I try to stay busy. Yup, that’s the only thing that really seems to work.
I was working in my yard recently and I’ve come down with a case of the “itchies.” I’m not sure what exactly happened. I was pruning some bushes and then mowed our grass. With summer coming to a close, I’ve been trying to get out in the yard and make up for the lack of attention I’ve been giving it and offer a little TLC before colder weather comes storming in.
In my haste, I either touched some poison ivy or poison sumac or was bitten by a slew of mosquitos. I have itchy spots and bumps on both my ankles and left knee.
Mind over matter
So, for the past week, I’ve been trying to keep busy so that I don’t stop and think about the itching. I’ve been trying to keep myself from thinking or getting annoyed by my itchy skin. I’ve also been using a ton over the counter hydrocortisone and anti-itch creams and taking allergy medicine.
I grew up in the country, but I’ve never quite gotten used to running into poison ivy and such. You’d think I’d be more careful now, at least deal with the itch better than I have, but it hits me head-on every summer. I haven’t had to go to the doctor yet, but I will be soon if the itching doesn’t stop.
Foolish me
Of course, Dr. Google has let me know that I should expect symptoms for five to twelve days and possibly even longer. The good doctor even reminded me — as if I didn’t already know — that scratching an itch, just makes it worse.
I feel like such a fool. I should know better. Ugh.

Cheers to you for ‘getting out there’ to tend to the garden, the yard. I recall Mark Petruska doing battle with poison ivy not that long ago…and it was a very unpleasant adventure for him. Here’s hoping you get relief soon! 😉

Cortizone 10 creams will help, Brian. Give it a try, and kudos to you for getting out there to show some love for your property!

Yea, it’s getting better. Just me whining. It’s mother nature’s payback for me not taking care of the yard. Ha ha ha. Thanks!

Just think how nice your yard looks Brian! That must be worth a bit of irritation right as the neighbors admire your efforts 😉

It’s getting there. Slowly but surely. Ha, ha, just in time for fall and winter. Ha, ha.

I’m not sure if I’d prefer the itch of poison ivy or the stab of a cactus. My husband picked a prickly pear and put it on the center console of the car. I got microscopic stabs in my fingers that hurt for days. Yes, I let him hear about it! We have prickly pears at home. Why couldn’t he pick one and deal with it in the backyard? But he stopped driving somewhere and put it in the car. Sometimes he is like a young child who cannot help himself from touching things.

Ha, ha, that’s too funny. We were at a garden shop recently and my wife probably could have said the same thing about me. She was definitely questioning my sanity. But the thrill of it!!!! Ha, ha. There are not enough cactus here, so I would probably pick that over stupid poison ivy. At least cactus look cool. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think I found the solution to my husband wanting to try prickly pears. They come scrubbed clean of pricklies at the store!

Something tells me that your husband isn’t the first thrill-seeker . . . they’re onto us crazy husbands. Ha, ha.

Happy healing Brian. It takes some serious discipline to keep the urge to scratch at bay. Keep on keeping on! You have my sympathy!

So, the lesson is to stay inside and not do yard work! Thank you! 🤣

That is no fun… My sister got it pretty bad on one arm and I seem to remember it lasting way longer than a month. I hope yours isn’t the same kind.

It’s mainly gone now, but I’m such an idiot for getting it in the first place. My own stupidity for not taking better precautions. Ha ha

That’s a tad harsh with yourself.
My sister didn’t realise when she grabbed a handful of “grass” to feed a horse that she also had poison ivy…

Yea, I’m being a little hard on myself, but I’m just mad at myself. Ha, ha, I knew it was there, but still got it on me. Gives me another reason to give up yard work. 🙂 🙂

I do understand that, too…
And hey, whatever works to get out of a job!!
