Falling for Plan B

My wife has to think that I’m crazy. Last Friday, all I talked about was getting up early the next day and working in our yard. I had big plans to mow the yard and trim some bushes. I even made plans to clean out and rearrange our garage.

I was going to get up early  even earlier than that damn early bird and its worm that we hear so much about  put my nose to the grindstone, and scratch off everything that I had on my list. I was a man on a mission.

Of course, I woke up early the next morning and felt like doing everything, but work in the yard. I figured I’d let some time pass. Maybe I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed and would feel better in a few hours? When the morning dew wore off, I thought I’d feel more up to the work. If only that were true.

What did I feel like doing instead? I resorted to Plan B. I positioned myself next to my wife and our dog on our couch and we binged Netflix. We caught up on all the shows we’ve been meaning to watch, but have been putting off. Later, we went out and grabbed coffee and before settling in for more Netflix.

Yes, I made my choice. I passed up on the yard work and spent the day hanging out with my wife.

Oh, I could have been more productive. The achiever side of my brain would have liked to have been more organized and completed even something small. In fact, more than a few times, I had to tell the “achiever in me” and his annoying bell that he rings when I haven’t finished anything in a while, to shut the heck up. The lazy day at home, though, was exactly what the doctor ordered.

We need mental breaks sometimes too: Mine came with a Netflix logo. How often do you need a chill day? How do you spend them?

  1. bravo! that’s a challenge and you won the battle with yourself. so good to just relax together. I go on long walks in the woods or read or cook something or watch something, any combo that feels right

    1. The achiever in me fights that sometimes. It’s just a natural reaction I have that I have to be busy and making progress. When it starts going off in my head, I have to remind myself that I’m being productive doing nothing. Kind of crazy, but it works for me!!!! Ha, ha.

  2. I’m so glad that you took a break and did something fun with your wife. I think I spend almost too much time searching for something to watch than actually watching it! 🙏💕😊

  3. Sometimes we need to just listen to our bodies and take it easy. I do the same–read, watch a show, or just sit outside and watch the wildlife. Not bad ways to spend a day!

  4. LMAO 🤣😆😂 Brian, you got up before the early bird? 🐓 Mistake number 1. 😱 THEN Mr. Overachiever, you really thought you were going to get all of this stuff done, the yard and organizing the garage? I’m still organizing the garage and it’s been 10 years now! 😜 Overachieving is soooooo overrated. You made a good and wise choice with the binge watching my friend! 😁📺🍺

  5. I’ll echo what others have said…yay for you! Productivity is overrated, I say. Time spent on the sofa invariably gooses my task completion later on. I can’t predict when it will kick in, but I say indulge. Enjoy! 🥰

  6. I totally agree with you about the need for mental breaks. I think it’s essential to listen to our bodies and minds when they tell us to take it easy. As for me, I usually take a chill day once a week, and I like to spend it doing things that help me recharge, like reading a good book, going for a leisurely walk, or just catching up on some favorite TV shows. It’s important to prioritize self-care and relaxation to maintain a healthy balance.

  7. Now that’s a great plan B!!! chill days are always welcome and needed. Most Friday Nights and Saturdays are my I do what I want and limited schedule. Or if it’s a busy weekend weekend then Monday is my day of silence.
