The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, October 5-11.
What I’m grateful for:
—Fighting the Big C. October has many special celebrations and days. You’ve got Octoberfest. A German festival with roots in Munich, featuring beer, food, and traditional festivities. There’s even a Harry Potter Book Day where fans host parties and celebrations to mark the iconic book series. I’m thinking of another celebration closer to many of our hearts. International Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed annually throughout October to raise awareness about the disease, promote early detection, support those affected, and advocate for global research and care. Here’s to the woman (and men) in our lives fighting and overcoming this horrible disease. I’m grateful for their grit and determination and pray for their healing and good health!

—Celebration. Like the Kool and the Gang song goes “Celebrate good times, come on (Let’s celebrate).” Celebrate the successes of others. Yes, sometimes the green-eyed monster — jealousy and envy — can come out and get the best of us. We wonder about us. Why didn’t I win the award? What about the job I’ve been doing? But, like a teacher once lectured my class, when we celebrate others, good things happen to us too. God, Fate, Karma, whatever you want to call it, sees us being a good friend and brings good things our way too. And, it’s just a nice thing to do. At least, that’s my belief and I’m sticking to it. So get out there and celebrate!

—Turning into a pumpkin. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on Monday. Like in the U.S., the traditional meal usually includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. We have a few more weeks until Thanksgiving in the U.S., but I’m definitely ready for all of those things — especially the pumpkin pie. Maybe we could throw in some whipped cream too!

What gave me a smile?
Bobby McFerrin, Robin Williams and Bill Irwin. Not much else to say, but “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”

As a Canadian, you have my permission (not that you need it) to celebrate twice and have pumpkin pie in October and November!! 🎃🎃

Oh thank you Darlene. I can use that! I was at the grocery store a few minutes ago and there was a nice big pumpkin pie staring back at me. I had the strength to hold off … but I definitely need to get my fix!!! Ha ha! Happy Thanksgiving!

The next time you are there, tell yourself you have my permission and buy it. In fact buy a whole pie! xo

My exercise routine or lack of one may say different. But I’m simply going to say “Darlene said I could.” Ha ha, I might have to make a special trip back to the store!!! 🎃🎃🥧🥧🤣😎😎😎

That’s one of my go-to songs when things suck. Don’t worry, be happy… I just made a card saying that and sent it to my son recently. Life is crazy and sucky sometimes. But what can we do? Maybe celebrating with some pumpkin pie will make it feel better… 😂 🎃🥧 I like Darlene’s idea of 2 Thanksgivings, we can celebrate with our neighbors to the north. 😊🍁

Yes, one certainly needs the whipcream! 🙂
I am all for fighting the big C!! Hate how it has affected so many people. I had a scare of my own recently and so thankful it turned out the way it did, but really feel for the ones who don’t get good news and have to fight for their lives.
This song never fails to bring a smile to my face. Happy Saturday! Have a great weekend, Brian.

I have never in my life eaten pumpkin pie (and I was briefly holidaying in USA and Canada – but in winter not autumn) … curious … is it sweet or savory in flavor?

I’m horrible at describing taste but you really need to try it. It’s a sweet, creamy, and spicy taste with primary flavors being warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The pumpkin puree provides an earthy, slightly sweet flavor and a smooth, custard-like texture that is dense and rich. Throw-in whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top and it gives it an additional creamy taste. I’ve grown up with it so it reminds me of memories past and of home. 🎃🎃😊😊😊😊

“I’m horrible at describing taste” – what?! – I absolutely disagree – you went to great lengths to help me imagine it – whilst I can’t visualize your childhood memories, I can imagine the spices and texture – well done you!!

Ha ha, I hope so! You definitely need to try it. I tend to keep my coffee tastes pretty simple. However this time of year my wife likes to mix things up with a pumpkin spiced latte. She says that’s pumpkin pie in a cup. Ha ha!

OK! well I think we have spiced lattes at Starbucks in the shopping mall not far from my home – now that I know it has a similar flavor I will have to be brave and try it (we’ll just have to see whether they sell it now (it’s Spring here) because of Halloween etc or whether I’ll have to wait 6 months to give you feedback!) 😅

Bag of rocks. Oh I forgot about that. I remember worrying about that as a kid. Getting a bag of rocks. Ha, ha.

The bakery where we have always bought our pumpkin pie just closed, so I think this year we’re going to make a pumpkin cobbler. We used to alternate back and forth anyway, but haven’t had this in years. I look forward to pretty much ALL Thanksgiving food!

Pumpkin cobbler, hmm. I don’t know that I’ve had that. Need to try that this Thanksgiving! 🦃🥧🎃
