Taking your breath away!

I’m a sucker for a great romantic line. I love how a great line from a favorite book or romantic comedy takes you to another world. They inspire and remind us why friends — whether romantic or platonic — and love are so important to us. The lines can be as deep as “You make my heart skip a beat” or “You are my sunshine.” Or as simple as “You mean the world to me.”

Here’s a few of my favorite romantic phrases, sayings, and sentiments:

–“When the day shall come that we do part, if my last words are not ‘I love you,’ you ken it’s because I didn’t have time.”  —Diana Gabaldon, Outlander, Season 1, Episode 11.

–“Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at hello. You had me at hello.” —Jerry McGuire (1996).

–“You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love… I love… I love you.” —Pride And Prejudice (2005).

–“Why, darling, I don’t live at all when I’m not with you.” —Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms.

–“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day.” —The Notebook (2004).

–“Anyone who has seen her smile has known perfection. She instills grace in every common thing and divinity in every careless gesture.” —Edmond Rostand’s play Cyrano de Bergerac.

–“Just in case you ever foolishly forget; I’m never not thinking of you.” —Virginia Woolf.

–“I like myself better when I’m with you.” —Mitch Albom, Tuesdays with Morrie.

–“It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them.” —Agatha Christie.

–“You want the moon? Just say the word Mary, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down.” —It’s A Wonderful Life (1946).

–“Listen to me, mister. You’re my knight in shining armor. Don’t you forget it.” —On Golden Pond (1981).

–“He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest.” —W.H. Auden, Stop all the Clocks.

“Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me… it brought me to you.” —Titanic (1997).

–“I would not wish any companion in the world but you.” —William Shakespeare.

–“I’d rather spend a lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.” J.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

–“You’re the closest thing I have to magic.” J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

–“Doubt thou the stars do are fire; Doubt thou the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love.” William Shakespeare, Hamlet.

–“To love or have loved, that is enough. Ask nothing further.” —Victor Hugo, Les Miserables.

–“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” —When Harry Met Sally (1989).

–“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” —A.A. Milne, Winnie The Pooh.

–“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” —1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

–“You don’t love someone for their looks, or their clothes or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.” —Oscar Wilde.

–“I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” —Notting Hill (1999).

–“You are part of my existence, part of myself. You have been in every line I have ever read.” —Charles Dickens.

–“Grow old along with me; the best is yet to be.” —Robert Browning.

–“You are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.” —Moulin Rouge (2001).

–“I’m not the silly romantic you think… I want… a steady hand. A kind soul. I want to fall asleep, and wake, knowing my heart is safe. I want to love, and be loved.” —Shana Abe.

–“It has made me better loving you … it has made me wiser, and easier, and brighter.” —Henry James, The Portrait of A Lady.

–“It doesn’t matter if the guy is perfect or the girl is perfect, as long as they are perfect for each other.” —Good Will Hunting (1997).

Happy Valentines to you and yours.

  1. So sweet! So many of these quotes live permanently in my brain as well.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours as well. And when I was watching the When Harry Met Sally clip, it made me think of John Green’s Anthropocene reviewed essay/podcast/youtube about Auld Lang Syne. A great read or listen if you want to cry some tears over love, and/or know what that song is about.

    1. Okay, you’ve piqued my interest. I googled it and now I gotta listen to Green’s podcast. Wow, thanks for the suggestion. And yes, some of these quotes do live on. My wife constantly repeats the Notting Hill “I’m just girl line, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” quote. Of course, she usually holds off on the love part. Instead, her version usually goes, just a girl . . . “asking her husband to take out the damn garbage!” Or “waiting on her husband to figure out where he wants to go out to eat tonight.” Ha, ha, I guess this means I need to work on my Valentine gifts. Ha, ha.

  2. These are all good. My favourite is the one from Pride and Prejudice. I also love the line from the song by The Waterboys, “How log will I love you? As long as stars are above you. And longer if I may.” Happy Valentine’s day!

  3. The Notebook, man, that’s a movie that moves you to tears quickly. I read the title of your post and was expecting the Top Gun song “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin. But that’s okay, I’m watching the music video on YouTube now. So good.

  4. Wow. You have certainly compiled a great list, Brian. I think I need to give it to Agatha Christie. That one made me smile the most. Also, I learned from another blogger that this part: “when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible” was actually not in the script but ad-libbed. Not bad, right?!

    1. Rob Reiner originally had Harry and Sally going their separate ways. But in the middle of shooting he fell in love and they changed the ending. I hope I have that right? Ha, ha. And yes, I love that Agatha Christie comment too. I joke with my wife that that is how we’ve been able to stay married. My wife takes one look at me doing something ridiculous and laughs. She then realizes that of course she has to stay with me. The power of the funny guy over the handsome Madison Avenue model. Ha, ha, I hope so anyway!!!
