The Big Three: Dreaming up a solution

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, October 19-25.

—Finding a solution to a problem. I was struggling earlier this month to fit a square peg into a round hole. I felt like I was clobbering my head against a cement wall. I stepped away and when I went back to my problem I found a way to solve the problem. Sometimes we just need to approach the problem from a different perspective. Here’s to never giving up.

—Wrote my way out of Hell! In the song Hurricane, Lin Manuel Miranda describes how Alexander Hamilton faces the problems that come his way. More often than not Hamilton resorted to attempting to write his way out of the problem. A man after my own heart. I’ve never faced the problems that Hamilton faced in his life. He was orphaned and had to fight his way up from nothing. However, when challenged or facing a mountain in front of me, I’ve tried more often than not to write my way out of the problem.

I love these lyrics.

“I wrote my way out of hell
I wrote my way to revolution
I was louder than the crack in the bell
I wrote Eliza love letters until she fell
I wrote about The Constitution and defended it well

And in the face of ignorance and resistance
I wrote financial systems into existence
And when my prayers to God were met with indifference
I picked up a pen, I wrote my own deliverance.”

—Being heard. I sent two emails the other day to two different people and organizations. The reason for the email doesn’t matter. The who doesn’t matter either. I had helped both at different times and I was hoping the people involved would get back to me. Of course I heard crickets. Oh, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. I assume they had things come up. Saying all that, being heard still resonates enormously with me. Thank goodness for those who hear and see us.

Leaves blowing in the wind make me smile. They’re the best.

  1. Oof! The importance of being heard…even if the response is only recognition. Got it…heard you. Not necessarily a response to the question/query/request. I’m with you, Brian! 😉🥰😉

  2. Stepping away from the problem and coming back to it later is often a best way to solve those head-banging problems. And I hear you on people getting back to us – that often is the best form of recognition!

  3. I was waiting at the bus stop after work one day last week, very tired after the long day and unhappy to be standing there for what seemed an interminable amount of time. Then a breeze loosened a half-dozen or so maple seeds from the tree beside the stop, and they were sent whirling across the street… and suddenly, everything was better. Not perfect, but there was something beautiful in the world again, and I smiled.

Charlie Brown and Snoopy do the same for me. Thank you.

  4. All of these are good things to be grateful for Brian.
I can see why leaves blowing in the wind makes you smile. When a big wind blows leaves off trees around me, I like to pretend they’re having a confetti party just for me. 🤎🧡❤️

  5. For sure, thank goodness for all those who see and hear us, Brian. The Snoopy video was adorable, and I must now go dive into some leaves. (However, I always heed Linus’ warning about never diving into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker!)

  6. Interestingly, in the song Hurricane, Bob Dylan describes how Ruben “Hurricane” Carter faces the problems that come his way (racial profiling, wrongful murder conviction–deep stuff, man).

Lin Manuel-Miranda is a genius too.
