Nine lessons from my 9th Anniversary

I celebrate my 9th Anniversary on WordPress this week. Anytime you do something for that many years you learn a thing or two.

Here’s a few of the things I’ve learned about writing a blog:

—Put it out there. It’s better to let others in than to hold back your feelings. I’ve written on everything from super sensitive topics that have brought out my own tears to other topics full of whimsy and humor. I’ve been surprised countless times with what I’ve thought would and would not touch readers. You never know.

—Grammar and punctuation matter, but what matters more is intent. You should always try to make it easier for the reader. However, if someone is going to be turned off by a misplaced comma or an incorrect word choice, than so be it — we wouldn’t have been a good match anyway. They wouldn’t have enjoyed my humor, style of writing, or spin on things.

—Speaking of grammar, “effect” is what happens, “affect” is how it happens. Effect is more often than not the noun, and affect is the verb. Forget about a career in Journalism or Corporate Communications. It took writing a blog for me to figure this one out. Thank you WordPress.

—Be kind to others and to yourself.

—You have something unique to say. Trust your gut, it’s there, let it come out. I wrote early in my experience that someone influential in my life called my blog silly. Even though they once encouraged my writing, they didn’t understand why I needed the blog as an outlet. Years ago, that would’ve crushed me. I’ve since let them go from my life and I’m better for it.

—Be authentic. Be true to who you are. People respond to honesty and integrity. They get turned off by hypocrisy and actions that don’t mesh with everything else they’re seeing. Be you.

—Get it down on paper. You can always edit later. In the words of Author Jodi Piccoult, “You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”

—Create a daily writing habit and write ahead, as much as you can, so that you can edit and make changes and not get caught up in the emotions and trying to publish in the here and now. I’m always amazed how an idea starts out one way and after some editing and polish, it becomes something shiny and wonderful.

—Write what your heart calls you to write. When asked this same question about what to write, Author Joan Didion wrote, “I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means.” Oh, I write for my readers, but there’s a part of me that’s eyes-wide-open, learning for the first time what I believe in too.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for joining me on this journey.

  1. Nine years! That’s awesome. 👏🏼

I think “Making Up My Own Rules” is my favorite one you listed. Also, I somehow didn’t see that one when you first posted, so it was still “new to me”.

I’m also a big fan of ellipses and the em dash – definitely two of my favorites…

  2. Brian, you have delivered some very valid and valuable points about your writing journey. Happy Number 9! 🥳👍🏼🍾 When I first began my website and blog, and I administered many, I stumbled on such lessons because I made a huge error to try to follow the writing style and boring voice of alleged successful writers. But being authentic and civil, while offering some entertaining and teachable moments is spot on my friend. 🙆🏻‍♀️💖🥂

  3. 9 years – wuhoo!! 9 years of such incredible writing and grounded goodness. Thank you for all you’ve contributed, Brian!

But the voting thing wasn’t fair. Just picking ONE was hard!!

    Love you, Brian!!

  4. Well said and congrats.

Thanks for explaining effect/affect (really I screw them up all the time). Took years to get then/than correct (sometimes). Baltimore public school education only goes so far. When I told my daughter I was going to write a blog, both her and her friend burst out in laughter. I got that last laugh.

To the next 9. All the best.

  5. Happy Anniversary Brian. I loved your insights, and had a giggle at the affect/effect as I’m constantly correcting my students for mixing these two up. 😁🥳🍾🥂

  6. Congratulations on your 9th year anniversary m, Brian!! The try to write early and edit ✍️ is my goal every time I’m thrashing my pen in the nil of time and then hitting edit save 4-6 times later! 😑this hear maybe …NOT but maybe next but it’s important 🩷

  8. Happy 9th blogoversary! Our blogs are the same age, but it’s only now that I stumbled upon you, isn’t that funny? Glad I did, though. I can’t vote on your blogs yet, because this is my 1st time here, but I clicked 4 of them open purely based on the titles and will read them next!

Oh, and I agree with your advice: Be your authentic own self, be kind (I can’t believe someone called blogging silly!), and make your posts easy to read. I notice I’m more and more drawn to blogs that are carefully curated.

Cheers, hope you had some cake to celebrate!

    1. WordPress is funny like that. Some times I can’t even find my own blog. Ha, ha. And yes, sadly the “silly” comment came from someone who was close with me at the time. I’ve moved on from them. It’s their issue. I’m better for it. I’m not sure about how well I do curating my blog. I try to tell a story, be reasonably concise and to the point, and think about the reader’s interests. It’s been fun. As long as it continues, I suspect I’ll keep at it. Thanks for stopping by. Congratulations on 9 years as well. I’ll check yours out!!!
