My friend pulled into the parking space next to me, waving enthusiastically. I waved back. When he stepped out of his car, he was a sweaty mess. He couldn’t wait to announce that he had just won his pickleball game.
Woohoo, go guy. You da man.
If it had ended there, all would have been well. But he had to start digging. He asked if I had taken up the sport yet. Before I could even finish my answer, he reached back into his car to show off his shiny new paddle and bag.
Oh, great, good for you.

You Gotta Try This!
If it’s not pickleball lately, it’s retirement. When I ran into another friend recently, I couldn’t help but laugh at her response when I asked how post-work life was treating her. She leaned in close like she was passing along corporate secrets.
“You need to retire . . . today.”
She acted as if she had found the cure for some crazy disease and was letting people know for the first time. “Oh, you have to try it! You’ll love retirement. You can throw that lousy alarm against the wall and never be on someone else’s time again.”
Ohhh, silly me? Why didn’t I think of that?
Well, first of all, because I have . . . obligations. And second, who wouldn’t retire early if given the chance? If I could have retired at age 30, 40, 50, I would’ve done it in a heartbeat. Don’t get me wrong—I love my chosen line of work, but getting to do whatever I want with my time? When I want? Sign me up.
Unfortunately, I have a few more years of work in front of me. Don’t worry though. I know exactly what I’ll do when the time comes. It’s not even a question. I’ll stay busy—I’ll write, I’ll volunteer, and I’ll run my own schedule. I’m getting closer to 60 with each passing birthday, but I still have time, and I still have a few professional goals I want to conquer first.
Time will tell.

A Growing List!
In the meantime, pickleball and retirement seem to be the latest additions to an endless list of topics people love to sell you on:
- Side Hustles: The classic social media pitch. “Here’s how I became a millionaire by age 25.” Now complete with unsolicited advice from your friends.
- Miracle Weight-Loss Secrets: “Lose weight just like me!”
- Essential Oils: The cure for everything that ails you.
- Crypto: You don’t hear quite as much about this one anymore, but the believers are still out there waiting in the wings.
- Marathon and Hyrox Training: Run, run, and keep running.
What unsolicited lifestyle trend are you currently being sold on? Are the pickleball pros coming for you, or is someone trying to get you to invest in a side hustle? Drop your favorite (or least favorite) pitch in the comments below—I promise not to try and sell you a paddle.

My gym is big on the Hyrox craze. Not for me I say as I skip the sign ups. I do Spartan races at my own pace. I don’t need to shatter world record. No thanks. The pressure!
I’m with you my friend. I can retire next year technically but eh…I’m not ready.
Happy Friday!

Okay, Kiki this shows where my brain goes, but when I see Hyrox, I add a d in there and think of the Oreo-like crème filled chocolate Hydrox cookies and then I’m forgetting completely about working out!!! Oh well. And that’s what I think is so enticing about spartan. There are big challenges… but do it at your own pace. Anyway, good for you keeping clear of those hydrox cookies!! They’re a killer for the diet and workout routine. 🤭🤭🤭🤣🤣🤣🤣😎🍪

You know it’s funny. We have a black and white Hyrox banner at the gym and I think of the cookies every damn day there! Great minds my friend!
Happy Friday!

You must prepay your funeral. I have a piece of real estate that you’ll love. You have to start using AI.

Yes, to all of these. Ha ha, I love that list Kathy. If I hear one more good or bad thing about AI … my head might explode!!! Reminds me of 1999 when everyone was talking about Y2K and the clock turning to the year 2000.

The only essential oil, as far as I’m concerned, is olive. And I don’t get pickleball. Isn’t it just tennis with a smaller racket? Sounds like a different sort of racket if you ask me.
I can’t even fathom retirement yet. Hell, I don’t know that I’m even in my Last Job Ever.

I probably need to work until I’m 80 so I’m with you. Haha. And yes, pickleball just doesn’t do it for me. It most definitely is a racket!

Okay…laughing my backside off here…too funny. I’m literally going to borrow your phrase:
“Woohoo, go guy. You da man.”
It might help me shake off a duo — writer friends who seem hell-bent on recruiting me into their pickle ball league. No, nope, no. I’ll keep cheering them on, as you did. Maybe that’ll work? Shake ’em off? Or maybe I should play with them ONCE and they’ll understand???

You’re starting to cave Vicki. Hold strong. The best use of a pickleball racket is to beat those meanies back. Havha. Isn’t that its purpose!!!! 🤭🤭🤣🤣😎😎😎😎😎😎

Hilarious, Brian! 😂 If it’s not someone trying to convert me into a pickleball fanatic with a shiny new paddle, it’s a wellness guru preaching about the magical properties of essential oils. My default reaction at this point is a polite nod and a silent mental exit. Definitely dodged the paddle pitch so far—let’s hope it stays that way!

I kind of got the pickleball pitch. “Okay, you like it, you think I will too.” The retirement one floored me though for the lack of social skills. Not everyone has the same goals, same plans, etc. Haha.

Right?! Exactly my thoughts, Brian. People really underestimate how much social grace it takes to just let others map out their own lives! Have a wonderful weekend! ☕

Brian, you hit the nail on the head! The amount of unsolicited advice out there is completely overwhelming. I just smile, nod, and completely ignore the noise!

I’ve never played pickleball and have no desire to. Tennis and ping pong are my faves. 🙂 Thanks for the smiles, Brian. I’m hearing more about miracle drugs or shots, I should say, for losing weight. And all the drug commercials on TV are annoying, especially at the bottom when you read “this could cause death.” Yep, I’m running out right now to get my prescription!
Have a great weekend! 😊

Sorry Brian, but I also fell in love with pickle ball after I retired. It’s a great game for us older guys and gals who still like to compete but can’t hang with the younger ones. Not as much running as many other sports, and a great way to meet new people because many clubs are set up to play with different partners. Unfortunately, less than a year into it, I tweaked my knee and was out of commission for two months. Given that I’ve already had two knee surgeries, I decided it wasn’t worth the risk and retired from the game.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh I’m sorry about the knee problems — nothing more frustrating. I’m trying to get back into running after tweaking my knee a year ago. And I’m exaggerating about pickleball, it’s actually great to see how it’s got people participating and exercising again. I’m just teasing some folks obsession and inability “to read the room.” 🤭🤭😎😎😎

Oh, you are right about people’s obsession and cluelessness. It’s like when you’ve lost a loved one and someone starts complaining about the new traffic light that went up in town.

Oh, that’s a great comparison. A great name for it: Cluelessness.

Brian, I think there is an unwritten rule that enjoying something immediately turns certain people into unpaid sales representatives for it. It is never enough that THEY love pickleball, retirement, running, or essential oils; apparently the rest of us must be converted.
As for the unsolicited lifestyle trend I’m currently being sold on? Exercise. People keep insisting it gives you energy. This sounds suspicious to me. You want me to use the tiny bit of energy I already have…so that I can supposedly get more energy later? That has all the markings of a pyramid scheme. 😂

Such a great post. I think we are in the same shoes and season of life. Some people look at me strange when I tell them I haven’t tried pickle ball yet. Honestly, it just not my thing. I think I’d prefer tennis if I was going to pick up a racket. And my “retired early” friends… yeah, I’m jealous, but at least the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t too far away.

Light at the end of the tunnel. Exactly – that’s what I keep joking to myself. Walk to the light. Better than being 20 and just starting career. But yes, the pickleball players and early retirees – thank you for your suggestion, but we all have our likes and interests. Kind of crazy. Haha.

so funny, and as i’ve mentioned before, people gave me advice beginning when i said i had planned to retire two years later. i did just that and some people were upset when they asked what my retirement plans were and i said that i just wanted freedom and time. i’m sure they thought they’d be seeing me on the streets before long, but it’s worked out well for me and i participate in things i’m interested in, and when they work for me.
we do have a pickleball club here, and i’ve never played or joined and i know many people love it, and i’m happy they love it, but the only thing i’ve done there is take part in a team jigsaw puzzle competition, now that’s a sport i’m pretty good at!
my sports of choice are yard games, like badminton and croquet, (and even dangerous jarts back in the day before they became illegal.)
LikeLiked by 1 person
Jarts. Now that’s a game I want brought back. Get tired of someone bringing up how you need to join a league — play once with them and never have the problem again! My kind of game. Haha. You hit the nail on the head Beth. Suggestions are fine, but we all need to find our own roads to paradise. I suspect I’m going to be like you. I have some retirement ideas, but my biggest goal is just that: freedom and time. That’s what I crave the most.
LikeLiked by 1 person
we can start a jart club, and members can move on after their one game, no leagues needed.

I get a lot of unsolicited parenting advice, so that’s the big pet peeve for me right now. 😂 Pickelball does sound fun to me, but who has the time. And I’m not even remotely close to retiring but boy does it sound good on some days! 🤣

Parenting advice. Ugh. I love it too when the advice comes from people who’ve never had kids, who’ve never had kids with special needs, who are not in your shoes, know what’s going, have lived your life. Ugh. Just horrible.

Thankfully I have never been asked to play pickleball! I’m just not interested and have never been interested in competitive games.
As for retirement, after my husband “retired”, he kept haranguing me to decide when I was going to retire. Mind you, it is the company we created and our son was buying (hadn’t even bought it yet). I guess everyone forgets how important the “money person” is right? It has since been purchased and my husband is back parttime, and I’m down to 4 days a week. But still…

It’s not pickleball or retirement. It’s just people failing to read the room. That’s what bothers me. And good for you . . . down to 4 days. Haha.

I admit, I have pickleball FOMO every time I hear anyone tell me, ” You gotta do this!” I just don’t have time to add it to my list, and this is from a retired (you gotta do this, man) person! And have you heard of memory potions made from jellyfish – it’s sure to cure whatever ails you – Fun topic and great post!

Memory potions …. Hmm, if that’s going to help me keep better lists of all the things floating around in my head then I’m all in. Ha ha. And look at me. I’ll probably fight pickleball for years and then one day play and love it. Ugh!
