I tried to shake the rust out of my tired arms and legs. I thought I looked like a graceful young ballerina stretching her legs or maybe a boxer hitting each of his arms and mentally preparing himself for a fight. In reality, I looked like an wounded duck, one wing working, one flapping in distress, flailing to the ground.
I wondered how I had gotten to this point. My heart told me that I needed my head examined. Like now. Like right away. My head scolded me for getting up before the crack of dawn to go for a walk. It told me that the late nighttime and early morning hours should be left sacred for good, old, amazing sleep.

A slow process
Yes, I’m trying to include more exercise into my day and my body parts are all rebelling. They’re striking back calling me horrible, mean names. Yes, yes, it’s a New Year’s resolution, but I thought I would be ambitious and start early. Since I’ve started this sadistic routine, my back has been complaining non-stop. It has a strong opinion on the subject and leaves nothing to the imagination. “What the &@!$#! do you think you’re doing Brian.”
My feet and arms are complaining too. They’ve taken a more traditional approach. They threaten to take me to court and sue me for abuse and dereliction of duty. They claim to have a world-class lawyer representing them. They say things can end “nice-like,” if I just go back to bed and promise to stop this madness.
Some good, some bad
My mini workout plan has experienced a mixture of success. Some days, I’ve been up and out of bed before 5. Other days have been a swing and miss, with me hitting the snooze button an alarmingly number of times.
Despite the misgivings, I find that most days my attempts at discipline and exercise have been rewarded in some way. For example, take this past Sunday. I got up and got dressed. When I went outside in the cold morning, I woke to find that my car tire was flat.

Okay, that was a bummer and I was not amused. I raised a fist in the area as if to say, “why now God.” I worried about having to change the tire or put on a spare with temperatures in the low 20s. But I put it out of my mind and started my walk.
A few minutes later, I was rewarded with a beautiful, morning sunshine. The sunrise was not the best sun rise I’ve ever experienced. In fact, it was pretty tame as sunrises go. But the cold, stillness reminded me that life happens all around us. We can take notice and enjoy it or ignore it altogether, but it’s our choice.
I, for one, am going to enjoy it.

Nice post Brian! I like the length. And good on you. I have never once taken a walk before sunrise, especially in winter.

Yes, way too early, but you know how it is in the Northeast. I figured if I didn’t go when I have the momentum, I might just end up skipping it. And it’s not like we’ve gotten a ton of sun lately. Feels overcast all the time. Ha, ha. We’ll see how long I keep this up. ONe crazy cold, cold spell and I’ll be whimping out in no time. I definitely need to move to a warmer climate!!!!

Yikes, that really is damned early to get up to exercise, Brian. I’m impressed! 🏃🏼♀️

The early bird gets the worm, right Jane? No, it’s too early, but I’m just trying to strike while the motivation is there. Ha, ha.

So I hear, but there always seem to be enough worms to go around, early or otherwise!! 🤣😊

Now that I am in New York with my wife, she heads into the TV studio at 6:30a. I have coffee, then cross the street and do a 4-5 mile walk through Central Park….good exercise for the mind and body, and by the time I get home the west coast isn’t even at work yet! I try to walk 70 miles a week and it’s possible given the early start!

Similar mindsets. I’m trying to trick my brain by getting it out of the way. By the time I’m done it’s still relatively early for meetings with people on both east and west coasts. Five is still too damned early . . . but I’m getting there. One step at a time.

I’m motivated by my wife getting up at 5:30a and I have coffee with her!

good call, even though your army of body parts rebel, they’ll fall in line at some point. and it’s new year’s o’clock somewhere, so right on time

They really are rebelling. What the heck are you doing Brian. Ha, ha, gotta love shaking things up once in a while.

Hilarious…and relatable! Thanks for the chuckles, especially this: …”body parts are all rebelling. They’re striking back.” Paul and I just had that conversation…”What parts are talking back to you this morning?” Comparing notes, LOL. 🤣🤣🤣

I think my body is planning a coup against me. Ha, ha. They’re trying to overthrow the govt. I think I have them pushed back but we’ll see. Ha, ha.

Still laughing…yes! I’m still laughing. Your post was fab and your comments? They deliver, too! You have a knack for comedy, my friend! 🥰

I love this – thanks for taking us along for the walk. I hear you about the rebellion — and also enjoying it. Sooo good!

I brought everyone along for the ride so that I have proof when my body sues me or decides to take things out on me. Ooops, I can’t work today. My body is getting back at me. Ha, ha.

I’m impressed. I go on the early morning walks in the summer when I avoid the heat. Now that it’s winter and colder, I stay in bed and walk a few hours later.

Oh, don’t tell me that EA. I keep telling myself that I have to get up early because everyone else is doing it. Ha, ha.

I don’t do cold, and you have real cold.

It’s never a bad thing to get up and move – as long as you listen to your body (no, not the part that is whining about doing anything, the parts that hurt – for real, and not just because they forgot how to be used!)
Also, be nice to yourself. It won’t be perfect and there will be those days where we really have to convince ourselves to do it – by the way, we NEVER regret when we do; not quite the same when we don’t!

Nice to myself. Hmmm, sleeping in tomorrow sounds like a really great idea. Ha, ha

Ugh, it’s killing me Cheryl! It’s one thing to be up early. I get that. I’ve done that enough in my life. It’s the working out … that’s killing me! Ha ha. I’m hanging in there, looking forward to having family nearby soon, hope the same for you. 😎😎😎

I feel your pain. I have been getting up at 5 a.m. for almost 10 years now…and I swear, not a day has gone by where I haven’t wished I could just sleep in. Fortunately, I am a Taurus, and egro, stubborn to a fault. (I’m always happy later on that I sacrificed sleep for exercise, so it all works out in the end.)

It’s a killer there’s no question about that. Ha ha !!!!

Good for you, Brian, but I’m not keen on the tire problem.

Yea, of course, I ran over a nail and it was too close to the sidewall to repair. Not what I wanted, but at least we weren’t out and about when it happened. 😎😎😎

Yeah Brian, but somehow, I beg to differ. 😝 The pain is very real! UGH! 🤣😁😂 And I still can’t see where I’ve gained! SMH 😲

So funny, Brian, and your body parts will stop throwing a tantrum someday soon. That is pretty early, but you have to fit in exercise around your work and family time. When the kids were younger, I used to go to the gym at 4:30 am. It didn’t last long because it was way too early and because it was way too creepy with the big windows and darkness lurking outside. 😳 Anyway, good luck, and don’t take any backtalk from your body. You’re doing it good in the long run! No pun intended! 😂😂

Yea, it’s always strange being in a large gym late at night or early in the morning with few other people. It’s always a strange experience! Just gotta keep forcing myself!

I often want to lie in my bed and sleep on, but no matter what, I am up early and scurrying about starting my day, haha! Although getting out of bed has slowly started to become a bit of a guessing game of ‘which part of me is going to ache today’!

I’m familiar with that game. Will my back hurt today or not? Ha ha! Love it!

Hooray for you, Brian.. “They’re striking back calling me horrible, mean names”. You gotta know I love this.. if you didn’t do it there would be worse names.. lol
Just remember you can’t outrun your food during the holiday! ❣️

Oh please say it isn’t so Cindy … I thought for sure a few more miles today would outrun that piece of cake I had last night. No? Ugh!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😎😎
