I’ve had a few challenges in recent weeks. It’s been nothing earth-shattering, just the usual work and home highs and lows that we all face. For whatever reason, I was getting a little down in the dumps the other day. My breaking point came as I was looking over several bills that came in the mail.
I was annoyed that they seemed high. I wondered aloud why our bills always seem to go up and never seem to go down. In my mind, I was the proverbial little man raising his right hand in a fist to God above. “Why me? What have I done to deserve this?”
I was still grouchy when my phone dinged letting me know that I had a text message. I ignored it for twenty minutes or so but then it dinged again. I had two new texts. Our daughter had sent a text asking if we would be around to chat later in the evening. Of course, we could talk. I couldn’t wait. On top of it, our middle son had texted us with the date and time when he’ll be flying in for a visit. The two messages couldn’t have come at better times.
I’m not a Pollyanna or blindly optimistic. I tend to see the positives and the negatives. I still had to pay the bill. I still had chores to do. However, the text messages were a nice reminder that there’s goodness all around us. We just have to open our eyes.
Here’s a few other positives that jumped out at me:
- I was reminded by something that Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Saquan Barkley said in the weeks leading up to the team’s recent Super Bowl win: “You can’t be great without the greatness of others.”
- “Underneath my outside face, there’s a face that none can see. A little less smiley, a little less sure, but a whole lot more like me.” —Shel Silverstein.
- There are two teens in my neighborhood who regularly play basketball on the street. I was on the phone with my wife the other day and happened to watch the two of them play. One went up for a shot and fell hard on the macadam. It was heartening to see the other teen run up to him and help him up.

- I saw this sign posted above the cash register at a local diner. “The most wonderful places to be in the world are: in someone’s thoughts, in someone’s prayers, and in someone’s heart.”
- Listening to music that touches our soul. I write this as I sing “Desperado” along with Glenn Fry and Don Henley from the Eagles.
- Watching the the beautiful dark red Cardinal that keeps visiting our deck. I keep trying to get a shot of him like fellow blogger E.A. Wickham on Bleuwater and her beautiful shots of Red, but I’m just not quick enough.
- Putting down a good book, excited to see where it goes next.

- I skimmed through an old journal and saw that I had written down these two quotes:
- “Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness.” —Frank Tyger
- “The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer someone else up.” —Mark Twain.
- A sunny day.
- I opened a Bible I have in a desk drawer and came to this yellow highlighted text: “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” —Romans 12:12
And then finally how about this one:
—A friend joked that she was having a great day: “My two goals today were to get out of bed and to drink coffee. I’ve done both, I’m killing it.”
Oh, I’ll be fine. I’m like most people, I have my ups and downs. It’s still good to be reminded of life’s goodness.
Here’s to a better week.

my mantra or favorite quote or planned epitaph or thing that I live by is this: ‘go,’ it says it all for me. p.s. I am filled with joy to just wake up each day, even on a bad one, live is always a series of ebbs and flows. my old teaching partner told me I’m like a 3 year old because I love to wake up in the morning early because I’m just excited for the day.

That’s really cool Beth. “Go” – I love that. And hey, I think being compared to a three year old is pretty neat too. Ha. ha.

So much to love in this one post, Brian! I think you’re right. An outreach (or in your case two of them!) from our grown children means to much and pulls us back, squarely to what matters most. And your musical tastes and mine are so similar. There are days when Desperado makes me inexplicably happy and/or seriously melancholy. I can’t predict…but I love it either way. Here’s to a great week for you – sending big hugs! 🥰

Yes, hearing from my kids always makes me smile. And that’s so cool about our musical tastes Vicki. I love how you described Desperado. I can’t describe, sometimes it’s a melancholy song for me. Almost a wistfulness. Other times it’s like the happiness of coming to the end of a long journey. I never really know what it’s going to mean to me. I love Take it Easy and Seven Bridge Road, but Desperado just means something else to me. Yes, here’s to a great week for everyone!!! Thank you!

Love these musical moments that I have in common with you – for reasons neither of us understand! 🥰

This is a fantastic reminder that there is far more good than bad around us. Love your entire list, Brian. And I couldn’t help but giggle at your friend’s ‘great day’ requirements. Maybe some of us need to set the bar in a different place?

I’m not sure my friend knew that I needed a pick-me-up, but it worked. And you’re so right. Maybe we need to adjust the bar some days. Ha. ha. I’m just here for the coffee! Thanks so much for stopping by. Love the shared humor and wisdom.

We all get frustrated and sad along the way, I sure do. Why oh why do my bills also creep up and up be it ever so slowly… There has to be a stopping point. People can only afford so much, could this be a part of why Americans are not as happy as we used to be??

The sun is out today so I’m doing better. It’s the little things. Maybe I need to move to Las Vegas. I would get lots of sun then. Ha. ha.

The funny thing is that I thought it might be a bummer for a Monday morning Wynne. Ha. ha. Really are lots of good things all around us. Thank you for being there.

I was watching our backyard cardinals just this morning. We’ve named them Harry and Sally. They’re quite the loving pair, but yeah…pretty hard to get a good photo.

Does Harry wear a Mets cap and complain a lot? Does Sally pick out certain pieces of birdseed. I’m hoping I’ll get a few more chances to get some pictures later this summer. Ha. ha.

I love taking a moment for happiness – for choosing to be happy. Recently my 8 year old has come up to me here and there through the day asking me, “are you happy.” After a few of these I realized she was probably checking in on me because I was acting grouchy. So we talked a little about what makes us happy, and decided we have a lot to be happy about and that mostly our lives are happy, with little bits of mad/sad/frustrating mixed in.
Making a list is always nice, and reading yours was very sweet, too. I especially liked the cardinal sighting. They say cardinals are a symbol of remembrance, and can be someone you’ve lost visiting you in spirit. It always makes me smile from ear to ear when a cardinal stops to spend a few moments with me!

Aww, that’s such a cute story about your daughter. They keep us honest don’t they? Now she knows too that everyone has bits of frustration, but we still have lots to be happy about. I still need to remind myself of that one. Ha, ha. And I’ve heard that about cardinals. We were joking about who’s visiting us. 😎😎😎

You have great coping mechanisms, Brian, and resilience. It sounded like a bumpy rough while at work but you have the right approach and perspective. I’m glad that your kids were there for you at the right time. Hope the rest of the week can only go up from here!

This is a great post, and so important to look around, remember and be grateful! In my meditation yesterday it was on gratitude and in was amazing that in 5 minutes I felt better about everything! The warmth all over my body that came, from just remembering the good! 😊

Aww, thank you for the kind words. I have to get back into a meditation habit. I’m envious of your five minutes. My brain tends to wander and do its own thing, but it does relax me and I’m grateful for that. Thanks so much stopping by and I appreciate your comment.

That’s alright. Your stars make me laugh. They keep me honest, reminding me to not trust the WP numbers. Ha, ha. I’m kidding. I’m sorry that you keep having problems with my blog. I keep checking the WP help, but don’t see much there.

This might actually keep me in bed.. 😂 “I was reminded by something that Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Saquan Barkley said in the weeks leading up to the team’s recent Super Bowl win: “You can’t be great without the greatness of others.”
Every day and night there’s another game on..It’s like white noise around here..

Bravo, Brian! There are so many positives here, I’m smiling and nodding at each one. Last week I had a “Poetry Break” at school, where my class goes to other classrooms to spontaneously recite a poem. Of course it was Shel Silverstein.
