December’s long crawl

The minute-hand on the clock ticks off slower in December. I have never tested it, but trust me, I know this to be a fact. You think I’m kidding? Ask any kid and they’ll tell you. They’re experts at time and they know: December is the slowest month of the year.

December is slower than the slowest turtle. It’s like walking in quicksand with a 50 weight tied to your hip or climbing a steady uphill in swimming fins or flippers. It’s slower than watching paint dry, hair grow, or a politician enjoying the sound of their own voice giving a rambling hours-long speech. It’s painstakingly slow.

Bring it on

You call my bluff? You say May or June when school ends are slower months. Oh you silly goose. Ha, ha, insert evil laugh here. Yes, time seems to stand still during those months, but it’s just one day, the final day of school. In contrast, December has a gauntlet of triplets.

First, December takes its sweet old time coming after Thanksgiving. The final days of November seem to take forever. You’re a kid in school and you think you’ve hit mid-December, but you look at the calendar and see that it’s just December 1.

If that weren’t enough, most schools in the U.S. this year have school until Friday, December 22. When I was a kid, my mindset was always like, “Really? Do we really have to go to the bitter end?” Of course, I ran into a friend the other day, who’s a teacher, and he mentioned that he’s hanging on by his finger tips. Good grief, when I was a kid, could someone have please told me that teacher’s didn’t want to be in school either? I’m not sure that it would have made any difference, but it would have been still nice to know.

The big finale

If kids have survived those two giants, they think they’re in the free and clear, but not so fast, Quick Draw McGraw. There’s still Christmas itself. Christmas Eve is a festive, fun day. Yes, that’s all true, but you still need to be patient. The big finale still takes time. You still need to be on your best behavior. Do you know how hard that is for a kid? Okay, do you know how hard that is for me an adult?

Yes, yes, the clock seems to run like molasses in December. It’s never an easy ride, but it brings a wonderful prize at the end.

  1. This is great! I’ve long suspected this was a dad’s view of December, hahaha! Not for mom- mom has been running, since the beginning of November, on a treadmill of a calendar that keeps ramping up its incline and speed. She can’t slow down and God forbid she lose one of her lists! And everyday the calendar laughs as it seems to jump squares ahead like checkers. Her struggle is to find the peace. And the joy. And the beauty of the season. Which I suppose is the same for dad and the kids. I suspect there is a partnership to be forged which would help everyone to find what God has for them… we’re still working thru the red tape in my house. 😅

    1. Ha, ha, I wouldn’t call it a dad’s point of view, more me channeling my inner kid! If I put my dad hat on, it’s running much faster than that. I’m the organizer in our family, so this time of year, I’m running check after check making sure we haven’t forgotten anyone or anything. And usually, we’re way behind! Yikes

      1. I was exaggerating a bit about how it goes in my house too… but I’ll bet your wife appreciates that you step up and organize. It is a big job with an inflated burden of responsibility!

  2. Since the retail community now starts Christmas in July, my feeling about how time moves towards Christmas has changed. The anticipation actually begins before football season starts. That being said, I do start to get “antsy” December 1st. Then, I REALLY start to think time has slowed, waiting for the big day!

  3. I think this December whipped by. Maybe it was going to SF to visit the kids two weeks ago and being away for Thanksgiving weekend. It took days away. Growing up on Christmas Eve, we played Christmas carols together. I played flute, my mom piano, dad larinet and my brother the sax. My brother and I would play so fast — like it was a race. After that, we opened presents. In our household, presents waited until Christmas morning.

  4. Every year flies as we get a little older year by year, doesn’t it… the strangest thing for me is that Christmas is in summer here in Australia and it’s not the time of year we can withdraw to the fireside or slow down for winter but it is good to nurture that child within at every opportunity because there’s a huge difference between childish and child-like, I believe. Happy solstice ☺️

  5. Oh please! Our Thanksgiving is way back in October so Christmas isn’t even on the horizon…
And December goes by LIKETHIS! Do you think I’m ready for Christmas? No! I swear we went from December 1 to 21 in two days… Just sayin’ 😉

  6. For me, December feels like a long chore because of the really dark days. Thankfully it’s Winter Solstice today and the days start getting gradually longer again. 🙏

And yes, I’m with those complaining that school is going till the bitter end this year. Bah Hambug.

  7. I remember the slow crawl to Christmas as a kid, but as an adult, time seems to be flying by. 2024 is banging at the door, and I’m not letting her in yet! I’m trying to give myself permission to stop all the fussing at least once a day, put my feet up and just be! Today, I’m cheating and catching up on my favorite writers! Hugs, C
