My wife has become fascinated with a little bird friend that keeps visiting our backyard. The bird comes every morning and evening, perching itself on the far edge of the deck. The little guy peaks into our kitchen window and sings my wife a song. We’re by no means bird people, but my wife thinks it’s a wren.
Wrens are small, active birds, brown in color, that perch with their tails straight up in the air. They forage in thick brush and marshes on insects and spiders. The Carolina Wren and the House Wren are common in our area and they make a variety of chatters, rattles, and scolds, often in response to large animals that might be predators.

When my wife and I bought our house years ago, we liked that it backed up to a township building and a small woods, but we were starting a family and had bigger needs. The woods were a plus, but the third bedroom, where we created a nursery, was our bigger concern.
Okay, let me restate that, our biggest concern was survival and just getting through those first days of bringing our baby home from the hospital. I’m still surprised they let us leave the hospital. They had to be crazy.
Anyway, our house has served us well over the years, but, as we’ve aged, I’ve found that the woods and quiet have taken on greater importance. It wasn’t quiet like this, but one summer I said to my wife, “Hey look honey, did you know we have a backyard. It’s actually pretty nice.” Oh sure, I knew it because I had to mow the “damn hill” that takes up much of the yard, but it was still a revelation when I noticed the peace and calm.
I’m grateful that we have a place that’s green and helps us close off the rest of the world. I’m even grateful for our little wren friend and the squirrels and rabbits and the occasional deer who eat my plants.
Hello my little friends.

Oh, it’s just me not wanting to work and instead taking in the peace in the backyard. Wish I could stay there all the time. At least until the heat and humidity later in the summer send me inside. Ha. ha.

It looks so wonderful to have the quiet green space right in your backyard and the nature that it attracts. How peaceful, comforting and relaxing! I can also see why you enjoy working from there too on a nice day. 🙏💕

It can get pretty hot and humid here in the summer, but in the spring/early summer there’s lots to enjoy and take in! Even little Wrens. Ha, ha.

Slowing down to enjoy what’s right in front of you…err…in back of you! Love it! And thanks for the Tuesday-that-feels-like-a-Monday smile with this: “Okay, let me restate that, our biggest concern was survival and just getting through those first days of bringing our baby home from the hospital.” 🥰😜🥰

I may have went a little overdramatic there, but when our daughter came home she was a bit jaundiced — I’ve since learned that that’s pretty common — but to me that was life or death and I remember thinking “oh my god, what have we gotten ourselves into.” Ha, ha. Of course, we fell into a groove, but survival was definitely on my mind. My poor kids and my poor wife. Ha, ha. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Oh so relatable!!! We had a similar experience with jaundice — scary! 🥰

Brian, there are certain things that may see insignificant to others that brings me pure joy. Our backyard critters are one of them and I don’t have to buy a ticket to be entertained. By the way we are in Carolina Wren territory. They are comical to watch and a delight to listen to. 🐦🐤🦆

This little guy is small but he’s got a powerful voice. And you’re so right about things that may be little to others, but bring me joy. I think that’s the key to life: to find those things. Otherwise, life will drive you crazy. Ha, ha. 🙂 🙂

Your backyard looks beautiful and peaceful. I love our creatures and birds, although it’s not green like our Palm Springs home, it’s still nature.

When I was working in the yard Saturday, I did think about the pics of your yard that you’ve shared and another friend of mine who lives in Scottsdale. Yes, a bit browner . . . Ha, ha. But then you don’t have to live with the bareness come winter. Yes, it’s been interesting so far this year, seems to be a lot more critters than past years. Of course, I could just be noticing them more now. 🙂 🙂

That’s true about winter. This spring has been beautiful because of all the rain we had during the winter months. Everything is in bloom!

A bit of green with trees and shrubs for the birds is a treasure. The world would be so sterile without some greenery.

Definitely green this time of year. Lots of colors in the fall and back to black and white in the winter. Ha, ha.

I couldn’t agree more, the spaces we utilized to raise our kids have become a haven of peace and quiet. I walk through the house every morning and I’m filled with gratitude for this space and the memories. Beautiful post Brian. Hugs, C

It’s funny how those places used to be bustling and now they’re the quietest places in the house. I sometimes take my laptop into my son’s room to work when he’s off at college. I definitely get a different vibe then when I stay in my office! Crazy! 😜

I love the fact the world has slowed down enough that Mrs. Chess and I can enjoy our surroundings, which includes an appreciation for wildlife which arrive on occasion, whether they fly, hop, or walk to our little corner of the world. And to be sure, there is a newfound appreciation for when all we hear is the birds singing their songs.🐦

What a lovely post, Brian. Your backyard is gorgeous and so peaceful looking. And it’s fun to watch the birds. We love to sit on our patio and watch the hummingbirds. And my daughter and SIL who live in TN, love watching the various types of birds come to their feeder. All part of nature’s gifts, right? I wish our grass looked as green and lush as yours, but the gophers are back. So we have to look into some kind of treatment because they have wreaked havoc. Thanks for sharing your beautiful yard. 🦜

The green grass has nothing to do with me. My yard is a mess right now. Fortunately it’s just that time of year! And yes it’s nice to have a calming retreat!!!!!
