We’ve got a man down!

If things were up to me, Earth would stop spinning on its axis today. Life as we know it would take a timeout. No school. No work. I’m not asking for a complete shutdown—nothing like that. Instead, I want the world and all its crazy passengers to take a short time-out.

We often have an intense desire for the world to stop or slowdown when we have a death in our family. It’s nothing like that. My family is fine. Everyone is fine. Time needs to stop because . . . well, I’m feeling under the weather.

I had a serious cold and cough three weeks ago. I suffered through it like a good soldier for a few days, and thankfully it moved on. Two good golf claps, a dutiful thumbs-up, and it’s time to move on, right? However, I came home late last week, and my throat felt scratchy. As the night wore on, I developed a persistent, hacking cough. I never got a fever, but I felt run down and drained. I felt like I had run ten miles up a mountain.

Mount Everest? K2? No, just me pulling myself up from the couch and dragging myself to an early bedtime. In recent days, my cough, cold, and sniffling nose has continued to get worse. I feel like I’m in a constant state of fog and uneasiness. Yes, we checked for covid — all is fine there.

In the words of my wife, I have “man flu.”

On my deathbed

She says it with kindness, but full of dripping sarcasm. It’s the mocking term some folks give men claiming that we exaggerate the symptoms of a common cold or minor respiratory illness.

In her eyes, she sees me milking this for all its worth. Imagine Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford from the 70s show Sanford and Son. In a running gag on the show, Foxx would clutch his chest and fake a “heart attack” to get out of work and to manipulate his son, Lamont.

“It’s the big one! You hear that Elizabeth, I’m coming to join ya, honey!”

In reality, I’m just trying to breathe again without wheezing. I remind my wife that researchers have studied the sexes and some research suggests that men may experience worse symptoms than women due to weaker immune systems or higher vulnerability to complications.

Pushing up daisies

In particular, one study found evidence that men have higher rates of influenza-related hospitalizations and deaths. Other research suggests that lower testosterone levels may lead to better immune responses, while higher testosterone may suppress the immune system, potentially making men more susceptible to severe viral symptoms.

When my wife goes to the kitchen to get me a glass of water, I pull up several different research stories on man flu. I make sure to close out the ones that poke holes or raise questions about the premise. On my large-screen monitor, I put front and center the ones from distinguished sources like the Harvard Medical School saying that man flu might just be a thing.

Yea, how about them Apples!

A visit from the Grim Reaper

My wife rolls her eyes at me. When she goes out to get me some more cough medicine and ginger ale to calm my stomach, I thank her for her help. I know how fortunate I am. I have no idea if man flu is true or not, I just know that I’m a horrible patient. And if I ever lost her, I’d be in real trouble.

I’m sick with a spring cold, but I still keep my twisted, gallows humor. I joke with her that I need help getting back into bed. Clean-up needed on Aisle 8. We’ve got a man down.

I tell my wife not to laugh too much at me. I remind her that the odds are against her. She’s a teacher and often comes home with a cold or flu that she picked up from one of her kids. If I’m getting sick, the chances are high that I got the cold from her. And she’s probably not far behind me.

Yes, the world needs to stop and take a break until we both feel better!

    1. I’ll live! Ha ha, I’m getting better. I had to write about it. I’ll be better once the temperatures start to even out. I tend to get spring colds when it’s still deciding if it’s going to be cold or warm outside. Ha ha. 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣

    1. Hey, that’s right, the story comes first. I’ll live with a crummy cold as long as I get a good blog out of it. Ha ha. Yes, I’m feeling better now. Just had to laugh that winter wasn’t going lightly — throwing me a few challenges before going quietly in the night!!! 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤣🤣🤣😎😎 Thank you for the well wishes.

  1. There has been a horrible upper respiratory flue going around my part of the country. Instead of the usual week to ten days duration, as turned into weeks. Hope you are feeling better soon. Also tell your wife to hang in there too.

    1. My wife has a high threshold for pain. I’m strong until I’m not. Ha ha and then I’m with the best whiners out there. Yes, I’ll survive. I tend to get one of these colds in the early fall and late spring. Mother Nature reminding me who the real boss is!!! 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

  2. This made me feel amused and light 😄 It has that playful, self-aware humor that made me smile the whole way through. I could feel the exaggeration, but in a fun, relatable way, especially the “man flu” moments. It felt cozy too, like watching a couple tease each other while still caring deeply. By the end, I just felt entertained and a little warm inside.

  3. Brian, I hope that you feel much better very soon! Being sick really sucks. You reminded me of a Rush song from the 80s called Time Stand Still. I wish the world would stand still just once…

      1. I saw them in concert at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit back then, excellent! That arena is gone… Rush has a new drummer and are touring or will be touring soon. The drummer is a woman and wow can she play! Neil would be very proud. Nobody played the skins as well as Neil Peart!

    1. That was the idea Vicki! If I gotta be sick then I better get a funny blog out of it. Ha ha, hopefully there were a few laughs! I’m feeling better. Half my problem is the cold then warm and then back to cold weather. I can be a bit of a whiner about colds. Surprise, surprise! 🤣🤣🤣😎

      1. I hear you…around here we’ve had a tease of a 60- or 70-degree day…and then plummet into winter again. Nutty, nutty and the body has no idea what season we’re in. But you bring the funny – year-round, don’tcha??? 😜💝😜

  5. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Have you tested for COVID? We have friends who moved by us from Palm Springs the same year. They have been down for three weeks with COVID and said it’s the worst they’ve ever had. They have intense coughs and sore throats. The wife went to Urgent Care yesterday. You might have something worse than the man flu!

    1. Fortunately no covid. I might have been exaggerating a little. A little. But yes, I’m glad to be back on my feet. It’s gotten warmer today. The worst was probably Monday. Feelin much better. Just hate winter holding on, keeping me cold and feeling yucky. Thanks for the kind words😎😎😎😎

  6. Brian, I want you to know how sorry I am that you are sick. But seriously, you made me choke with laughter! Good golly. Even being near death’s door your humor is healthy!
On another note, I’m so happy I got to meet you. It’s been so nice knowing you.

    1. Run! Run K.L. Run! Run straight to the nearest urgent care. You get my humor! Oh, no, you poor soul! Ooh, I hear there’s a vaccine for that now. At least some kind magic cure that cures you of that horrible predicament! Ha ha. Thank you … I’m doing better. I can breathe now. Plus, if I’m really really honest, I might not have been quite that sick. I was tired and definitely lacking sleep but I’ve taken a turn for the better. Wahooo! Thanks for the kind words.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤣🤣😎😎😎😎

  7. Oh, I’m so sorry, Brian. But I love how you’ve kept your sense of humor. You are so right – the world just needs to slow down when we are sick so we can catch our breath. For men and for women! Take it easy, my friend!

    1. Brainstormin here but wouldn’t it be great if it was like garage clicker. You click once … everything stops. You click again and the world starts up again. We’ve got AI now. It shouldn’t be that hard to create and build. Where’s the AI genius’s when you really need them? 🤣🤣🤣🤣😎
