The Big Three: Special Delivery

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, May 11 – 17.

—Looking back. I like to look back on things that I’ve written in the past. Often I’ll grimace. How did I miss that comma or misspelling? Other times I’ll cringe in the way I described a feeling or the situation. But still other times, I’ll take a step back and say to myself: “Yes, I would like to make changes, but this is okay. I can live with this.”

Here’s to being grateful for the chance to look at our work in a new light.

As the world turns. We have bills. We have work obligations. We’re running a mile a minute. We forget to slow down and see how beautiful the world is around us. If you need a reminder of the beauty, check out this video. Three Ultra High Definition 4k cameras have been mounted on the International Space Station (ISS) and send back unique views of Earth from space. Oh, how precious! Thank you Mother Earth.

A large pizza with everything. I’ve learned from writing this post, that gratitude comes in many forms. It can be something big like celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. It can be a run-of-the-mill thing like running into a friend. It can also be something downright trivial like ordering out when you don’t want to cook.

Can you say Pizza Delivery! Hmm, perfect.

Doctors have confirmed what I’ve always known. Two researchers from South Korea’s Chung-Ang University and Yonsei University have found that long working hours — upward of 52 hours or more per week — may affect parts of the brain related to problem-solving and memory.

In particular, researchers found that people who worked 52 or more hours a week displayed significant changes in brain regions associated with executive function and emotional regulation, compared with study participants who worked standard hours.

The results highlighted the importance of addressing overwork as an occupational health concern and the need for workplace policies that mitigate excessive working hours.

Hmm, maybe I need to take a vacation day or two.

  1. I go back and wonder how did I miss that typo, too. Thankfully, it’s easily fixable. Focusing on our wellbeing matters. Many of us simply don’t get the sleep we need. Like the old adage goes —all work and no play makes for a dull day. Great post. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  2. Well, I love the calming effect of watching the world spin peacefully by…I love to travel and wouldn’t it be great if we all loved this planet we live on enough not to poison it? As for pizza, I don’t eat much of it, but now that I’m in New York that has changed!

    1. Yes, it really is calming. Funny how that works. And yes, we really don’t take good enough care of the planet. Our throwaway culture is a shame. And is going to kill us . . . sooner than we think. But still beautiful when we take the time to care for it.

  3. Love the ISS video. I have the ISS Detector app on my phone, so I can see when the ISS is close enough to look up into the night sky and catch a glimpse. It’s not visible too often, but it’s neat when the weather and the timing work out.

  4. I love watching NASA and space videos because it puts everything in our world into literal perspective. What we choose to worry about is literally so small when viewed from that far up. And Earth is so beautiful to look at. How luck are we to live on this planet.

  5. Oh….pizza will never NOT make me smile, that’s for sure. Yum. And I love this thought about self-talk, reminding us that good is good enough:
…”this is okay. I can live with this….”
Oof! So spot-on for me. Thank you, Brian! 🥰

  6. yes, when I see errors, I start to go into my old ‘cringe’mode automatically, but to learned over time to just let it go for the most part and move on, bigger things to spend my energy on. love that the earth and the moon and pizza are all the same shape and all good things and things that make us happy and that we cannot take for granted and have to appreciate.

  7. There is always that little sharp pain of “how did I miss that?” but hey, move on!

Little things are usually the things we are most gratful for.

    That is a cool stream!

  8. Oh Yeah! I see errors and “should haves” and “why did I’s” but it’s all part of the process and usually I let it go…. thanks for the ISS – so cool and soothing. It’s about time I read that something I do is good for the brain! NOT WORKING 52 HOURS a week! Thanks for sharing this post – although I am a cheese-only pizza gal! V

  9. Oh, I love how you changed perspectives on us with this – first in looking back and then in looking down. What a yummy post – like a pizza with everything on top!! ❤

  10. OMG, love the effect of the problem-solving part of the brain for working extended hours! So that’s what my problem was stemming from! 🤔🤔🤔 You should have told me that 30 years ago Brian! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

  11. Thank you for reminding me that being grateful for the small things matters. We all get so busy in daily routines that we forget to stop and just look back on what got us here now. Great post!

    1. I’ve been doing the Big Three Grateful posts each Saturday this year. It’s been an interesting experience. I always think I’m going to run out of things to write about or that they’re going to be boring, but the list seems to be endless. It’s been fun. And you’re so right, it’s all about the little things!! Thanks for reading.

  12. I have friends who keep gratitude journals. Seems like a good idea to focus on the good things instead of the things that went wrong. Unfortunately, my life is a soap opera and if I don’t write about the bad things, I’d have nothing to write about. I try to compensate by keeping a sense of humor about it and laughing at myself.

    1. A sense of humor is a must. My wife likes to tease me that I didn’t have a sense of humor and wasn’t writing . . . I’d be very similar to Oscar The Grouch. Ha, ha. Hang in there with the soap opera. Remember that we all like a good soap opera once in a while. But we also need a break too. Hang in there!!!
