Oh, I got nothing today. The proverbial “can” as in having a blog post prepared and “in the can and ready to go at a moment’s notice” is empty. The in-the-moment water spout is dry too, in fact it’s as dry as the Mojave Desert.
Oh, it’s not for the lack of trying. I sit down at my desk and get myself ready to write. I shake my head to shake off the rust. I turn on the faucet and nothing comes out. I shake my head again, that can’t be right, there’s got to be something. I hit the make-believe sink, oh, here comes something and out comes one tiny droplet of water. I hit it again and there’s a gurgle, but nothing else.
This is not good. I think to myself, I’m a professional writer, I will not let a little dry spell beat me. I yell at the top of my lungs, “Come out, come out, wherever you are” and in the process scare Nittany, our poor little dog, who was sleeping soundly in the next room. Nope, there’s still nothing.

Never giving up
I’ll fix this I think to myself. I start typing: See Spot run, see Spot play, see Spot jump over the fence. I find that sometimes writing silly sentences, starts the juices flowing. Oh, sometimes, but not today.
I’ve got nothing.
I grimace in disgust. The well is dry today, but I promise that there will be something here tomorrow. I’ve been running lately and am behind on posts. So, check back tomorrow. I’ll be back. Hopefully fresher and ready to go.
Of course, even in this dry spell, I think of a funny story. When I worked on a farm two summers as a kid, the farmer used to joke that if it got any drier he was going to do his rain dance. Now he never really explained what his rain dance might look like and he wasn’t exactly the most coordinated fellow — his pants were usually covered in dirt and grass stains, if that tells you anything — but I always wondered what the rain dance would look like.
I guess that means I need to try out my own little writing rain dance? You’ve been warned, you might want to close your eyes. It could get pretty ugly around here! Think Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes doing her unconventional dance on Seinfeld. Yikes! It really is a dry spell.

This happens with me too, Brian, I don’t always have something ready to go too. Sometimes you have to pull something from the archive. There is water in the Mojave Desert via the summer monsoon rains, and the nearby Spring Mountains have springs with water oozing out. 😎

Good to know the Mojave has water! Me … we’ll see, probably enough posts for this week, but need to get back to the grindstone!

Don’t grind it too hard, Brian!

I love how you turned a post about not having a post into a post. Still with me? I’m not sure I’m following my own drivel. No matter. All is well because you provided a welcome smile on a Tuesday morning…that feels suspiciously like a Monday. 😎🤣😎

Oh yea, I’m with you. I understand. The post … Yea, I’m sort of sneaky that way. The lone drop of water was this post. I definitely need to work on my supply of posts. Hate when the well is dry.

I am feeling exactly the same way today! I schedule a day in advance, so I do have time to come up with something!

Yes, some writing days are slower than others. I think I’m back on track for the next few days but I need to step it up.

I never seen anyone claiming to have nothing to write about be as charming as you, Brian!

Charming? No way, but thank you anyway. You’re the best Wynne.

Working through the dry spell in itself is a writing topic. 😊 Bring on the Elaine rain dance!

Oh my yes, I take the blogs/stories wherever I can get them. But, no, you won’t be seeing me dancing. Ha, ha, definitely an ugly sight. Ha, ha.

Still you wrote a post with a message. Maybe just dance like Elaine and let it all fly free. 😆

Yes, you just need to let it fly!

Oh, how you lie. You had something to say and you said it. You wrote about it for all of us—those confounding dry spells that plague every writer at one time or another. Who among us can’t relate to that? No Elaine Rain Dance needed here, Brian. You done good!

Ya got me Julia! Ha, ha, Still managed to write something. It is funny how some days we have tons of things to say and others, it’s slower. I really didn’t have much other than the first line. Funny that I was able to get anything out of the post. Ha, ha.

Something out of nothing. Nothing like having a bit of hidden talent squirreled away under the belt!

Yea, but what do I do the rest of the week. Ha, ha. Fortunately, I think I’m good the rest of the week, but I definitely need to find some time to write and restore the surplus of posts to come. Thanks for the humor and encouragement Julia. Much appreciated.

With my post that was published on Monday, the well of posts I have managed to maintain all year is dry. There are drafts, ideas I’ve started putting into printed words, but my muse seems uninspired to get down and into the subject enough to make the words flow. I get the feeling, though I’m not as crafty as you are to make a post about not having anything to post! Fortunately, finding posts from bloggers I enjoy following is always a treat, but never an expectation, and hopefully those who follow me feel the same.

Yes, I like to have that well of posts too. When it goes dry, it’s a bit unnerving, but I’m sure it will come back in time. You’re right, I find lots of inspiration and ideas from others. They write something that spawns an idea and allows me to run in a completely different direction. Funny how that works. Good luck getting re-stocking your well josborne!

Oh boy, can we all relate to dry spells. But look what you did. Started writing, and wrote this post. Thanks for reminding us to just get started.

You made me think of the Hemingway quote, “All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” The power is in the discipline of sitting down and making something of the words that come out. Ha ha. Thank you!!!
