Our dog Nittany jumped down from our couch the other night and she landed awkwardly on the hardwood floor on her back leg. Nittany, our fifteen-year-old, Lhasa Apsa – Bichon Frise, wobbled and then straightened up. She walked the rest of the night with a little hitch.
She fortunately looked better the next day, but I can’t get around the fact that she’s getting older. When I look at Nittany, I see a puppy, but she’s far from it. Over the years, her whiskers have turned from black to gray; she can’t jump like she used to; and she spends most of her days sleeping. I can see the years catching up to her.
Of course, later in the evening, I came across this poem about dogs getting older. It hit me directly in the heart. Oh, Nittany, I love you sweet girl.
What do you do when your dog grows old?
What do you do when your dog grows old? When his feet are tired, and the pads are worn? When your words of praise are muffled in his ears, and his eyes are milky from their years of use? When his face is grizzled and his color isn’t as vibrant?
You love him.
You rub the feet that dutifully carried him by your side. You speak your praises more loudly, so everybody else can hear the words that he can’t. You guide him the way he has guided you and prevent him from getting lost as you were before he came along.
You kiss his muzzle and admire the wisdom that has beset him in his later years. And when it comes time to put him to his final rest, knowing that an irreplaceable part of your heart will follow him, you will do so knowing that you loved him.
And he loved you more. He loved you more.

Oh my….sending oodles of love to sweet Nittany. Your description of that ‘hitch’ in the way she moved, following a wonky landing, sounded so familiar. Our Sadie mama would shake off those moments and carry on. No whimpers or calls for attention but they added up over time. Love Nittany up! Extra snuggles from me – just because. 💕

Oh, I hear you Vicki. They do add up. Of course, I could be talking about myself.🤣🤣 And yes, I’ll be sure to give her an extra hug, she’ll love that!

Yay! Make sure to tell her they’re from me! 😎🥰😎

Already did. I said you were giving her big hugs — she loved them, was actually very adorable. I said I wanted to give her a hug — she turned and walked away. I swear this dog is a cat! Ha ha! Nah, she’ll take all the hugs she can get.

Aww…I’m glad you did the ‘dedicated hug’ thing from me. Makes my morning! 🥰

Our 12 year old Lewellyn Setter died almost 4 years ago. We miss him every day. T

Oooh that does tug at the heart! I literally just finished a post about dogs. LOL!
What a cute dog and yes they are so precious. Our Sheltie is 15 and our Yorkie is 13, so this poem is perfect. 💛 Thanks!

Yes, I found that poem and of course, it hit home. Hard not to see the extra winces when you read it. Sounds like you know exactly what I mean. Love our pets, er, family members!

Oh my, tears coming down here! Beautiful post Brian, I’m missing our Shaggy, same thing, she aged faster than we did. Extra love for Nittany, she precious. Hugs, C

I joke about Nittany but she’s a great dog. Very gentle and loving. She’s family! Funny how she’s nudged her way into our hearts!

So glad he’s healing. Yes, they get older and that’s when they need us even more.

Yes, it’s kind of strange lifting her up but she still gets around well, just can’t do some of the things that used to come naturally to her. She’s a great pup though. She’s family.

Of course, pets are family. They are our babies. We have to take care of them. (And sorry I said “he” — typo).
They are just the best!! So much love inside of them; so smart; so understanding.

You’re right, so much love. That’s why I don’t understand how people can be so mean to them, don’t understand.

Your girl is such a sweetheart Brian. I admit, I couldn’t make it very far into the poem–just too sad for me with all the memories of former pets that have left my life.

Like Deb, I wasn’t able to finish the poem. Pets really do leave their prints on our lives. Years and decades later, there’s still here with us. Wishing Nittany good health, belly rubs, treats, and lots of love for the rest of her days. 🐶💕

Aww, she appreciates the well wishes. She’s lucky, she’s got a lot of people who love her! Plenty of belly rubs.

What a beautiful girl! No, I couldn’t make it through the poem either…hits too close to home. Please give her a special hug and a kiss from me!

Aww, thank you! I’m sorry for you. The thing I tell my kids all the time is to remember the good times. How we brought her home and how she had done nothing but give us love. Thank you!

Our 15-year-old Angus passed away. My husband was taking him to the vet. My daughter who was in high school said she was going, too. I wasn’t going to be the chicken who stayed home. It was a sad day. For weeks, I would cry grocery shopping if I found myself in the pet food aisle. We haven’t been able to get another dog since. Thanks for the tears today. But you gave me a chance to reflect on all the love our big yellow lab Angus gave us.

Aww, I’m sorry E.A. At least, I hope my brought back some great memories!!!!!You’ve just described what’s going through my head, I can’t look at Nittany and not think about huge milestones in our life. I see the kids, I see my wife and me. She’ll probably make me look bad and live for 15 more years but I’m just tryin to psyche myself up in case it’s shorter. She’s a family member now. Thanks for sharing!

Our pets are definitely family members. I think I’ll have to write about Angus soon. He was such a good dog and a character.

Oh that’s awesome. Take your time. It’s hard to write about our pets, but you’ll find the right time.

Oh thank you Natalie! I just took a short nap with Nitt and told her that her fan base is sending hugs. She thinks I should change my blog to everything Nittany! We’ll see about that one, but hopefully my piece brought back some great memories for you.

Rarely is there a dog story that doesn’t tug at my heart. This is one of them. I never knew how much I loved dogs until I got one. What a blessed gift they are! Hugs to Brittany from me! 💕🐶

Oh, this is so good. I’m glad Nittany is okay but I feel you about watching our beloved pets age. They are such amazing companions.

Yes, I thought of you guys with Cooper. I hope I didn’t bring you down. Nittany is still doing fine, it’s just harder to overlook the aging. She probably says the same thing about me. Slower in feeding her. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Ha, ha, ha! No, it didn’t bring me down. I remember watching my beloved Biscuit go through the same. It’s a poignant invitation to treasure all our moments with them! ❤

Girl. you got me straight through the heart as I recently had to lay my Reese to rest in his final resting place in our backyard with a cement plaque telling everyone who reads it how loyal he truly was. He was a teacup wiener or miniature. I’m not 100% sure but he was small, and the daddy of 6 puppies. Their momma is a Yorkie-Pomeranian. I called them “Palm-Your-Weener’s”, lmfao. I thought it was funny as hell.
