Going back on my promise

I’m breaking my word. I promised myself that I would post just three days a week this year. Here I am barely three weeks into the new year and I’m posting an extra day this week.

It gets better. I’ve long made it a goal to stick with writing about the human condition, the situations we get ourselves into, and the lighter side of life, but I’ve been getting sucked into the news. It doesn’t bode well for what is likely to be a crazy year with the 2024 presidential election.

I generally try steer clear of politics in my writing, because, as I’ve explained on my blog in the past, it’s a losing game. You’re going to upset half of your readers right from the start and goodness knows I need all the readers I can get. It’s a no-win situation.

I’m breaking both rules this week. Here goes:

—I hate our current political party system in the U.S. for putting us in this situation. I want better choices than what we have. I’m ambivalent on President Biden. I feel like he’s done some good, in fact a lot of good, but I still feel there’s a general malaise that needs to be overcome. Saying all that, I abhor GOP front runner, former President Trump. I’ll never be able to vote for him. Call me a Rhino. Call me weak. Call me whatever you want. I always feel like we’re one false step away from leaving the keys to the corvette with the rich kid everyone appeases because he’s got money, but nobody can stand.

I’m really not sure what he believes in. His policies always seem to separate us, instead of uniting us as a country. The next day he goes without lying or fibbing or stretching the truth will be his first. I suspect in his mind, he doesn’t view it as a lying, but he lies about things that are oftentimes easily to be tracked down. I can never get over that fact. My mom and dad brought me up to believe a lie is a lie.

I’m tired of his big lie too. You lost the election, the Supreme Court rejected his countless 2020 election challenges, because they didn’t think a case existed, live with it.

It gets better. I hate bullies. He claims that he should have immunity from the Democrat’s “trumped up” charges, but then I listen to him talk and the first thing he talks about is taking on a dictator role and charging President Biden. Am I the only one who doesn’t get this logic?

He loses me too every time he tries to act coy, mocking a reporter with a disability in the first campaign and then claiming to simply be retaliating against someone who was rattled and exasperated. You want to go after the reporter’s coverage fine, don’t try to make us doubt what we all saw with our own eyes, Trump making fun of the man’s disability. And most recently, trying to be coy once again, but still letting his white base in on his joke, by referring to Nicki Haley by her birth name Nimarata. Yes, Donald, we know that she’s the daughter of Indian immigrants and was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa. By bringing up her Indian background, when it’s not even relevant, you do nothing but make yourself look small. And, well, a racist bigot too.

I’m a fiscal conservative and social liberal, meaning I think we would be smart about how we spend, but I don’t think the government should have a role in certain things. What does this all mean? It mean’s I’m a man without a party and I want better choices.

–When did we start to demonize people who believe different things from us. For example, when I grew up, the guy next door could’ve been a Republican or a Democrat or Libertarian for that matter. I’m pretty sure my parents didn’t know and certainly didn’t care. Country and family came first.

Now when I see regular folk talk about the other side, they talk about it with an extreme anger and vengeance. There’s real hatred. Yes, some of the issues we’re facing — the second amendment and the “right of the people to keep and bear arms” and the abortion issue — have far-reaching effects, but when we put these issues over the needs of people standing right in front of us, we’ve lost our soul. We’ve lost what makes us human.

–Last week when I got in the car, my phone was dead and I had to listen to the radio. The news came off rapid fire and it was all rather upsetting. Continued bloodshed in Gaza; Ukraine’s battle against Russia, natural disasters, the list went on and on.

I was still thinking about this when I heard someone in an aisle of the hardware store complaining about the US involvement in aid and attempts to help other countries. Now, I’m as fiscally conservative and patriotic as they come, but does death and dying across the world not get your heart beating?

If not, then I fear something is wrong with you. We can’t police and safe the world, but if we’re as religious as many folks like to think we are, then we should be trying to help. I left the store fuming and did the only happy thing I could think of: I texted my kids and wished them a happy weekend. Yes, I broke my word and maybe I upset a few people, but just like my writing, I need to be authentic and open.

In short, I need to be me. Let’s hope the next year shapes up becomes more optimistic and we can come together for the best of us all. Yes, let’s hope.

  1. I don’t vote and I went against my own beliefs last election because everyone said “not voting is a vote for Donald Trump,” and I wasn’t sure which I thought was worse. However, I do believe that elections are unfair. I think our country is not run “by the people”. It’s run by few people and they’re corrupt, or corrupt bumbling idiots.

    1. I still believe in voting. I guess I’m one of the view who still believe in the purity and civic responsibility of it. But I understand why you feel the way you do. Corrupt and bumbling idiots. Love how you phrased that. I keep hoping for better change. Let’s hope it comes soon.

      1. I guess I’m not alone, considering less than half the voter eligible population normally votes in elections.😔 Yes, corrupt and bumbling. I watched a bit of one of the late night talk shows, I think it was Stephen Colbert showing bits of the Hunter Biden deposition, and one Representative tells another that she’s a porn expert. It’s insane.😱 For people like me, who barely watch the news or pay attention to politics, I don’t see good things. When I do tune in, that’s what I see. Or the sex tape made in the meeting room. Or the guy who supposedly did cocaine publicly and invited someone to an orgy. These are the people running the country…

  2. I’m with you on Biden and Trump, and also abhor the current two-party political system. 🤢 If you haven’t already, you might look into Kennedy. I’ve been following him closely since he announced his candidacy and have been volunteering to collect votes to get him on the ballot. I don’t 100% agree with his policies, but I personally think he’s the best option available and that he sincerely wants to help citizens of this country. I know traditionally third party candidates don’t stand a chance, but he’s actually polling very strongly amongst young people, so who know? 🤷 (I’m not trying to push anything–it’s just something to research if you’re not happy with the other options.)

    1. I have to do more work in understanding Kennedy. His anti vaccine positions have been a no no with me, but I think there are other issues where he makes sense. I just hate that we have to get our choices from the bottom of the bucket. Most folks even the staunchest Republicans and Democrats would not pick these two, but that’s what we’re left with. Ugh.

      1. Yep, you are absolutely right. It does feel like we’re scraping the bottom of the bucket. The people that would be most qualified don’t want the job, unfortunately.

I totally understand your position on vaccines. For me, that’s something I can let slide because my top issue is affordability of life, and he’s the only candidate planning to reduce military spending, prohibit corporate bailouts, and funnel those savings onto the American citizens.

Dr. Zeus has (for 10+ years!) talked about creating an AI president that clearly states it’s positions and must be held accountable to the platform on which it runs. It seems a bit dystopian, yet every election cycle I find myself wishing that was an option. LOL!

  3. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, Brian. I can only say, while I don’t love my Prime Minister, I am awfully glad I am Canadian. The crap you guys have to deal with is ridiculous. You definitely need another party (or two) with decent candidates under the age of 70.
I love this: “I always feel like we’re one false step away from leaving the keys to the corvette with the rich kid everyone appeases because he’s got money, but nobody can stand.” It is so true.

  4. With you all the way. Thank you for breaking with your intended blogging schedule to bring us a super-duper heartfelt post which resonates — big time. All of the frustration I feel — it’s hard to put into words but you did it well by citing the on-going bigotry and insanity of an idiotic bully.

  5. My feeling on this is that we should not be limited to two candidates. Unfortunately it comes down to who has the most financial support. I also believe there should be a code of conduct for the president and his entire staff. If there were though, there probably would be zero candidates.

  6. I admire your courage in writing this piece. I agree with your opinions. I don’t think any candidate, including Biden, is a perfect choice. I am somewhat concerned that a third party candidate might give Trump the edge, by splitting the vote. I can’t imagine the damage another Trump presidency would do to our country. I am afraid our democracy is at stake. I pray it will survive.

  7. Well said, Brian. I dread another Biden/Trump ticket. I guess it’s true … Those that are smart enough to be President, aren’t dumb enough to run.🤣 I don’t understand the Trump support???

    1. My own kindergarten theory is that he feeds on many folk’s feeling of being left behind and left powerless. I get that these people are looking for solutions, but Trump or the cult of trump has never shown to me that he truly cares about those people or their issues. He cares about them because they’re his ticket to the White House, but I don’t see a lot of policy changes by him to really improve people’s lives. It’s policy changes of hate (pitting one group against each other) not improvement. Just my 2 cents.

  8. Brian my friend, what a fabulous post and there is nothing more that I can add to your soapbox! I love it and you speak the truth so passionately. So what are you running for? 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️🤹🏼‍♀️ You got my vote! 👍🏼 I think more people agree with your stance than you think. Thanks my friend!

    1. I’m battling a cold right now and your comment put me into a coughing fit! Me running for office? Oh my, we can do so much better!!! Trust me!!! I don’t mind if people disagree with ne, I just hope we can get past this current phase of politics of hate. Feels so wrong to me!!! Kym for President, now that’s a move I could get behind!!!!!!

      1. Oh no about the Kym for President bit. They may not like my candidness. But on the other hand… 🖐🏼👍🏼✋🏼 Yet,, I am so exhausted with this state of division and bitterness and hatred and violence going on right now. 😝 It is wrong and I feel the same way. When will people come to their senses? We are stronger together and weaker divided! 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Hellooooooo people!!!

  9. We need more common ground, Brian. Sadly, I fear it’s going to be an even uglier elections if Trump wins the primary, and a nightmare if he wins again. He’s a bully and he encourages and riles up his fan base to act as such.

There needs to be better choices for sure. 🙏

  10. Oh wow, you said it so well, Brian. I love your description, “we’re one false step away from leaving the keys to the corvette with the rich kid everyone appeases because he’s got money, but nobody can stand.” Oh my goodness, yes! I don’t know how the bully continues to win. That’s not the way we write the story!

    1. If this were a movie, it would be panned for lack of realism. Nobody else gets this many chances. I keep out hope though …. There comes a point in every story when we finally tire of the bully. It has to be coming soon.
