77 and still bringing a different way of thinking

When I was a little kid and heard singer Dolly Parton on the radio, I wasn’t sure what to make of her. When we drove anywhere, my parents usually had the radio on the local country station and it would be frequently playing one of her songs.

I wasn’t a big fan of the steel guitars and twangy sound that make up country, but in the years since, I’ve come to appreciate her songwriting skills and her approach to life. She’s everywhere right now, showing up one week to sing Rocky Top at the University of Tennessee to dressing up as a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader and singing at the half-time show of their Thanksgiving Day game against the Washington Commanders.

However, Parton, 77, is still going strong and brings a different way of thinking. Here’s what I mean (and I’m not talking about her looks or her age):

—When there wasn’t much progress on a covid vaccine, she stepped up. It was all over the news how she donated more than $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to help it work with drug maker Moderna to develop one of the first coronavirus vaccines to be to be authorized in the United States.

—And then recently I saw her response to several recent Tennessee laws that discriminate against Trans people, prohibiting gender-affirming care and restricting drag in public. Parton told media outlets, “I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it. I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees.”

“I’ve got transgender people. I’ve got gays. I’ve got lesbians. I’ve got drunks. I’ve got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.”

Parton and I may not be on the same page on musical tastes, but I have to say, I love her approach to life. The older I get, the more convinced I become, that it’s best to leave the judging to God.

Here’s ten more Dollyisms, full of down-home, folksy wisdom and “Christian love your neighbor like you would like to be loved” sageness, that make a lot of sense to me:

“I make a point to appreciate all the little things in my life. I go out and smell the air after a good, hard rain. These small actions help remind me that there are so many great, glorious pieces of good in the world.” —Dolly Parton

“I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know that I’m not dumb. I also know that I’m not a blonde.” —Dolly Parton

“The magic is inside you, there ain’t no crystal ball.” —Dolly Parton

“Storms make trees take deeper roots.”—Dolly Parton

“I’m very real where it counts, and that’s inside.” —Dolly Parton

  1. I adore Dolly and her quotes are spectacular…none more so than her beloved “all within my own family” quip. Here, here! Thanks for sharing so many of her gems in one place, Brian! 🥰

    1. I originally included that quote in yesterday’s blog and then I was like, oh, I need to build that out into a story all it’s own. She’s led such an interesting life. Love how she lives her values. Can laugh at herself. And is fearless in her creativity.

      1. The classic Wizard of Oz quote comes to mind: “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!” Ha, ha! To steal another line, “I’m not sure you want to see how the sausage is made.” Pretty scary stuff in my brain. Got to feed the beast. Got to feed the beast. Need another post. Ha, ha.

    1. I grew up hating country. It was hard to avoid it in my little rural town that I grew up. Funny thing is that I like it now. I like the story-telling. I’m still partial to 80s music, the time when I listened to most music, but definitely like country more now.

  2. I’ve read that Dolly is taking a lot of flack from some of her peers for not acting her age. How silly to judge someone by their age. If I had a body like that and could still walk across a stage, I’d do it too.

    1. Yes, I’ve heard that too and I don’t get it. I hope the criticism is just people looking to get a reaction. I think the great thing about her is that she acts the way she wants, but doesn’t point a finger and say you need to be like me. Seems healthy to me.

    1. I’ve come to like country. I absolutely hated it as a kid. It’s definitely been a strange ride. I love how she’s willing to laugh at herself, use her money to make a difference, and her simple folksy wisdom. She lives her values better than a lot of other supposed religious people. And to be 77 and still making a difference . . . wow.

  3. Honey, I love me some Dolly. 🥰 I watch her specials for the holidays, and she gets me crying every time! 😭😭😭 She is a doer, not just a sayer. She is a true humanitarian in my eyes. I love the movies she is in, and it seems like her character always has a way of bringing an ethical point and life lesson to her role. Thanks so much for sharing this tribute to Dolly. 🙏🏽 And because of her attitude, I’ve fallen in love with her music. She tugs at the heartstrings! 😍💖😘

  4. So good. I admit that I haven’t listened to a lot of Dolly’s music but I do love her attitude and wisdom. The dumb blonde one totally cracked me up.

And I loved your line, “The older I get, the more convinced I become, that it’s best to leave the judging to God.” Yep! Beautiful! ❤ ❤ ❤

  5. Dolly is an inspiration and I love that her recent album scored her first #1 album on Billboard. Her first! At age 77!

I recently downloaded her version of I Will Always Love You, which Whitney Houston famously covered for The Bodyguard. It’s beautiful.

    1. Love your piece Dale. Love the background on her career. I think you nailed it to on why she’s so loved. She never tried to be anything other than herself! Yes, I was brought up with country too and hated Dolly’s music before I liked it, if that makes any sense. Ha ha!

      1. Thank you for taking the time to read it (it was rather long!) And yes it does make sense. I have changed my mind about quite a few singers over the years 🙂

  6. Brian, just today I learned that Duncan Hines has a whole slew of Dolly Parton baking products. She’s never been more in demand, and she’s clearly “the real deal.” She’s one of a kind, and we’re all the better for it.

  7. I used to be a very judgmental person. Involved in the IFB church and was in church every time the doors were open. After losing my 10 year old son in an auto accident, it changed me. I no longer go to the IFB church, I no longer go to church constantly. I also don’t judge people. That IS God’s job. We are called to LOVE. That is what I do. I am a safe place for all regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnicity, straight, gas, bi, trans, whatever….I LOVE YOU.

  8. What a great post Brian. Sorry I’m storming your site, but this is my day to catch up on my favorite blogs. I love Dolly and her philosophy on life. What an inspiration. Hugs, C

    1. She really is an inspiration. I’m not a singer, I don’t have my own amusement park named after me, I don’t have a book program that gives books to school children, but when I grow up, I want to be like her. Love the way she “rolls” through challenges and life.
