The Evil Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs looks into the Magic Mirror and asks who’s the fairest of them all. When the mirror identifies her young stepdaughter Snow White as the fairest, the shocked and jealous Queen tries to have her killed.

I’ve never really liked the Evil Queen. I’m finding though as a I get older, I can relate to her situation. We have a few things in common. We’re both getting older. And, we both don’t always like what the mirror spits back.
I looked into the The Magic Mirror recently and asked which of my posts in 2024 were most popular and WordPress says these five generated the most views and hits:
- Things your parents never told you: My look at some of the things that my wife and I never told our kids.
- Nine lessons from my 9th Anniversary: Nine lessons that I’ve learned about writing a blog. It’s a blog, but can be digested into one sentence. “Write what your heart calls you to write.”
- Looking for my readers: My lame attempt to track down readers. Think Rupert Holmes’ song Escape (The Pina Colada song) and me putting out a personal ad for readers.
- Making up my own rules: My 7th grade English teacher would be rolling in her grave, seeing me flaunting basic English grammar 101. Sorry Mrs. Haughwout!
- My Towering Inferno: I wrote about the my Tower of Babel, the tower of books on my desk, and how it will fall over any day now.
Unfortunately, I don’t believe what the Magic Mirror (i.e., WordPress) told me.
Oh, I know trying to predict hit counts and visitors is a dangerous game. You rarely can really figure out what’s really going on, but I’m of the mind that some of my other posts are better. I don’t consider any of these five as my best writing. I would choose others.

It’s hard to pick one, but these five would certainly be in my consideration:
- A death hits close to home: My story on how I earned my first front page story byline. On one hand I was ecstatic. On the other hand, I couldn’t get out of my head that the story was on a researcher who was walking back from the library and was struck and killed by a car. Here one minute, gone the next.
- A tribute to strong women: I tell the story of being a clueless kid, but still being in awe of my mother in managing to keep our family going during a moment of extreme stress and panic.
- Shh, a few opinions that will get me in trouble: I try to be radically honest. I still think ice cream should be served with every meal and it should be outlawed to be a Dallas Cowboys fan.
- A lesson from the heart: How my mother pulled me from a moment of sheer panic and made me see that anything is possible.
- 100 Things I Love: Let’s try this again: My second take on the things I love about life. Who doesn’t love The Berenstain Bears Children’s Books; the 1970s made-for-TV movie, Brian’s Song, about the friendship between Chicago football players Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo; WordPress Bloggers; A Simple Man by the band Lynyrd Skynyrd; and the wisdom of A.A. Milne and Winnie the Pooh.
I’m not sure I believe WordPress. But, I’m still interested in what people have to say. The feedback helps generate creativity and reminds me to keep it real. I think Robert Frost had the right idea: “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”

Love this…I will pop in and like Beth, look forward to seeing the results. I think everything you write is fab…and case in point, this phrase: …”we both don’t always like what the mirror spits back…” Amen. Nasty mirrors with bad manners. 🤣

Oh, you’re too kind. That damn mirror. Maybe we’ve been viewing the Evil Queen in the wrong light. Maybe she was really a good queen, but she was living with that damn mirror telling her lies that it turned her into an evil queen. Hmm, the things you think about on your last week day before you have to go back to work. Ha, ha. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

LOL! You might be right! Torment as the work week looms…yes! But hey…do I spy a new headshot/pic? You’re looking spiffy! Who needs the mirror? 🥰

Yea, I had to do a mini update to my site. I was looking at some of the other themes and instead of previewing one, I activated it. I quickly went in and corrected it. Since I was making changes, I updated my avatar photo! All because of clicking too fast!!!! Ha ha.

You’re brave! 🥰 I’m afraid to update anything!

Most times, I update because I have to, meaning I mess something up and am forced to clean this up. Ha, ha

I made a couple of “sidebar edits” to my site today and held my breath while I did so. Seriously! 😜

I’m with you on the stats, Brian. We should never let our muse be driven by them! And I love the five posts you picked out – especially the strong women and 100 favorites!
When I the poll, I was the 5th vote – and I noticed the answers I picked were unanimous so far. Wow!

I played with the poll widget. Pretty simple to use for a non-techie like myself. Ha, ha.

Done. I’d have liked to select more than one response for the second question

Your second response: “Brian pays me to read his blog . . . but I’m holding out for more money!” C’mon, you can admit it! That’s the response you really wanted to check. Ha, ha, I’m kidding. Thank you for reading.

Ha, I’m with you on the Dallas Cowboys fans point. And I did take your poll. Not surprised by the results thus far, but then again, my thinking was reinforced by those results!

This is such great idea and very exciting…This was not an easy selection, but I have completed it.

It’s always interesting to see what resonates or doesn’t resonate with readers.
I completed your poll and so far have aligned with the majority opinion. Will be curious to see the final results!

I’m obsessed with WP stats! Sometimes I question them too – one of my most popular search terms is “Piper Perabo’s feet” (WTF?) – but the evidence does back them up. And I did post a pic of her wearing high heels once, a long time ago.
I’m going to have to click on a couple of these links I haven’t read yet!

Yes, WP stats are interesting in what they reveal or don’t reveal. I try to look, but not freak out every so often. Ha, ha.

Thank you Jennnie. It was fun to go back and look at everything I posted last year. Some ones I like and some that make me roll my eyes. Ha, ha.

I remembered those five posts of yours. They were excellent. I looked at my top post from 2024 and it was from 2018 about tears in youth sports. The annual stats who it had three likes. Three? That’s my number one post of the year?

Oh that can’t be right! That makes no sense! So frustrating.

I know! I was going to do a year end review of my top posts. After I saw that I said, “Never mind!”

Your personal faves sound better than the WP ones. I like that two involve your mother. That’s awesome.
I can’t remember why or how I came upon your blog, so I voted for the last option about being tied up, etc, as a joke, only to find that someone else chose that one too! Ha! 🙂

YOu jokesters. Ha, ha. $20 says the other person who selected that was one of my family members. Ha, ha.

Haha! Probably. 😛 I mean, if you’re going to list it as an option, someone’s gotta take it. 🙂

That’s why I didn’t create an open ended one …. They would’ve had some fun with that!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The one you supplied was pretty good, though. 🙂

OH the tally of readers….. I often feel like giving up, and then I get a post that receives a lot of hits, and I keep going. I just can’t stop myself anyway – I will look at my WP mirror today – EEEK! Great Post, love your humor! V

I try to look at hits and numbers with one eye covered. Ha, ha. I can’t help myself, but it also doesn’t always feel right. For that reason, I try to not read too much into any of it. Ha. ha. Good luck.
