Dessert anyone?

I know different cultures have their versions of Thanksgiving and giving thanks. We celebrate Thanksgiving next week in the U.S. When I reflect on Thanksgiving over the years, I think about spending time with my favorite people. I think of some of my favorite foods too: turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, baked corn, and roasted broccoli.

Thanksgiving dinner has always been a special time, but I have to admit that I have a sweet tooth. I’m especially partial to desserts. Yes, you guessed it, pumpkin, pecan, or apple pies, pumpkin roll, cheesecake, or sugar cookies. They’re all wonderful desserts.

I hope I’ve made your mouth water.

I bring it up, because, while I’m not much of a baker, there’s a lot that has happened this year and I’m grateful and I want to celebrate with something different. I’m looking for ideas. I know WordPress readers won’t let me down. What’s your favorite Thanksgiving dessert? What special desserts stick out to you?

I have less than a week and the clock is ticking, I need your help. What do you suggest?

  1. For me it’s no contest; I’d choose pecan pie or apple pie every time. But most people I know automatically choose/expect pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I suppose as long as there’s lots of whipped cream!

  2. Pumpkin and apple are the ‘standards’ I grew up with. Sometimes my grandmother made a mincemeat pie (the one without meat) or, if she didn’t have all of the ingredients or the time, a raisin pie. I’d always choose one of them if available, mostly because pumpkin and apple pies can be made when it’s not even a holiday.

Good luck with your decision! I have a recipe here called “Amish Oatmeal Pie” that I’m going to be trying in the near future to see if it’s worth sharing in one of my future posts about my happy place. I’d share the recipe with you, but I haven’t tested it out yet!

  3. I would always accept pumpkin something or other, but there are lots of ways to go without dessert being a pie…pumpkin mousse is lovely, creamy pumpkin ice cream with pastry crust sprinkles, pumpkin cheesecake with a chocolate sauce drizzle, pumpkin creme brulee…

  4. You know what i have to say when you ask about pies. LOL! Shoo-fly! Vanilla pie is another one that I really like. My mom would make that and shoo-fly pie for the holidays, along with mincemeat pie for my dad.
Another dessert that we have at Thanksgiving is Watergate dessert. Basically pistachio pudding with cherries and coconut, and tiny marshmallows in it.

  5. I love all things pumpkin and although I tried to avoid the pumpkin pancakes in the breakfast meeting I just had, I could not resist temptation. So good…with cream cheese swirled in between. I have 1/2 of them sitting here in the fridge – come on over, Brian. I’ll share and we can talk about more dangerous sweets. Oh my! 🤣🤣🤣

  6. I also have a sweet tooth 🙂 As for my favorite Thanksgiving dessert, I have to go with pumpkin pie. Yeah, it’s the traditional choice (some may say boring choice), but I look forward to it.

If you’re in the mood for something different…. how about gingerbread cake? I made one last year for my mom’s birthday (in December). I’m pretty sure I used the following recipe from Food Network. But after I failed trying the “royal icing,” I went with a basic buttercream frosting with the eggnog flavors from this recipe (bourbon, nutmeg, etc.).

    1. Can never go wrong with buttercream frosting. You’re not the only sweet tooth. I sort of like the idea of a gingerbread cake. It sounds doable for someone with — how do I put this — with my limited baking skills. I’ll check out the recipe. Thank you Dave.

  7. I love Sandra Lee’s Semi-Homemade Berry Cookie Cobbler. It’s my brother’s favorite and everyone else enjoys it as well. Here’s where you can find the recipe —

Of course, I’ve tweaked it to make it my own. For instance, I use peach filling instead of apple filling, and I put in a little more sugar than it calls for. Taste it to make sure you like how the mixed berry filling tastes before it goes into the oven. Add more cinnamon or more sugar if you like. Or follow the recipe exactly. The other thing I’d suggest is that you bake it for as long as you need to because ovens vary. It takes my oven a lot longer to bake the cookie layer topping than the recipe says. That may be because I use 1 1/2 packages of cookie dough! Ha! I serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Anyway, I like that it’s a cobbler and and I think all of the elements speak to fall. Super easy to make and it’s a hit at our home! Hope this helps! Mona

    1. Hmm, more sugar than the recipe calls for!!! Now you’re talking. You’ve peaked my interest. Ha, ha. I like your description too. “Super easy.” That’s right up my alley. Ha, ha. Thank you so much for the ideas. Love it.

  8. Happy Thanksgiving Brian. We don’t celebrate it here, but I’ll take any excuse for cake … gingerbread or fruitcake … or chocolate gateau/black forest gateau would be my choice.

  9. Sweet Potato Pie is at the top of our traditional desserts. Pecan pie and coconut pie as well, but not quite as popular as sweet potato pie. We already have our bunch of sweet potatoes rip roaring and ready to go for next week!!! 🥧🥧🥧 Sorry, but I am not a pumpkin fan! 😣

  10. I can answer your favorite-desert question by telling you … there are no words adequate for how much I want to be able to reach through my screen and eat that entire pumpkin pie, right now. (Soon enough, though, there will be pumpkin pie … *confetti*)

      1. I haven’t been brave enough to go to the store yet. Looks like it’s starting to get crazy out there and there are still days left before thanksgiving. My daughter is coming in first on Wednesday. Thinking of making them for when she gets here first. I’ll let you know.

  11. We usually have pumpkin and apple pie, but sometimes instead of those I’ll make my pumpkin dump cake. I also have a recipe for pumpkin cookies that are delicious. And this year, my son wants me to make my toffee bars (like a shortbread cookie with toffee bits and glaze icing). These are all good and if you want any recipes, I’d be happy to share. 🥧🍪😁

  12. At first I thought you asked “what desserts stick with you?” At this age – all of them! 🙂 I love my mom’s apple pie a la mode. It’s probably not my all-time favorite dessert but since it comes with the comfort of having my mom there, it tops everything else. ❤

  13. Happy Thanksgiving! You made my mouth water and crave for some pecan and pumpkin pies. This season is a good excuse to turn a blind eye to its calorie count. (good dessert for the sweet tooth!)
