I pulled up to a stop sign in my neighborhood a few weeks ago and noticed a teenager walking on the sidewalk. The boy looked sad. He had his head down and looked like he wanted to be somewhere else. I only happened to notice the boy because the local high school was letting out and saw a line of kids, in small little groups like a line of ants, leaving the school and making their way through the neighborhood.
The boy wasn’t the only one. Other kids seemed distracted too. It could have been the hot sun bearing down, the time of day, the thought of final exams, or a million other reasons.
On Wednesday, I thought back to that boy. I happened to be in my car about the same time of day, but this time I didn’t see one sad face. The melancholy faces were replaced by smile after smile. It was the last day of school and the start of summer vacation.

Do you remember the last day of school feeling? Especially as an elementary kid? Three months of freedom. There are some feelings that are palpable, a feeling so strong it feels like it can be physically touched, the last day of school feeling is certainly one of them.
As a kid, I loved everything about the final week. Cleaning out our desk or lockers. Running home carrying a load of papers and projects that our teachers had given back. Teachers wanting to be done just as badly as we did. Mapping out all the things I wanted to do in the summer. Getting excited about sleeping-in (even though my mother had other things planned for my time.) Handing in the books we had been lugging around all year and being glad that I would never have to see them again.
The thing I remember and miss the most: the glee and the feeling of lightness when you walked out of the school building. I’m free, I’m free, I’m really free!
We adults need a summer vacation too! Who’s with me? A return to the lightness of being a kid.

Yes, I can remember that feeling of lightness and feeling free on last day of school for a long school break. I hated being at my comprehensive school because of the bullying. So I was glad to get away.

Oh, sorry to hear about the bullying. That had to be tough. I’m sure it made the last day even more important!

It’s a joyful time for older children. My little ones are the opposite, feeling unsettled and wanting to cling to me. They want to stay in preschool forever.

Oh, that’s so cute Jennie. Yes, I do kind of remember that unsettling fear. “Wait a minute, I just got used to things, now we need to change things up, that’s not right!!!!!” Oh hang in there! I’m sure that’s hard too for you. 😎😎😎😎🎉

I still harbor a lingering regret for not having confronted the teachers in high school who doubted my potential. In hindsight, however, my subsequent achievements, which far surpassed any of theirs, rendered such confrontation superfluous.

Oh, I had a teacher or two who I would love to say “look at me know.” Fortunately most of mine were at least encouraging. Horrible though that you had to deal with that doubt.

Oh yes! The last day of school came with a great sense of freedom for me. And I celebrated it just as much when my kids had their last days of school each year. As a prof I still get that feeling, though it is slightly less buoyant.

Oh that’s so interesting to hear Alegria. I always wondered what was going through my teachers and profs minds. Good to know they had that same feeling as me! Ha ha! 🤣 😎😎

Lightness!!! Just an easiness and feeling of joy. Nothing could bring me down. Oh I’m sure I complained about boredom the first few hours of being home but the last day was still the best. 🎓✏️🚌😎😎😎

So true! I can’t open the videos, but remember blasting Alice Cooper’s “Schools Out for Summer” on the bus ride home. Best last-day song ever.

Three months!! We only got two!
The Black-Eyed Peas is the perfect representation of that freedom we all felt.

Oh, I would always count the actual days off. Some years it was more, some years less. Where I grew up in northeast US, we would always go until the 1st or 2nd week of June (depending on how much snow we got in the winter and how many snow days we had) and then go back after Labor Day which is the first Monday in September. We might have had more time off, but it sounds like you had a cool ball/dance instead of a boring graduation ceremony!!!🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎😎

Haha! Too funny.
I remember when we started the Tuesday after Labour Day. We always went to the day before our June 24th holiday. Ugh. Now, they start the Wednesday before Labour Day so it’s only a three-day week. Of course, they account for snow days and ped (pedagogical) days and if there are too many snow days, there are less ped days. All works out in the wash.
The graduation ball/dance was only at the end of Secondary Five (Grade 11). None of this ridiculous grad ceremonies at the end of pre-k, K, Grade 6, etc.

I remember that wonderful feeling of freedom … and then a week later, we’re all playing “school.”

Oh yea, I complained of being bored within hours of being home but that was okay. No school work to do! Ha ha ha! 😎😎😎😎

We want it both ways – no school, or school without the work. But you’re right about the boredom – or we wouldn’t be playing school.

Oh, Brian, I love this line, “There are some feelings that are palpable, a feeling so strong it feels like it can be physically touched, the last day of school feeling is certainly one of them.”
Yes! And I love how you walk us through that whole last week. We still have two weeks of school left here but I’m with you. Let’s all take a break!

It’s funny. I don’t think I’ve ever used the word “palpable” in my life, but it just felt right in this situation. Such a great feeling. Sorry you guys still have a few weeks. Fortunately, few snow days this year, so the kids got out a few days earlier than expected!!! 🚌🚌😎😎😎😎

Timely Brian… and that is exactly why I was babysitting last night cuz it was the last day of school for my Daughter’s 8th grade class and she remembered oh too well and left her mama with the baby … that would be muah! lol. She set it up ahead of time and just wanted to feel “normal” again. When she didn’t respond to the umpteen photo I sent her (which she usually LOVES), I called to make sure she was ok. She answered thank goodness, so I didn’t have to call the police on her .. lol…
She was more than ok and this song says it all.. Last night was a good good night.. she owes me. 😉😂💕

I miss summer vacations. They seemed to last so long as a child but seem to fly as an adult. That last week and day of school is indeed a magical and special time.

Yea, why is that Ab. Why were the summers longer as kids but they fly as adults? It’s gotta be some kind of time/age/space dynamic happening? Ha ha! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😎😎
