I’m back!

For better or worse, I’m back. I had a busy two week break. Here’s what I learned (or was reminded) on my blogging vacation.

–Life goes on. Good or bad, it goes on. You can’t stop time.

–Life is simple. We make it complicated. Or is this just me?

–Your worth isn’t your output. You can pause without guilt.

–Actions and words matter. Honesty and Integrity matter. Truth matters.

–It’s wise to live with passion, compassion, kindness, humor, and love.

–George Elliot was right. “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” Each new day is a new opportunity.

–It’s not what happens to you. We all have highs and lows. What matters is how you react. Will you retaliate with anger? Or do you keep your honor and dignity in tact and overcome on the field of play?

–Keep smiling. It doesn’t change things, but it sure does make things more bearable.

–As much as I try for perfection, it really is for the birds. What’s more important is giving things your best shot. If you win, great. If you miss out, pick yourself up and try again. When you err, learn from your mistakes and move on. It’s better to enjoy the process. How many times have great athletes talked less about the miracle moment of hoisting the trophy — but instead about the day-to-day journey in reaching the mountaintop?

–Beauty is all around us. But first, let me keep it real. As I write this, it’s an absolute crummy day outside. It’s one of those ugly winter days that I hate. There’s muck and mud on the ground, left over from the salt trucks after a recent winter storm. There’s a drenching rain coming down. It’s just an ugly day. It would be depressing if I let it. But I close my eyes and look out again and I notice the raindrops dancing in the puddles. They’re like little goosebumps in the puddles, involuntarily contracting and pulsating. When I think of it like that, the day isn’t so crummy after all. It’s downright, beautiful.

–We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give to others. Give freely.

–Laugh. Laugh at yourself. Laugh with your friends. Just laugh. Laughter matters. Someone laughs at you, don’t sweat it. Laugh back. You’ll come out on top.

–Be you.

English author, mathematician, and Anglican deacon Lewis Carroll described the purpose of life this way. “One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others.”

Now that was a productive two weeks. I’d love to hear what have you learned so far this year?

  1. Yes, we all need these breaks, time to reflect on what life is all about. I love the little gems you’ve shared here. I’d add, life is for living, just soaking up each precious moment, and it’s for playing, interacting with the world in a way that brings pleasure to ourselves and others. And love. It’s all about love.

  2. We all need time outs. If not only to regenerate and recharge the brain cells, but to appreciate good things we already have. Good to have you back.

  3. Oh! “Raindrops dancing in the puddles. They’re like little goosebumps in the puddles. . . ” Brian, just delightful. I’m thinking along the same lines, reading John O’Leary’s “In Awe: Rediscover Your Childlike Wonder to Unleash Inspiration, Meaning, and Joy.” Looking forward to 2026!

  4. Whoa!! What a productive two weeks. I’m a little tempted to compare and think I didn’t come up with nearly as much depth in my time off. But I’ll just soak in your wisdom. Especially, “You can pause without guilt.”

    So good! Welcome back, Brian!

  5. Hello, friend! Love this reflection, especially this:
“We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give to others. Give freely.”
    So good! 💝😊💝

  6. A terrific post to get us all focused on the year ahead – and what we can make of it. All I have learned so far this year sadly is that our current political situation is just going to get worse and worse…last night a number of stars wore “BE GOOD” buttons to an awards show. Simple but powerful. We are currently being overwhelmed by hatred and divisiveness in the US and we have to stand up and resist evil and “BE GOOD.”

  7. I’ve learned that I will never, ever quality to be a Jeopardy contestant. For every question I get right, there are six or seven I miss.

Nice to see you back, turning puddles into silver linings!

  9. You have a very positive outlook and great advice. I read a short book by a swim coach friend of mine who coached a huge So Cal team and at USC. It’s called “Process of Hope” by Jeff Julian. It’s about his experience of surviving stage four lung cancer at age 39. Your quotes are very similar to his thoughts and process of getting through a difficult time holding on to hope.

  10. Brian, I think it is always nice to change things up from time to time. Life throws us enough change we can’t control, so sometimes it is nice to remind ourselves of the control we do have, and devote “extra” time to whatever scenarios make us happier humans.

  11. Welcome back, Brian. I hope you had a great break. I agree with you about “Life is simple. We make it complicated,” with one caveat. If we live and stay within the things we can control, then life is simple. When we go after things that are out of our control, life becomes complicated and difficult.

    1. Oh thanks Edward! I started to go down that path related to control and free will but stopped. I got to thinking about how we all need big, amazing goals. We may not always meet them, but if we take our best swing, that’s great. It’s when I try to control things that are out of my power, is when I run into problems. Great add.
