The Big Three: Fireworks

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, June 29 – July 5.

—Partying like it’s 1776. Who doesn’t love a great fireworks display.

—Crazy people just like me. I have a lot of different memories from Independence Day over the years. My one overriding memory though is relaxing with and spending time with family. Here’s to our family members close and far away. Let us be thankful for their love and support.

—Simple, but powerful ideas.

  • “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Abraham Lincoln
  • “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Thomas Jefferson
  • “I’d like to be remembered as a person who wanted to be free and wanted other people to be also free.” —Rosa Parks
  • “The essence of America, that which really unites us, is not ethnicity, or nationality or religion. It is an idea, and what an idea it is—that you can come from humble circumstances and do great things.” —Condoleezza Rice
  • “The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults.” Alexis de Tocqueville

T-shirt makers know a good laugh or two when they see it. Here’s a few of the funnier Independence Day T-shirts I found promoted on the web. They’re not always politically correct for our times, but as they say, “keep calm and grill on”:

–Too cool for British rule.

–The British blew a 13-colony lead.

–Spilling the tea since 1773.

Let freedom ring and the burgers sizzle!

–It’s only treason if you lose.

–Happy Treason Day.

–Let’s party like it’s 1776!

Happy Boom-erang Day!

  1. Happy 4th of July, Brian. Love your reflections and the Jefferson quote feels especially poignant these days! Fireworks are so special to enjoy together. We stayed at a hotel last night near the US border (Michigan) and so we got to hear the fireworks from our side of the world.

    1. Oh, I love the irony thinking of my favorite Canadian friends enjoying themselves because of the crazies on this side of the border. Hope it was a fun night for you. Here’s a funny story. Two or three years ago, Pennsylvania eased some of its laws around purchasing fireworks . . . Of course, last night, my quiet neighborhood sounded like a war zone. We had fireworks going off every few minutes from early evening until midnight. I didn’t need to travel anywhere. I had fireworks right outside my window. I wouldn’t want to be working in the local hospital . . . I’m sure more than a few crazies lost a finger or two, but hey anything for the Fourth of July. Ha, ha. Have a great weekend.

      1. Oh I can only imagine how hospitals must dread holidays that involve fireworks! It brings out the crazies but thankfully and hopefully, they are the minority.

  2. Love the quotes – most people haven’t taken the time to understand the hard work our Founding Fathers and Mothers had to maintain during the process of creating the Declaration of Independence a one-of-a-kind document. Hope you made great memories in your special T-shirt!
