My guardian angel

Life can be hard.

Since life likes to throw us a few surprises, I’m convinced that we’re given angels along the way to help us meet each day’s challenges. No, no, they don’t have wings and they look nothing like Clarence, the simpleton and guardian angel from It’s a Wonderful Life, who helps George Bailey see the positive influence his good deeds have had on his town and his friends throughout his life.

These angels are just regular people who come along and help us get through both big and small challenges. I’m talking about the old woman who held the door open for me the other day, when I had my hands full with my coffee and breakfast and nearly spilled everything or the construction worker in the huge work truck who paid for my coffee the next day when we’re both in the drive through lane at Dunkin’ Donut.

We come across people like that every day. We rarely think of them, outside of the moment in time, but they’re there.

The mom who gave me a thankful head nod when I stepped aside, so that her young daughter who wasn’t watching where she was going wouldn’t run into my cart. The cashier who laughed at my stupid joke when I just trying to pass the time of day.

We have bigger influencers in our lives too. I’m talking about teachers and mentors and, of course, family members who help shape us and guide us. They’re an amazing thing.

I write more about everyday angels in my weekly post on The Heart of The Matter. In my story, An angel when I needed it the most, I write about my sixth grade teacher who came along at the perfect time for me when I was facing a ton of adversity. I’m convinced he saved me from myself.

Check out my story and let me know who has helped you along in your journey. Teachers? Friends? Mentors?

  1. Being the recipient of an angelic gesture is heartwarming, but reaching out to perform an angelic act for someone else is exhilarating. Graciously appreciating good deeds as you do completes the circuit of kindness!

    1. Yes, I believe that. If I focus too much on my own situation, if I let the green eyed monster of envy run crazy, I can get myself into a pretty miserable funk, but if I start to appreciate what I have and focus on others, it’s amazing to me how quickly I get out of my depression and get the hope I need to keep on going! Thank you Douglass 😎😎😎

  2. Angels don’t always have wings.

    😊

I realised we think alike. I was drafting something with the title ‘Angels don’t always have wings’.

Have you heard the song with the same title by Thomas Rhett?

    1. Oh, I can’t wait to see what you post Emaistace! I just think there’s more good in the world than I sometimes think or understand. And thank you so much for pointing out that song. I hadn’t heard it! When I’m struggling writing, I find that music always helps … especially slower songs like that one! Love it😎😎😎

      1. Oh this is so beautiful to hear. Not crazy at all. I love to hear such things about music.
It’s such a beautiful thing. It does so much.
It heals me when I’m sad and down.
I remember refusing to listen to music for a few days because I knew it would heal me and I wasn’t ready to heal yet.

  3. My mom was a big believer in angels. We went to see an opera without tickets and a woman in a blue dress walked up to us while we were in line and gave us two tickets for free. My mom said “That was our blue angel.” Blue was her favorite color. I was in first or second grade and that was my first memory of angels in real life.

    1. Ha, ha, I was just joking with a cousin about a Buffalo bills game he took me to as a kid. We went with two of my cousin’s friends. We had a long drive to get to buffalo and they forgot their tix. No one offfered to give them tix. They eventually got in, however, but it’s always been a funny joke between us. Maybe they really were my angel! I never forget things like that now!!!! Ha ha!

    1. I hope it doesn’t make it too overly-dramatic. I just know that when I look for the good in everyday life, I’m happier and have a better attitude about things. I keep “envy” at arms length. I’m less selfish and quicker to think about others. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, I hope my piece made sense. Thank you as always Kym. 🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. Oh your post made amazing sense Brian. Thank you for sharing your empathy and compassionate side. I believe that through the years, as we go through life with its myriad of challenges, we find that sweet spot where those angels show us the bright light of hope and humanity. I am so there with you my friend. 🥰🥂😊 Thanks for the encouragement! 🙏🏽

  5. I have difficulty with mobility and use a walker. Wherever I go, doctor, restaurant, shopping, or elsewhere, someone always stops and holds a door open for me. I never ask or expect it, but it just happens. It has really restored my faith in people’s kindness. It seems to make them happy to have an opportunity to help someone. There are many, many angels out there looking for a way to earn their wings.

  6. It’s the little things, the small acts of kindness, that matter most. At the end of the day, those moments make us (well, me) smile. They’re the frosting on the cake. Thank you for a wonderful post, Brian.

  7. This is a wonderful post and reminder of those angels in our lives who help uplift our spirits when they’ve fallen close to ground’s level. Along with family, teachers and friends have been my angels throughout the years. Thanks for sharing, Brian.

  8. It really is the small stuff that makes such a difference, like you noted. Angels are all around us when we open our eyes and hearts. We are so lucky and blessed.
