I’m not sure I’ve ever seen my wife happier. Her smile is sparkling like the North Star. Christmas came early for her this year—and all it took was me losing my voice.
We went away for the weekend, and on the drive home Sunday, I noticed I was getting hoarse. I hadn’t been yelling or cheering, so it came out of nowhere. I wasn’t sick or having any other problems with allergies, either. Later that night, trying to talk took actual physical effort. I nearly hurt a rib just trying to tell her that I was going to go to bed.

When I stopped at my local coffee spot on Monday morning, it took everything I had just to croak out my simple order: “Medium hot coffee, extra cream.” My whole body shook from the strain. Forget about whispering, too—a whisper just sounds like a muddy bullfrog jumping out of my throat.
It’s a dangerous position to be in. I have zero leverage, I can’t talk back, I can’t express my feelings, and I can’t give my opinion. I was on a video conference call on Monday, and a coworker thought I was having a seizure when I tried to weigh in on a key team decision. I texted him right after that I was fine—just trying to project my voice so everyone could hear me.
My wife, though, is having an absolute ball with it.
“You’re not interested in watching football tonight, right? No Monday Night Football?” she asked, not waiting a second for a response. “Oh, awesome! Let’s stream Grey’s Anatomy, or Lioness, or one of those detective shows you normally hate. That’s wonderful!”
Next came the task list: “Let’s talk about the calendar this week and all the new chores I need you to do around the house.”
In fact, I’m starting to think she’s having too much fun. “Oh, you’re going to go pick up dinner for us? That’s so sweet. Just make sure there are no onions on my salad. Remember be sure to say ‘N-o O-n-i-o-n-s.’ Write it out so you don’t strain your voice.”
“You can’t talk? That’s okay, let me tell you all about my day. It was a whopper. I can go on and on and on…”

It feels like a bad 70s sitcom. Jack Tripper loses his voice on Three’s Company, and Janet and Chrissy have to translate for him so he doesn’t blow the big promotion. I don’t know if that was a real episode or not, but living through something similar, it sure feels like one.
My wife is enjoying my quiet way too much at my expense. I don’t seem to have any other symptoms, but I’m resting up and drinking plenty of water. I can’t wait to get a say again. I’m hopeful that I’ll be shouting from the treetops and doing my best Santa Claus impression—ho, ho, ho—soon enough.
“Hello, beautiful wife. You were saying…?”
Yes, yes… let’s hope soon enough.

Well, your voice will return and then you can tell your wife how mean she is. 😂🤣 Just kidding, Brian.

Zero ability to voice your resistance against Gray’s Anatomy. 😂 Oh boy, sounds like Santa is playing a mean prank on you, Brian!

I really don’t mind Grey’s but it’s funny about not having a voice. Ha, ha.

That sounds incredibly frustrating especially with trying to manage everything at home and work. Just rest those vocal cords and let your wife handle the talking for a few days!

Brian, I’m trying to muster up the appropriate amount of sympathy here, but I have to admit, it’s extremely difficult. I suspect your wife has a pretty good handle on the advantage handed to her. Asking questions and answering them herself before you can so much as croak an objection… SWEET!!!
Oh wait, is that her I hear in the background…
“You don’t mind if I turn the thermostat up a couple of degrees, do you? Wonderful.”
“You agree that we really don’t need to compare prices before I order this? I knew you’d see it my way.”
“You think we should rearrange the living room furniture Saturday? Perfect! I’ll point, you lift.”
“And since you’re not using the remote tonight, I’ll just hang onto it.”
She could even start settling old disputes. “Remember that argument we had in 2019? I’m glad we finally agree that I was right.”
And I definitely wouldn’t waste this golden opportunity on a mere chore list. She needs to think bigger. This could be the most peaceful stretch of unanimous marital decision-making she has experienced in years.
Rest that voice, my friend—but perhaps not TOO long. At this rate, by the time you can speak again, you may discover you’ve agreed to repaint the kitchen, clean out the garage, watch seven seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, and take her somewhere lovely for Christmas.

If you only knew how close you are on all your suggested comments. Ha, ha, yes, I’m definitely in the minority here. Thankfully, my voice is coming back . . . can’t come back soon enough. Ha, ha.

I hope this remains a joke and doesn’t turn into something serious. I lost my voice completely once and it turned out to be a sudden and unexpected allergy to aspirin. (which I had taken with no problems all my life)

Ya gotta laugh at the crazy things life throws at you. Losing my voice for two days. That certainly wasn’t what I suspected might happen in 2026. Crazy. I’m doing better but just laughing at things. Thanks John.

I have two words for you…hand gestures. That may or may not be appropriate…just saying 😎🤣

C’mon on Tracie, she’s Philly-born. Her parents moved out to the burbs when she was a teen but it still “took.” I have no chance. I’m “dead man walking.” Ha, ha, I’m kidding, but you get the idea. 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎

If yu are allowed to voice an opinion you are a lucky man. I presented the conundrum to my wife “If a man is in the woods all alone and says something is he still wrong?” Her answer was, “Of course.”

Touché John. How silly of me to forget that major detail. Ha ha, love your wife’s response. I suspect my wife would say the same thing!!!!! 😎😎😎

I can’t be losing my mind, can I? There was a stupid episode like that, right. There had to be. I’m losing my mind but I still remember 70s stuff pretty good. Ha ha.

We’ve probably all been there. Tell your wife you need a kiss to turn the frog into a handsome prince❤️

I’m gonna try that. I suspect she’ll tell me that she’s been kissing a frog for the past 30 some years and it hasn’t given her a Prince yet. Why will it work now? Ha ha.

😂 This is so funny, Brian, not the part about you losing your voice, which is terrible, but the fun your wife is having. You should keep one of those small white dry-erase boards around so that the next time it happens, you can communicate with her that way.

Yea, she’s not letting a dry erase board slow her down. Plus, my handwriting is so bad …. I really couldn’t expect anyone with a sane brain to be able to figure out what I was trying to say!!!! Ha ha. Good I’m getting my voice back!!!!

Ya gotta laugh at the little things! I’m sure she’s shaking her head at me. When she does that, I like to remind her that she married me!!!!! And she vowed “for better, for worse …. to love and to cherish, till death do us part.” Ha ha, she’s stuck with me.

This had me laughing out loud, Brian! The imagery of trying to croak out a simple coffee order and sounding like a muddy bullfrog is as hilarious as it is relatable. I loved the Three’s Company reference—you really were living out a classic 70s sitcom setup! I completely agreed with Edward Ortiz that keeping a dry-erase board handy might be your only line of defense next time, and Kimberly’s breakdown of all the ‘unanimous’ marital decisions your wife could settle had me rolling. Glad to hear your voice is starting to make its return!

So glad to hear your voice is on the mend, Brian! Voices can be surprisingly fragile, but glad your wife has been such a great sport through the quiet stretch.

This had me laughing, Brian! 😂 Your wife certainly knows how to make the most of the situation while you’re temporarily unable to object. The Grey’s Anatomy and chore-list moments were priceless. Hope your voice returns soon before she discovers even more advantages! 😄

I can see my wife and I having fun with this. I used to get an annual cold in the winter when I’d completely lose my voice, even though I felt okay. It often took a week or two to get over, and I had to go in each day after school to write a lesson plan and get things ready for the substitute teacher for the next day.

Oh my goodness Pete . . . that’s crazy. Sick but not sick. Hate that you still had to go in to work to write your lesson plan. I’m getting better, but it still catches me by surprise.
