Every culture is different. In places like the U.S. or Germany, strict punctuality is expected for everything from business meetings to casual social gatherings. Meanwhile, in Latin America and some Middle Eastern cultures, time is viewed as more of a fluid concept over adhering to a rigid clock.

It’s not just time. The “A-okay” hand gesture (thumb and index finger forming a circle) signifies approval in the U.S. However, it means “money” in Japan, is a crude insult in Brazil, and translates to “worthless” in France.
Despite our different cultures and understandings, I’m convinced that wherever people call home around the globe, most homes have a junk drawer. And in that drawer they keep the miscellaneous stuff—junk for short—that we collect and come across in our lives.

You Never Can Tell
In my house, this universal truth lives in an old hutch that my father refurbished forty-plus years ago. I love the old piece for the memories that it brings. In the top-most drawer, we keep things like tape; extra pens; every random electronic cable, power cord, and extension cord you can imagine; scissors; outdated glasses; and notepads. It’s a mishmash of everyday things.
Unfortunately, our junk drawer was getting out of hand recently. I had to take matters into my own hands. I drew the short straw and decided that I needed to clean it out. As soon as I started, though, I had to laugh. It wasn’t just the number of things in the drawer, but the craziness of it.
For example, there were two old appliance manuals. The first one was to the microwave that we bought three years ago. Now the microwave is self-explanatory, but we still felt the need to keep the manual. I’ve never once opened it to check something out.
We have another one for the refrigerator. I kind of get that. Please note my phrasing: “kind of.” We had the refrigerator for ten years. It’s long since gone to the Great Landfill in the Sky. But we’ve still kept the manual. Um, hello.
I didn’t feel so bad, though, when I heard one study that found that homeowners typically keep appliance and home system manuals for as long as they own the item or the house. Many users retain them for troubleshooting, repairs, or to increase resale value. We’ve owned our house now for more than twenty years. If that’s the case, that means we have manuals for appliances we’ve long thrown away.

My desk drawer – All valuable stuff!
The Junk That Will Outlive Us All
There’s something else that gets thrown into our junk drawer: all the little Allen wrenches (hex keys) that you need to put together a desk or bookcase that we’ve bought over the years. We have at least four or five of them. There are the little extra screws and screw coverings that you get, too.
Why do we still have them? Umm, you just never know.
The desk that we bought in 2010 might wobble, the appliances in our kitchen will eventually upgrade, and the centuries-old debates over cultural differences will roll on. But as long as humanity keeps inventing DIY furniture and losing the caps to random ink pens, the universal junk drawer remains secure.
It turns out, we aren’t so different after all. We’re all just trying to keep it together—one mystery cord and outdated manual at a time.
What’s the weirdest item currently surviving in your household junk drawer?

We moved not long ago and the first thing we had to decide in the kitchen arrangement was where to put the junk drawer! I guess the weirdest thing in mine is a key that I have no idea what it opens!

I guess everyone has a junk drawer. The contents may be different in each one, but we need to sort through them once a year at least. I have a part for a Christmas Santa that needed to be repaired. Several nail files, a few appliance light bulbs and a million paper clips, hair pins, pencils and Q-tips that are unusable.

I love the universal nature of it. We all have our reasons. They may vary a little but we all need one!

My wife, Momo and I go through ours every few months, and always find something surprising we were missing. I view life the same way, go through things every few months and discard the thoughts and things that make your life too complicated. It actually works. I also found a key to my shed in the back yard that had been lost for a few years, stuck to the back of an old school pink pencil eraser, so junk drawers are full of surprises, as is life.

Love the idea of cleaning out every few months! Love that discipline. I’m sure it makes a difference. Ha ha.

Honestly, ours has crossed the line from a single drawer into a full-on ‘junk drawer empire’! Every so often we clean it out and laugh at why an item was placed there in the first place!

Junk drawer empire. I love that. I have the same issue. It seems to expand like little bunnies. Ha ha.

I have a “junk box,” It sits on a shelf above my water heater and moves with me when I move. As for those hex keys? I just used one to tighten up the cats’ scratching post. So I hang on to it. You never know….

Those keys — can find them but always needed. Ha ha.

Well, I don’t have much in mine, but the other two hoarders in the house have a lot. I think there’s a little ketchup packet in one, just in case we need it in the future. 😂

I like that approach. Yea, yea, it’s the other hoarders in my house. Ha ha.

When we sold our last house in 2019 we handed the new owners manuals for everything in an organized binder. They were knocked out. Our junk drawer ha the same kind of things as yours except it is all in organized inserts. Makes it easy to toss a nut or screw in its proper place.

I have a junk drawer too. I tie it up too every once in a while, and I throw things away, but after a very short time it’s back to being a proper junk drawer. If you ask me, it’s the most useful of my drawers, not because you always find what you are looking for in it or something to surprise you😉

Yes … the one drawer that will give you something everytime you open it. The gift might not be what you were looking for or want at the moment. But it’s a gift. Ha ha.

I went to the main junk drawer in my kitchen to find the oddest thing I could find.
I found a pack of Rainbow World “cigarette” wrappers. I goggled them – they are 1971 vintage wrappers and a pack is selling on EBay for $44.
I don’t know anyone who has wrapped “cigarettes” since probably the late 1980s so they must have been my husband’s, or been left behind when his roommate moved out and just traveled with us from California to Connecticut.
I put them back in the drawer 😂
(I wrote a comment about this before but it disappeared. Hopefully this one shows up)

Here’s to the 30 Allen keys we all have lying around at home in our junk drawers! And I hear you on the junk drawer, the one drawer we just throw everything in and get stressed out about ever having to tidy up.

I feel so accomplished—I actually cleaned out my junk drawer several months ago! Among the treasures I uncovered was ONE dog rain bootie. I have absolutely no idea where the other one went or why I apparently thought the remaining bootie deserved permanent storage. I also found one of his partially chewed squeaky toys, which I strongly suspect someone hid in there because they could no longer tolerate the squeaking. Honestly, I can’t even blame them.
But those mystery cords are another story. I swear, every time I finally throw one away after wracking my brain trying to remember what on earth it belongs to, it never fails—I’ll discover exactly what it was for the following Tuesday…. I just can’t win the battle with those things!

I’m a mystery cord collector. They seem to grow and attract other cords. Kind of funny how that works.

Oof! What IS it about old appliance manuals? Especially for long-forgotten kitchen gadgets? We’ve got a drawer…which has far too many Cuisinart this-and-that paperwork in it — for tiny choppers, blenders, whozits and whatsits we’ve never used…and I dare say couldn’t locate if we ever wanted to use one of them. Too funny, this post. C’mon over and you can help us tidy up…and build a bonfire! 😜😜😜

We’ve always had a junk drawer in the kitchen. It does seem like the appropriate place to collect junk. One time in Palm Springs my husband said he was going to clean the junk drawer. He took out the drawer and threw everything into the trash can! Something I need to do is throw out computer cords that are obsolete. I finally got rid of ear buds that don’t work with anything we own anymore. Also, I have back up drives that aren’t compatible with anything, but I can’t get myself to get rid of them.

I have to admit it. I’ve been tempted to do that too. Just throw everything and start again. Ha ha. I’m always worried though that I’ll need the very thing I threw out!! Ha ha.

Good question. I’d tell you, but that means I’d have to open it and check. I’m just not ready to tackle an endeavor like that yet. A giant ball of rubber bands, I know that much.
