Finding true love

We’ve had several fall weddings and are also celebrating our own anniversary, so I’ve been thinking a lot about marriage. It’s a monumental moment, two people walking down the aisle to say their vows. There’s plenty of jokes about marriage:

  • “I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.” —Rita Rudner
  • “Before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are.” —Will Ferrell
  •  “Love is blind; marriage is the eye-opener.” —Pauline Thomason
  • “Love is a two-way street constantly under construction.” —Carroll Bryant
  • “Love is a lot like a backache; it doesn’t show up on X-rays, but you know it’s there.” —George Burns

But there’s lots to take solace too:

  •  “My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.” —Winston Churchill
  • “A happy marriage is a long conversation which always seems too short.” —André Maurois
  • “We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness–and call it love–true love.” —Robert Fulghum
  • “Marriage is a risk; I think it’s a great and glorious risk, as long as you embark on the adventure in the same spirit.” —Cate Blanchett
  • “A simple ‘I love you’ means more than money.” —Frank Sinatra
  • “Love is a friendship set to music.” —Joseph Campbell

That’s it, that’s the post. Just a few jokes and then a few inspirational quotes — no matter where you stand in your life.

Hope you have a great day!

  1. I love the different perspectives you shared about marriage. The Will Ferrell one made me laugh. It’s always good to see your future spouse at their worst, because those moments will happen. Marriage is an adventure for sure and one that is, as Cate Blanchett said, a glorious risk.

  2. How true is this one? “Love is a two-way street constantly under construction.” —Carroll Bryant
and I don’t take this one negatively or as a joke. A good marriage is worked on by both parties always.

  3. I was really enjoying reading through this post. But the last line kind of threw me off that enjoyment. Coming at the end of an article all about marriage, it felt to me like you were saying that you wish all of us hope to find love, joy and happiness with a partner/A marriage. I am not married, although I have been, and I have a lot of love, joy and happiness in my life.

    1. Oh my goodness, let me look at that again …. This is what I hate sometimes about writing and not being able to communicate what I’m really trying to say. I was trying to say love and happiness no matter where you stand. My apologies if it doesn’t say that.

  4. These are all fantastic! Thank you for sharing Brian. I think the first is my favorite: I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.” 😂

  5. I love the “love” quotes. The quips are pretty funny, as well. My parents had what they called the marriage test. Before my brother got married and before I got married, we had to spend a long weekend at our cabin with our future spouse. No running water, but a pump outside. A fireplace for heat. An outhouse behind the cabin. But a beautiful river and mountain views. No electricity or internet of course. My brother and his wife have been married for more than 40 years and we’re on 37.

  6. I’m 13 years in…and I’ve been having a rough thoughtful patch lately…the fun of this kind of lightens my spirits…
Marriage is beautiful…it just requires commitment and lots of love

      1. Thank you so much Brian… I need all the positive thoughts I can get right now.

I think people avoid talking about the hard elements for fear of attracting more negative vibes.

  7. My husband and I met very young, we sort of grew up together, and honestly I can’t imagine my life without him. Marriage is hard, we all get frustrated with each other or angry at times. When that happens, after the initial rush of emotion, I try and refocus on the good things about my husband, the things that attracted me to him in the first place, and consider how grateful I am to walk through this life with someone so dependable, loving and loyal. My experience of marriage has been to focus on the positives, learn to compromise, forgive, and move on. Hugs, C

  9. I was lucky I like my husband as much as I love him. But marriage is not just a bed of roses, there are hard times we have to master, some more, others less. It’s a journey that asks for a daily commitment.
