My parents were strict with my two brothers and me growing up. My mother had a way of simply looking at you that sent shivers down your spine. You never wanted to disappoint her.
She tended to keep her rules short and to the point. We were taught to be kind, respectful and helpful to others. Since they were older, my brothers knew they had to look out for me, their baby brother, and I had to look out for them. Simple stuff, right?

Actions have consequences
My mother also taught us, that “if you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.” Now she used different phrasing. She was definitely more comfortable stealing from the Bible, specifically Galatians, lecturing us that “you reap what you sow.”
I was young, but I still got the gist of the message. Play games and we would have to live with the outcome. If I was disrespectful to my brother or teased or poked him too much, when he reached his breaking point and retaliated, well, she just may decide to look the other way, letting him “beat the stuffing” out of me.
She would eventually step in, but not until I learned my lesson.
Thanks Mom … I think!
Live by the sword, die by the sword
With those two ideas fresh in my head, I’ve noticed a stead stream of “stupid news” lately:
—During a recent appearance on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers recklessly claimed that late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel had a connection to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. McAfee giggled and spurred the conversation along, giving no thought to the damage the two might be causing. Of course, Kimmel denied the allegations the next day and threatened legal action against Rodgers.
“Your reckless words put my family in danger,” Kimmel said. “Keep it up and we will debate the facts further in court.”
Star quarterbacks tend to get a free pass in life, but life has a way of catching up to you. Pick your cliche — dance with the devil, and you’ll get burned; when you play with fire, you get burned; or a dozen of others — but they all seem to apply to Rodgers. Play silly games, defame someone, and get the appropriate reward.

—It’s not just sports. The headline jumped out at me “She rioted on January 6. Now she’s headed to prison.”
My reaction, yea, that’s what happens when you’re videotaped breaking into the United States Capitol. You’re given a five year sentence. Sounds about right.
If you’ve got a problem with the election, take to the street, no problem. Protest on the corner, knock yourself out. Break a window, rush the Capitol police former, um, that’s a no-no. Most kids would considered that a no-brainer!
In the short snip-it that I saw, the woman sounded disappointed in herself. Good for her for seeing the error of her ways, but that’s what happens when you break the law. It’s hard for me to feel sorry for her. Go away, do your punishment, and I’ll wish you well in five years time.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
—Oh there are other things too. I was driving to Washington, DC before Christmas. The traffic was busy, but generally moving at a good pace. Unfortunately, the driver in front of me in a dark blue BMW wanted to drive faster. I pulled back a bit on the gas because he looked to be too close to the car in front of him and wanted to give myself time to respond in case something happened.
I need not to have worried. The guy quickly zig zagged through traffic and was soon out of eyesight. I forgot all about him until I saw the lights of two police cars and “my BMW friend” along the side of the road.
Karma at its best. Play with fire, you get burned.

What’s the saying? If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. There is something satisfying about someone experiencing repercussions for bad behavior, especially a reckless driver being pulled over of flashed by a speeding camera.

Yes, yes, yes, Erin! Very satisfying. Ha ha 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Gosh yes…that Aaron Rodgers/Jimmy Kimmel nonsense was a shocker. Karma…yes, yes…stupid games, stupid “prizes”. I think that’s what was waiting for the reckless driver when he was pulled over. A suitable “prize”, LOL! 😉

Do you ever have a post where you say what you want to say but still feel like you didn’t nail it. This is one of those. Rodgers in my opinion is a mess. My bigger issue is Mcafee, he’s a former NFL player, but in this case he’s in the announcer and has obviously never taken Comms 101, failing to realize how much stupid liability and risk he’s placed on ESPN. No, he cant control what comes out of rodgers’ mouth but he’s the one who brought him on and failed to step in and ask for proof. This is probably why I don’t write about politics. I want to, but can’t say it right.

I’m totally with you. Paul’s a longtime Packers fan, so we’re a Green Bay loving house around here…going way back…but this latest antic with Rodgers is even drawing ire from the stalwart fan. I don’t get it…and you’re right. It’s not the first time McAfee’s been super stupid, and I hadn’t thought about your point about his lack of comms experience. Negligent, negligent — but aren’t there smart people around folks like him to curb and protect them…from themselves??? Oy! And I thought you wrote it perfectly. I get you! 😜

Very true, Brian. Though in recent years I’ve wondered if this rule is suspended during US election time. It seems news media can say anything about any of the candidates without accountability. 😉

Ha ha, I think I might be the opposite of you Christine. I want them to point out the blatant lies, especially when so many politicians on both sides play fast and loose with the truth. Plus, so often their lies are so simple — they can be so easily checked. Ha ha.

I also experienced the karma of seeing a speeding ticket being issued for someone who had just gotten done racing up to and then past me…far exceeding the posted limit. I tend to rely on karma being visited upon someone who crosses paths with me in a negative manner at any time. I assume they will get their “due” down the road…whether on the road or not.🙂

“You reap what you sow”, was I favorite of my grandmother’s, too. I am always amazed when people face the consequences for their actions with indignation. As though they were exempt from the rules the rest of us follow. Liked⭐️

I am very careful NOT to wish the eejit ill when he drives in such a manner – that whole karma thing on my part. I might have trouble withholding a smile when they get stopped down the road, though.
Good on your mother to turn a blind eye while your brothers settled things (of course, within a reasonable amount!)
Throw it out there, it will come back. Might as well throw the good stuff, I say!

I think that no one is taught anymore that instant gratification can have long-term consequences. There is a large sense of entitlement in our society and it is growing larger every moment.
I quite like the idea of Karma, but lately, with some unfortunate events in my life, I’ve started to wonder if they are the result of some Karma I am due? And of course, I wonder why…

The Aaron Rodgers debacle was beyond stupid, but it’s not surprising, coming from him. He has a reputation as the man you love to hate.

So well said Belinda! I’d love to know what he thought would happen … that Kimmel’s name would just magically appear. Or that people would just take his word because he’s a great quarterback. As a friend used to say, “I don’t have a dog in this fight.” I’m ambivalent towards Rodgers and even Kimmel … but I was just astonished by the level of Rodgers’ arrogance. Wow!

Thanks for the laughs Brian. You also made me think of “what goes around comes around” – definitely karma 🙂
As an older sister, always resenting the “you’re the oldest, you should know better” and always getting into trouble for the actions of my younger brother and sister, I’d say don’t be too hard on your big brother(s)
I have to say my baby brother and I now have the best relationship and we’re much much closer than we were as kids

I feel as if we’re on the same wave length Brian, I recently did a post on putting the sword down, and “playing nice,” so to speak. You give some great examples of karma which is often exactly what we deserve. Life has a way of rewarding us in like, whatever we put out there, it comes back around. I prefer to enjoy nice encounters, a helping hand when I need it, and an open parking spot right in front of the store! Great post, hugs, C

I’m never sure what to call it, faith in God, karma, just being a good person … but I agree with you. I try to put out good things because I do believe it comes back around. I’m m always amazed though by my BMW friend who could care less about that approach. I like to think it gets them in the end. Who knows. Ha ha

Oh my gosh Brian, I had to laugh at your mother’s wise words, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” 😜 Your BMW friend reminds me of a similar situation years ago, when I was driving home from work but the low temps created a very icy, dangerous situation due to the wet roads. It was a Porsche and I was driving a Cougar. The conditions were so hazardous until I crept along on the interstate with my foot off of the gas, but oh this joker zoomed by me and other drivers. I too saw him disappear down the highway.
But when I approached a bridge and got on it, I began to slide and my car faced oncoming traffic. Fortunately there was a Fireman on the bridge (a badass female actually) who turned my car around by herself, and pushed my car so that I could creep ahead off of the bridge. Then, guess what? In the median I finally saw my friend in the Porsche piled on top of other cars in the median too. Yep, good old karma. Play stupid games and you wind up finding your ass in a big ole ditch! 😜😱🤣

Love your story Kym. Love it. If I’ve said once, I’ve said it a thousand times — I don’t mind the snow and ice conditions, we’ll get there, it’s the other drivers I worry about! Here’s a related story. I’m not a big hunter. I grew up with it, but that’s it. However, when my son was 13, he wanted to go. The things we do for our children. We had to go to a hunters safety class. It went over the basics and some common sense things. At the end of the class, when my son saw the grades some of the other prospective hunters were getting on the quiz they gave — my son asked me, “dad, are all these people going to be in the woods too.” I shook my head yes. His response, “maybe we should rethink this.” People are crazy! Ha ha! Thank goodness for your badass firefighter friend!!!! Love that

You mom encapsulated it so well. Actions have consequences and you’ve highlighted a few where it seems easy to see the actions were stupid games.

Your mom was right, of course. Thank goodness you can see her message play out when something wrong or bad happens. I have always wanted to see a reckless car that passed me pulled over by the police. You got that ‘prize’.

I saw the Rodgers/Kimmel last week and thought the same thing too. It’s a wonderful moment to see him learn that while there is freedom of speech, there are also consequences for free speech. Loved the way Kimmel roasted him.

Consequences! Yes, yes, yes. Sports figures seem to have a lot of issues with this. They have a right to say whatever they want and their fame goes a long way … but often they forget there are real consequences. Kind of crazy!

I found myself nodding and agreeing while reading your words, Brian. There are consequences, and there should be for everyone – status in life should be irrelevant. But I think some people feel that they’re invincible or exempt. I don’t understand that way of thinking. Great post! 🤗

I love it when justice is served! Something similar happened to me on the way home from work a few months ago. Driver was impatient as hell, went around me, ran a red light. With a cop right behind him.
Believe you me, he reaped what he sowed that day.

I get upset when drivers like that are right on top of cars in front of them and when it’s rush hour and there’s nowhere else to go. Just rude! Yes, you reap what you sow. Ha ha

Best post Brian.. Loved every minute and then the clincher:
“I need not to have worried. The guy quickly zig zagged through traffic and was soon out of eyesight. I forgot all about him until I saw the lights of two police cars and “my BMW friend” along the side of the road.
All I can say is YES!
Karma justice. Love it!
