Oh, to be a kid again!

I had to buy a mouse for my work computer. The box came yesterday covered in bubble wrap. Yup, you guessed it. For the next hour, I kept myself busy in meetings popping the bubbles. Someone said something amusing, pop-pop. Another person said something important about a project I’m working on, pop-pop-pop.

Oh, thank goodness for the mute button.

But the silliness of the moment reminded me of a general truth about life. If you cut most people open. If you break us down to our simplest form . . . to our core . . . to our center . . . we’re kids at heart. We’re children. We find joy in simple things, maintaining curiosity, and experiencing wonder.

I may be in my late fifties. I may slouch when I stand up. I may have a hundred and one adult worries and concerns floating through my head. However, give me a 3×5 piece of cushioned air-filled bubbles and I’m a ten year old kid again. Pop. Pop. Pop. Oh, life’s little wonders.

I think there are a few other everyday things that have a way of turning back time. Whether you’re 20 or 120, they bring out our childhood glee.

Here’s a few of them:

–Crayons. The original Crayola Crayons. The smell. The waxy feel. The best.

–A Slinky and Silly String.

–Music from our youth.

–Bugs Bunny, Wile E Coyote and the Roadrunner.

–A Rubrik’s Cube.

–Getting on a swing or sliding down a slide.

–Bubble gum.

–Charlotte’s Web.

–Having $5 in your hand and ordering an ice cream cone from a local stand or an ice cream truck while it plays a catchy jingle to get the attention of parents and kids.

–A blue sky.

–Magic.

–Riding a Carousel.

In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

I know my childhood is long gone, but I love how bubble wrap and crayons remind me that anything is possible and give me a glimpse every so often of what it means to be a kid.

Oh to be a kid again.

What would you add to my list?

  1. Love all of these! Love! I’ll share a story about bubble wrap at another time. In fact I have a blog almost ready to hatch on that..

I’d add Big Wheels to the list. Wait – is it there? lol The freedom of taking off on a huge what I thought was a motorcycle at the time was everything! Joy!

    1. Big wheels were hot stuff! When I finally got one … thought I was the man. I had to stop myself recently. I was starting to sound like an old curmudgeon. We were pulling out of our driveway and I complained to my wife how a kid and his bike playing on the street were so small. I was being a whiner. She reminded me that our big wheels were even lower on the ground. I shut up instantly! Ha ha!

    1. Yes, good grief, what am thinking? $5? My wife and I went to an ice cream shop recently and were floored by how much we spent. It was just the two of us and it was a specialty shop but geeesh!! Ha ha, I guess a sign of being a kid again is forgetting about what things really cost!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Rainbows and hopscotch board! Perfect.

  2. I would include sitting in a movie theater on Saturdays and watching the same movie over and over. Buying a candy bar for a nickel. Riding the streetcar. Returning glass soda bottles for a refund. Playing jacks and jumping rope. I’m sure there are many more I could list. I still like to pop bubble wrap too.

    1. Oh these are good! I love the movie theater for that reason. It’s one of the reasons I was a pushover for the kids 1.) in going to see movies and 2.) in getting popcorn. Hard for me to say no. When I was a kid, we’d get the coke and Pepsi bottles and take them back to the grocery store. Loved that!

  3. Right there with you, Brian. I still love collecting rocks and shells and sticks and playing in the woods and playing in the sand and reading my children’s books and playing badminton and playing board games and playing charades and more.
