The Big Three: the price of eggs

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. This year, I’m making it a habit to list three blessings each week. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, February 23 – March 1:

—Food on our tables. The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted this week that egg prices will increase 41 % this year and that prices for all food will increase by 3.4%. The price of eggs has definitely gone up in recent years. And I doubt much of the increase has gone back to the farmers. And I’m not getting into how eggs have become a political football. Instead — while that’s all troubling, I’m still grateful for the food in our grocery store shelves and my home. I probably should take it easy on the eggs anyway. High cholesterol and all, you know. Hello Oatmeal! I may not like it much, but it’s still good for me.

—Be an original. A friend of mine sent me a text asking if I had a few minutes to chat. We had worked together three years ago and she had some dirt on a guy from another department who always carried himself with an arrogance that rubbed folks the wrong way. It turns out that contrary to what he presented, nobody has everything figured out.

Yes, he had many strengths, but he had some flaws too.

The news gave me some mixed reactions. It was good to see behind the curtain (even though it came in the form of gossip.) Strangely though, as I talked with my friend, I found myself focusing less on the gossip about the other guy and more on myself.

I was thankful that I was willing to accept my own vulnerabilities. I was grateful that I treated the rest of the team with respect and tried my best to keep the “office games” to a minimum. Instead of playing some fake role, I was myself. Looking back on our interactions, it hit me: When we stop running from our flaws, we find wisdom.

And the Oscar goes to . . .

The 97th Academy Awards will be given out Sunday night. Oh, I’ve seen few of the movies up for nomination. I saw Conclave and thought it was great. Ralph Fiennes was amazing, but I have no idea who will win.

I’ll still be watching. Why? I love seeing people rewarded for their work. I love seeing people at their best. I love the emotion and the rawness of it. Here’s what I mean. J.K. Simmons won the Best Supporting Actor in 2015 for Whiplash.

Simmons does all the normal things. He thanks his wife and kids. He throws in a joke or two and then he reminds everyone to . . . call your mom. I thought that was amazing!

  1. Oscar night is a b ig tradition for me, since I created the live nationwide arrivals pre-show way back in the day…I was also lucky to be invited to attend the award show itself multiple times…we will drink some champagne and eat Wolfgang Puck pizzas as that was our tradition when working the show!

    1. Oh this is neat John. When you mentioned it in one of your posts, I was kind of wondering how you celebrated. It had to be a blast dressing up, doing the red carpet, seeing it all come together. I’m really off this year. I feel like I haven’t seen a lot of the nominees, but still cool to see the event.

      1. I Executive Produced our live 10-hour arrivals show, which I was quoted saying “we turned entering a building into a major television event.” As the awards were about to begin, my wife and I would quickly change and run in for the show…it was a pretty fun time in our lives to be sure!

      2. Oh that’s awesome John. What a great memory. What a great time in your life. Wow! And that “entering a building thing” has really expanded from the Academy Awards to the rest of pop culture. I love how it’s commonplace now for ESPN and the other sports shows to show football/basketball players entering the arena to see what they’re wearing and what kind of exterior mindset they have. A direct correlation. Ha ha!

      3. I had dinner with the Executive Producer of the Super Bowl, and when I told him he said “so you’re the one! Now we have to do it – what do you talk about for ten hours?”

      4. When I watch them doing it today I have fond memories but am a bit bummed that E! has cut their coverage back to far fewer hours…they are slowly going away as all cable networks are…thanks for the note!

    1. It was funny to hear from my friend. On one hand I was making fun of myself about getting excited over a bit of gossip … but it was also eye opening to see that playing things straight was actually a good thing. Wish I always had that clear vision. Ha ha 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    1. I stumble across a good quote every once in a while. Ha ha. Nah, it took looking back for it to hit me that trying to be something I wasn’t was not a smart thing to do. I’m just grateful things worked out. Thanks for your feedback Joy!!!!!!

    1. It’s been awhile since we’ve been to the movies. For some reason I still like the award shows. I might not watch it all … but I still like to tune in for some. I wouldn’t call myself a Hollywood fan or anything, I just think it’s cool to hear about the creation process and who they thank. Strange I know. Ha ha 🤣 🤣🤣🤣😎😎

      1. Not strange at all.
I hear you on the movies.
The last movie I went to was Wicked. I left 3/4 way through. I prob should have seen it on Broadway first, I told myself. There was soooo much hype but I just couldn’t get into it.

  2. great picks for this week and it proves that we are all fragile just like those eggs. all we can do is be ourselves and hope we don’t get cracked. it pays to be a good egg.

  3. I have seen zero Oscar-nominated movies, and thus, have that same number of interest in watching this year’s ceremony. But I used to be a bigger fan back when I actually knew most of the films…especially when Billy Crystal was the host.
