A$AP Rocky vs. A Good Night’s Sleep

I’m just going to say it: I don’t recover the way I used to.

I’m rounding up all the likely suspects for questioning. My age, health, and mindset all come to mind. All three of them have their issues. I just know that I’m not the best at recovering like I was when I was younger.

Let me set the stage. My son and his friends went to an A$AP Rocky concert a few weeks ago. Now, my rap music cred is lacking to say the least. I hear the name of the latest rapper and I inevitably go, “who” with a big question mark. Still though, I volunteered to drive the guys into the city and pick them up afterward.

I figured, how bad could it be? They could enjoy themselves without worrying about a designated driver or paying an exorbitant price for an Uber, and I would just keep myself busy outside the arena while the show went on. Sure, I knew the city traffic would be a total mess and we’d get home late, but I didn’t think much of it.

Boy, was I wrong.

It was 2:30 a.m. by the time I finally pulled the warm covers over my head and went to sleep. By no measure was it the longest night of my life — I’ve had plenty of others. I’ve done plenty of late-night pickups before. I’ve been an active guy all my life; I’ve run half marathons and marathons, and I’ve burned the candle at both ends at work. I’m used to late nights.

But I was absolutely shocked by how much that one late night completely knocked me off my feet. It took everything I had the next day to keep my eyelids open. Let’s just say I punctuated every conversation with at least two yawns and three “Boy!! Am I tired!” comments.

The fog actually stuck with me for two full days, until I was finally able to sneak in a short afternoon nap. I had to laugh at myself. I’m clearly not the spring chicken I used to be. Heck, I’m more like the lazy sloth lounging in the corner, who can barely keep its eyes open.

Oh well. Here’s to a good night of sleep and knowing your limits.

What throws you off your game these days?

  1. Love this! I’m right there with you. I haven’t been sleeping for a while now and I’m wiped! I keep saying that’s it I’m laying down after work. Wrong! I never do. I’m running on caffeine and prayers.

Hope you had the best Father’s Day my friend!

    1. Oh, I lay down, but then I turn into an idiot and spend my time scrolling my phone instead of taking a nap. Stupid, stupid, stupid move. Ha, ha. Running on caffeine, prayers, and positive thoughts. Oh, that’s definitely my life’s mantra. Ha, ha.

  2. Wait until your my age. You will fall asleep at the drop of a hat; in the middle of a TV series you enjoy and awake to the late night news thinking someone has broken into your house.

    1. Yes, yes, you said Beth. I would stay late at work, stay out late with friends and still get up early and be early to work. What the hell happened. Ugh. I’ll you what though . . . that nap I took, oh my goodness, did it feel amazing. Ha, ha.

  3. Fibromyalgia and age. I’ve made peace with four naps a day. Hey, I can function a bit in between! But I do miss the days when I could research something for hours and go to bed only when I just had to. Still thankful, still blessed. I hope your riders tipped you well!

    1. Tip? Oh, pleeeeeassse Joy. I did think about charging them an Uber fee. Ha, ha. I can’t make too much fun of them though. My son was extremely grateful. Not having to deal with Philly traffic. Getting to chill with his friends. He was especially grateful. And as far as your naps go . . . I say go with what works! Your readers sure do appreciate your efforts!!!

  4. You’re such a great dad, Brian! When I was 15, my uncle took my cousins and me to see the band Foo Fighters… I’m sure he was dead tired, but I thought he was the coolest ever for giving us that opportunity.

Hope you can catch up on your sleep, and hopefully no more late nights in the near future!

    1. My son and his friend are 21/22. They could’ve easily drove themselves. But I think they liked not having to deal with the traffic. And yes your uncle had to be cool to do that – Foo Fighters, very cool. It was a few weeks ago, so I think I’ve caught up, but it definitely takes me longer now. I’ve lost my resilience to things. Ha, ha.

    1. Good dad? I’m not sure about that. I would just rather my son have fun with his friends than have to pay an Uber fortune. Talk to me in a week and I’d probably say . . . forget about it, drive yourself. Ha, ha. My son was appreciative so I can’t really complain.

  5. Oh good golly, yes. Feeling the same…except for rap concert bit. I can become easily overwhelmed and sleep deprived (“off my feed” as my dad used to say) by one later than normal night. The fog? Yep. Fog! Perfect description. Functional but far from optimal! 😜💝😜

      1. I’m actually intrigued by that. I bet it would be a hoot. Can’t you see Lawrence going old school and stealing from Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady . . . “A-one, and a-two . . . Why be a king, when you can be a god.” Ha, ha, yes, I had to look that line up. I have no rap game at all. Don’t know any lyrics, but I bet Lawrence Welk would know them all. Ha, ha.

    1. We’re on the same page Mark! When I dropped off my son and his friends, I drove back to Center City and ended up on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. I drove right past the Art Museum and all 72 steps leading up to the East entrance. I considered parking and doing my Rocky thing, but it was getting late and I needed to get back in time. Se la vie. Maybe another time. Ha, ha. Yo, Adrian! I DID IT! By the way, if you followed the exact, zigzagging path of the Rocky training montage, you would run 30.61 miles. Who knew heavyweight boxers are marathoners. Ha, ha.

  6. Everything throws me off my game these days! We drove our daughter to a concert in LA with a girlfriend and decided to stay there (couldn’t drive back to Palm Springs…) We were dying during the two-hour drive home, plus the next few days. That was close to 10 years ago.

    1. Oh, I don’t feel so bad. Thank you. It’s not just me. Ha, ha. But I think you have a better excuse. I’ve always heard from my son who was stationed at 29 Palms for a while that LA to Palm Springs can be hit or miss. One time a breeze, the next time a death march. Ugh. We all need our sleep!!!!

  7. I must confess, the idea of the morning after nowadays is what puts me off the most… because I realised that 20 years ago might have been just a matter of the morning after but now it’s the entire week after I meedvto properly recover. So I hear you Brian, loud and clear!
Last weekend I went to a two nights concert without drinking and managing to be happily home by midnight🤓

  8. Old age and recovery times suck. I hear ya. It’s just not the same. So I’m glad your son and his friends are enjoying these concerts and outings while they are young. Good memories to be made and treasured for later days!
