The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, November 16-22.
What I’m grateful for:
—Pausing to say thank you. There’s lots of debate over the First Thanksgiving in the colonies, but most historians attribute it to a three-day harvest festival in 1621 between 90 Wampanoag people and 52 Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The event was a celebration of a successful harvest. The Wampanoag, led by Massasoit, attended after hearing of the celebration and brought their own deer meat to share. No matter the origin, there’s something to pausing with friends and family and saying thank you.

—Pumpkin Pie. Need I say more.

—Turkey trots. Why did the chicken cross the road? He was running neck and neck with a turkey in the local 5K Turkey Trot. The winner got to make a wish with the wishbone!

What gave me a smile?
I’m a little early, but starting to get in the Thanksgiving mindset.

I read that there were very few women left of those Pilgrims, mostly teenaged girls. One of those was my ancestor, Elizabeth Tilly, who was orphaned the first winter. She eventually married John Howland, who came over as an indentured servant and is the one who survived being washed overboard on the way over!
May you have a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving, Brian!

Surviving getting washed overboard. Surviving becoming an orphan. Yes, great things to say thank you! Great perspective Joy! Thank you.

I love this weekly gratitude habit — it’s such a grounding way to slow down and reconnect with what matters. Your reflection on the early Thanksgiving history was thoughtful, and honestly, pumpkin pie alone deserves its own gratitude list. 🥧😂
The turkey trot bit made me smile too — perfect way to step into the Thanksgiving mood. Wishing you a cozy, joyful week ahead!

A great commercial to see starting off Thanksgiving Week 2025, Brian. It really is a time of year to take a deep breath, slow down, and give thanks. Lots to be thankful for each and every day, and this holiday is a reminder of that fact.

I think the origin does matter, buuut, I hear you. We should naturally pause every now and then to offer gratitude.

Thanks for calling that out Kathy. I was probably a bit too flippant. You’re right, our history does matter. Our current times tell us that. Thanks for hitting the point I was trying to make. Happy Thanksgiving.
