourself. How is the wife going to feel when she realises that baby only has space for a solo rider? But I agree, it does look fun. Your driveway will be the envy of everyone

By the end, I was definitely ready to get on my way. But yes, I was able entertain myself by brainstorming blog ideas for a short while. As far as tile cleaner in the driveway, my wife wants no parts of it. She laughed at the idea. That tells me — I’m on my own on this one. Ha ha, I guess I can’t blame her. 😎

Small world: I worked for Kärcher for six years. I always dreamed or riding one of thos floor scrubbers myself. They seem like a ton of fun. Pricey? Well, sure…but think of all the money you’d save never having to buy mops again!

Oh that’s too funny Mark. I’m glad I was able to get a pic of it, otherwise I would’ve never found out the name. I’m sure the people next to me had to think I was crazy!!!! I’m glad I’m not the only one wanting to ride one. Don’t they look like a blast! 🏎️🏎️🏎️😎😎😎😎

Your reflections are so similar to my recent trip. I love watching people. I love the circus. I even worked as a vocal coach for Cirque for a week. We can learn so much just by watching others as they work their way through life.

Vocal coach — aww, that sounds interesting! You have to blog about that some time. Yes, people watching is a favorite way of wasting time for me when I have to wait. The stories I come up with in my head.🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️😎😎

I have done that. They needed me to work with a clown who had a strong Argentinian accent with a touch of French. He was to act as a plant in the audience with a Minnesota accent. It was a great gig. Got paid and two tix to the show.

It never fun to have a flight cancelled and be stuck in the airport, but it is interesting to see the airport after midnight. Last time we were stranded, numerous people had strung hammocks up, which I found both bizarre and brilliant… clearly not their first rodeo. Also, I’m with you–a minute ago, I had no idea ride-on airport floor scrubber existed, but now I think I need one. 😂

Hammocks. Damn, some people come prepared. I thought I had thought ahead because I had charged my phone and didn’t have to hang out by an outlet. Ha ha. And yes, the airport scrubber — that thing looked like it would be a cool ride! 🏎️🏎️😎😎🤭🤭

Oh, I’m buying it now!!!! If it can vacuum up snow too, it’s a done deal. It can be my midlife crisis. Instead of a corvette, I’ll buy a tile/pavement scrubber!!! 😎😎😎😎

So much happens at the airport after midnight! Love your positive spin .) I once had to arrive at the airport at 4 AM. Not too many of us there , only ones like me extremely early in the morning flight.
Most of TSA was still setting up so they set up a sort of improv security line that moved through the airport hotel attached. Lease security ever in our line bonded of course. Fun to see what was and wasn’t open at that time. Not many things open at all.

Oh, I wasn’t too happy at first. Ha ha, let’s say I was firing a few choice $&$@/? words at the airlines. My flights kept getting cancelled. I didn’t start to get a better attitude until I felt in a better place and stopped trying to control everything. You just gotta roll with it sometimes, right? Ha ha.

i’m all in with rolling with it, that’s my superpower – remember i’m the one who doesn’t mind standing in line and bonding with the others. (or in any other situation where we all have to deal with a challenge together)

Fun story – thanks for sharing! I was stuck in Oklahoma City from 3p to about midnight…the airport literally shut down at 8p leaving us all in a dimly lit, deserted corridor…then out of nowhere, a United workers tells us our plane was there and walks us all to the gate!

Airports really are mini cultures to themselves. Strange worlds with rules and regulations of their own. The thing that threw me was that every new flight that I had switched to kept getting cancelled too. I was supposed to leave at 5 pm Thursday but never left until 830 the next morning. In the grand scheme of things, I was pretty lucky.

This is one of those situations where the inconvenience almost becomes worth it for the story you get to bring home. Almost. Oh how the most ordinary things became interesting simply because you realized you couldn’t change things and had nowhere else you needed to be. Most days we would walk right past those workers without giving them a second glance. Take away the schedule, and suddenly maneuvering a cherry picker around a support beam can become riveting entertainment.
It makes me wonder how much genuinely interesting life happens in our peripheral vision while we are busy hurrying toward whatever we have decided is more important. Children haven’t quite learned to overlook the ordinary yet, which may explain why they can be thoroughly entertained by a cardboard box while we adults are checking whether it came with a return label.
There may be something to be said for occasionally having our plans interrupted long enough to notice the show that was already going on around us.
As for that $35,000 floor scrubber, Brian, I fully support the purchase. Just remember your neighbors are going to be terribly jealous when you come cruising down the street at 3.8 mph. 😂

4 mph! Zero radius turning. My wife isn’t buying my interest but I would trade the SUV for one in a heartbeat. Ha ha. Barely made any noise. Cleans up nice too. I swear I’m all in! Ha ha. 🏎️🏎️😎😎😎😎

There really is nothing quite like late-night airport entertainment when you’re stranded! 🧼✈️ The image of a whole crowd being mesmerized by a cherry picker lightbulb change is hilarious, and I fully endorse the Kärcher B 110 R as your next ride. Getting a sparkling clean driveway at 3.8 mph with maximum swagger sounds like the ultimate flex!

Once I settled down and realized that I had no control … then I was fine and able to chill. Waiting was probably great for the blog — lots of story ideas to work on over the next two months. And yes, the people watching was top notch. Did you know that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lopez moonlight as airport security guards? I swear I’m not making this up! They tried to fit in but I’m certain it was them. There’s no mistaking J Lo’s dance moves. I bet they’re researching parts for a new movie. Trust me!!! Ha ha. 🤭🤭🤭🤣🤣😎😎😎😎

Okay, maybe I was wrong about Brad Pitt and J Lo, but when I went back through TSA a second time early Friday morning, Mark Wahlberg patted me down. I’m sure it was him. I asked him about the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch Days. He just laughed and laughed. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The airport is one of the best places to people watch. You see it all—the good and the bad. On the other hand, that can get old really quick if you get stuck in an airport.

The cherry picker and the yellow tape as a late-night arena show — what a way to reframe a cancelled flight. You found the one thing in that concourse worth watching. We’ve logged our share of unplanned airport hours as a family, and the maintenance crews and baggage tugs out the window really have rescued more than one meltdown for us.
