The doctor pulled the curtain back and came into our room. My wife was pregnant with our second child. I seem to recall it being our first, but she’s the mom, so I’ll take her word for it. In any event, she was nearing full-term, coming up on her 38th week. The doctor looked a few things over and quickly left before we had a chance to ask any questions.
“Where’s he going,” I asked my wife.
After an especially busy day, my wife started having pains in her stomach. She knew a lot already, having given birth to our daughter, and had read a ton, so she suspected the pains might be Braxton-Hicks contractions, the false contractions that are the body’s way of preparing for true labor. When she called her obstetrician, he told her to go directly to the emergency room.

No, no, I Googled the symptoms, I know I’m right!
Of course, when we got to the hospital, the ER doctor looked her over for a few minutes, left, came back again and then made the call to send her home. I remember being appalled at the decision.
“Where’s the real doctor? He’s too young to be a doctor? He looks like that crazy guy in my Fantasy Baseball League and we don’t trust him with any important league decisions. This guys wants to send you home. Why are we trusting him?” I asked my wife.
Of course, my wife laughed at me and my crazy man routine.
She was used to my impatience. As we walked to our car, she gave a mini lecture on the female body and how Braxton Hicks were just a part of the process. She told me too that expectant mothers can experience Braxton Hicks weeks or months before real labor begins.

Patience is a virtue
I think back often on that experience for a million different reasons. Of course, the young doctor, who I had questioned, made the correct call. My wife’s pains went away as quickly as they came. Our son would come a week later, but I’m reminded too that just because I want something to happen or that I’m willing it to happen, doesn’t make it so. Patience is a part of life. You need to accept and even tolerate delays without getting angry or upset.
In that crazy moment, I had lots of questions, but something a family friend said years ago has always stuck with me. She said that life would bring highs and lows, we need to wait our turn, be patient, and be ready for anything.
I write more about resilience and grit in my post, Losing my patience, on The Heart of the Matter. In particular, I make a plea for insight into how to be more patient, because God knows I need all the patience and trust I can get.
Even all these years later!

Not alone in this Brian- there are moments when I have zero patience, and I know that’s not the best answer for anyone.

I’d like to say this is a new thing for me . . . but I have too many family members who would break out laughing if I wrote that. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hmm. What are my thoughts about patience? I guess I’ll just have to practice my patience skills and wait till they show up—in their own time. Rats. I want what I want and I want it NOW!

You get me Julia!!! I want what I want and I want it now. I really don’t understand why the world doesn’t work according to my plans Ha, ha. Oh, the crazy world we live in. I have my days, but definitely need to work on building up my patience levels. 🙂

Gosh, Brian. You’re making me think that volumes on the subject of patience could be written! What a BIG subject it is. Like, what am I waiting for? What’s the hurry? I think maybe there’s a life lesson or two involved here . . . oh my. So much to learn! 😉

Brian my friend, you are so funny, but your underlying message is spot on…Patience is a part of life and patience is definitely a virtue! Honey, don’t we all learn that lesson the hard way? LOL 😂😜🤣 I’m still learning! 🥰🙏🏼😘

I feel like there are times when impatience is warranted. Within reason, of course.

Oh so true! Life gives us plenty of opportunities to practice patience! And there are still times I need a lot of practice! It can be hard for sure.

I’m sure you were worried when your wife was sent to the ER. I’m glad it all worked out so well and that as a mom, she totally knew what was going on.

Of course, it all worked out in the end. Just a scare . . . but has made a great story over the years.

I too can be guilty of the reverse age stereotypes but glad to hear it all worked out in the end. That is said advise from your family member!

Yes, not my finest moment Ab. It was less his age and more his lack of a bedside manner, but yes, I should have been better in the moment!!!

I think patience comes with pregnancy just to warm us up to being patient with our kids. 🙂 Great story and post, Brian!

Yes, it does come in handy when you have kids. Maybe I’m losing my patience now because my kids are grown. Ha, ha.

Yes, our first two definitely took their sweet time. The last one, like me, didn’t have a lot of patience. He was ready when he was ready and came when he wanted. We made it to the hospital in the nick of time. Ha, ha.

All three of mine were determined to relax and keep us on edge for as long as possible. They haven’t changed. LOL

I think it’s time for a little payback Belladonna. “Oh, honey you want the keys to car, oh I’ll think about it, come back to me in a couple of hours, just like you made me, your poor mother, wait and wait and wait!” Ha, ha, ha. Yes, I’m sure you’ll get some eye-rolling, but it will still be worth it. 🙂
