Who’s got your back on Difficult Days?

There’s an often told A.A. Milne story about Winnie the Pooh having a tough day. Piglet asks if he wants to talk about it and Pooh says that he doesn’t think he does.

Piglet says that’s okay, but instead of walking away, he sits down next to his friend. Pooh’s not sure what’s going on so he asks Piglet what he’s doing.

“Nothing, really,” said Piglet. “Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don’t feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.

“But goodness,” continued Piglet, “Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you’ve got someone there for you. And I’ll always be here for you, Pooh.”

“And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs . . . he thought that his best friend had never been more right.”

In real life

I’ve read this story countless times over the years. It’s a children’s story. I’m a grown adult. The story still touches me every time I come across it. I saw it in action just this week. It was raining for the third consecutive day. I was grumpy. I wasn’t upset for any particular reason, I just wasn’t myself. Two friends must have read the tea leaves. They texted me out of the blue to say, “hey, just thinking of you.”

My mood changed instantly. I wasn’t happy-go-lucky, boy-isn’t-life-grand, but I felt a calm that had been missing. It makes me grateful for caring friends who help us when we’re down. I know I would be lost without folks like that in my life. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Thank goodness for good friends.

  1. How true is this? When a friend just lets you know they are they are there it is often the difference making a Difficult Day a not-so difficult one!

  2. It’s funny how we have little children stories that stay with us throughout our lives. Mine has always been the one about the sun and the north wind arguing about which one was stronger and settling it by seeing which one could get the coat off of a man passing by. (Nowadays it seems a lot of people have never heard of it. 🙄)

    1. I’ve heard the sun and north wind story, but I wouldn’t have been to pull it out of the recesses of my brain. Ha, ha. I would’ve needed some help with that one. But you’re so right, it’s amazing how this kid’s stories stay with us throughout our lives. Guess children really are the smart ones. 🤣🤣😎

  3. With you! Those simple messages, ‘thinking of you’ and the check-in texts. I love them and it takes no time to slow down and reach out. Pooh and Piglet know things, don’t they? 🥰

    1. I’m convinced that Milne and Piglet and Pooh are the real geniuses. We’re all just impersonators, but they really know what’s going on. They’re the smart ones. We get caught up in a million tasks. Pooh and Piglet know to slow down and enjoy life. 🤣🤣😎

  4. Love this story, Brian. Isn’t it amazing what children’s stories — and the right song can do for us? Kinda like the post, they restore the heart. Thanks, Brian!

  5. To paraphrase Joe Cocker, I get by with A LOT of help from my friends, Brian. 😊Truly. They lift me up and vice versa. I’m lucky. And oh man, I love Lean On Me SO much. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yes, I’m not sure how, but my friends had some good timing. And yes, the wisdom of Pooh. He’s one smart little bear. Funny how he spoke to me as a young child and still speaks to me as a grumpy old man. I’ve changed but he’s still the same. A wise bear. Ha, ha.

  6. I love Winnie the Pooh and Piglet too. Such a lovely post about friendship and about how a simple message or call from a friend can uplift one’s mood. I think people of all ages can learn and be inspired by the works of A.A.Milne. So simple, yet profound.

    1. Hope things get better Elizabeth. Hang in there. And yes, sometimes, we need to reach out. I hear you about Pooh and Piglet. I loved them as a kid, but they speak to me now so much more. The original stories might have been meant for kids, but they really do speak to everyday life. Hope you have a great weekend.

      1. I tripped and sprained my ankle on our belated mother’s day weekend out of town exploring Arizona. I’m bummed out. I called a friend to vent while hubby was buying me an ace bandage!

      2. Thanks! I was so looking forward to a long weekend in the mountains at a lake. It was supposed to be a hiking weekend. Now I’m doing RICE — resting, icing, compressing and elevating.

  8. Oh Brian, it’s always good to have your own personal Piglet! Thanks for reminding us of that all important comment to Pooh. All of your musical selections are timeless and a sign of the times! 🤗💖🥰🎶🐨

  9. The Pooh and Piglet meme pops up on my social media from time to time – sometimes remixed with hilarious profanity – but it reminds me every time of how much better life is when we have people who are there for us on our difficult days, indeed.

    1. Oh I think I need to be on your stream Ab. Yours sounds a bit more entertaining than mine. I imagine the memes have Piglet saying: “Snap the $%@*%& out of it Pooh.” or the two of them making fun of Tigger and calling his bouncing annoying. Ha, ha. Nah, let’s hope it doesn’t say that. You’re so right though life is better when we have people there for us. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend.

  10. Yes, thank goodness for true friends. Pooh’s messages are really for adults, and as adults read Pooh’s words and stories to their children they become ingrained. Thank goodness.
