I got duped. I’m not sure there’s any other way to describe it.
During a recent family trip to Bethany Beach, Delaware, we decided to grab a quick afternoon snack. While the rest of the crew waited for a basket of Boardwalk Fries, I was assigned a secondary mission: a walk a bit further off the boardwalk to pick up a bucket of kettle corn from Fisher’s Kettle Corn Popcorn for us to share later that evening.
Simple enough task, right?

The Goldilocks Dilemma
I walked into a small, sweet-smelling shop and told the teenager behind the counter that I wanted some kettle corn. He pointed up to a row of empty buckets displayed high on the wall and asked what size I wanted.
Ah, “uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.” The heavy burden of adult decision-making weighed on me. Suddenly, I was Goldilocks from Goldilocks and the Three Bears in flip-flops.
From where I stood, the medium-sized bucket looked tiny—our group would wipe that out before we even made it back to the car. The large looked better, but it still felt like it might get swallowed by a single wave. So, I decided to be bold and courageous. I told the cashier: “Give me the Extra Large Bucket.“
The $35 Visual Illusion
I paid my $35 and stood there nodding with total confidence. I was mildly annoyed with the steep price, but I imagined how great a handful of popcorn would taste. As Goldilocks said, I thought it would be “just right.” At least I thought that right up until the kid pulled an empty XL bucket off the shelf and set it down on the counter. Woooah!
Up close, the thing was gargantuan. Goldilocks had clearly bitten off more than she could chew. I swear it was a visual illusion. High on the wall, it looked like a reasonable family snack. On the counter in front of me, it looked like a livestock trough.
Scientists explain visual illusions as trickery of the brain—your eyes receive visual information, but your mind misinterprets the scale while trying to make sense of the world. In my defense, my brain was clearly sabotaged by perspective and the scent of warm sugar.
Vacation Brain vs. Public Humiliation
Like Goldilocks caught sleeping in Baby Bear’s Bed, I was caught redhanded. For the briefest fraction of a second, I considered backing out. I imagined the sheer humiliation of parading this industrial drum of popcorn past a crowded boardwalk. But the kid was moving with expert speed, scooping kernel after kernel, and I didn’t want to be that guy.
Oh well, I thought. I’m on vacation. At least, I won’t have to deal with Poppa Bear like Goldilocks.

The 24-Hour Vanishing Act
Naturally, my immediate and extended family mocked the sheer size of the tub when I walked back. But guess what? All ten of us demolished that sucker within 24 hours. Visual illusion or not, we take our kettle corn seriously.
I might have gotten duped on the scale, but the popcorn put up zero fight. In the end, we had a popping good time.
Your Turn: What’s the biggest boardwalk or carnival impulse buy you’ve ever been duped into? Did you manage to finish it, or is there a 5-pound gummy bear or jawbreaker still sitting in your pantry? Let me know in the comments!

I don’t know but I do know I can NEVER pass up kettle corn!
Oh, I do know! We went to Buc-ees for the first time on our way to Tennessee. I wanted kettle corn. I took a bag off the wall but it was weird flavored thing and I just wanted straight up kettle corn but there was SO MUCH TO SEE. Heading to the cashier I saw something that looked like plain kettle corn and I grabbed it and paid for it.
Got to the car and it was Buc-ee Nuggets. The first ingredient is Brown Sugar. I ate about 5 and felt my teeth rotting.
Never did get my kettle corn!

Oh I’ve lived such a sheltered life! I’ve never been to a Buc-ees yet! My wife laughs at me but it’s my life’s mission to visit. Ha ha. But no kettle corn. I feel your pain Nancy! That’s not right. 😆😆🤭🤣🤣🤣😎

i love kettle corn and it seems you knew your family well and found ‘just the right size.’ i absolutely love movie theater popcorn, and the new trend seems to be ultra expensive collector popcorn buckets. i haven’t bought one but the latest is the Trojan Horse, from the Odyssey film, and it goes for $69.99. a giant bucket costs the theater around $2.00 worth of popcorn! so lucky it’s not $70!

I would’ve had to pass up $69 popcorn. I’m a sucker for it but even that would’ve been too much for me. Nothing better though than movie theater popcorn.

Funny! We made a similar mistake at a food truck on Lake Erie once. Four of us were browsing the shops and getting a bit hangry when we happened upon a line of food trucks. We stopped at the first one and each ordered a foot long hot dog and being hangry, we went with the bottomless size fries. It was an entire cafeteria tray overflowing with fries! One tray would have more than fed all four of us and we had four to deal with 🙂

It’s a visual illusion! They trick us Jean. It’s not fair! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😎

First of all…there is no such thing as too much Fishers kettlecorn. I was almost drooling at the title of this post and when I saw where you were. I hope you were able to scoff back a little bit after it vanished in 24 hours lol.
As for being duped on the boardwalk??? As a teenager there was just a certain amount of money you needed to spend for all the things you wanted, so you knew what to expect. Skee ball and other games, riding the rides on the boardwalk. All the food from Thrashers Fries to funnel cake and of course the requisite tee shirt that you bought every year.
Most of those things I would still do if I was on a boardwalk right now, and gladly fork over the money for except maybe I will leave the rides alone.

If we stumbled across skeeball — I doubt I would’ve able to get my wife to walk by. She’s not much of a gamer … except when it comes to skeeball. Then she’s all in. And yes, Fishers was amazing!😎😎😎😎

I’m not big on sweets, but I’d be hard pressed to pass on kettle corn. No surprise that your family destroyed the big bucket!! It must have been good, and hopefully worth the steep price.

Yes, $35 seemed steep to me too. But it was really good. Made me forget how much I paid. Everyone was happy too!!

I used to stand in line for 30mins to get a bucket of hot Fishers (Ocean City, MD). Sometimes Bethany.

We were in Bethany. I walked right up. It was morning — so maybe that’s why there wasn’t much of a line!!!

That’s hilarious! 😂 Well done for not buckling at the counter! As I’m British, I have to confess, I’m not sure what kettle corn is. Popcorn?? It sounds really expensive! Haven’t been to a cinema in ages, but I know popcorn there has got pretty expensive in recent years, and I bet half of it ends up under the seat in front!! Glad you all enjoyed it anyway! 😊

It’s pop corn but a sweet-and-savory variety cooked with oil, white sugar, and salt directly in the pot. A little different than the popcorn you might normally get in a movie theater but just as addicting! I wouldn’t normally spend $35 on popcorn but we were away on vacation and it was a treat. It was very good!!!😊

You’re on vacation, treat yourself and sounds like you just did! Those visual illusions can be tricky but I also imagine what a sweet treat that was for everyone. 😊

You have me giggling at my desk with this:
“Suddenly, I was Goldilocks from Goldilocks and the Three Bears in flip-flops.”
I can see you, Brian! Yes, I do! A popping good time! I’m with you…my nemesis would be the kettle corn. 10000000000000%! 😜❤️😜

So so addicting Vicki. I must confess. I probably could have eaten it all myself. I was glad that it was huge number of us to keep my intake down!! Ha ha, and yes, I stood in front of poppa bear in my flip flops. Ha ha. 🐻🐻😎😎😎

This made me laugh because apparently perspective and kettle corn should never be trusted in the same room. But since ten people made short work of that mountain of kettle corn perhaps there’s a bit of a lesson hiding there: some oversized loads were never intended to be handled alone. “Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10). LOL… See there, Goldilocks accidentally stumbled onto something useful after all. Although for $35, I would still expect that bucket to come with its own ZIP code.

Yes perspective is lost in the popcorn and candy store! Yikes! Ha ha. 😎😎😎

It sounds like your family didn’t mind the extra large bucket of kettle corn at all!

There ten or so of us and we all laughed when we saw how quickly we downed the bucket. In our defense, we were hanging out and playing cards. It was too good to pass up. 🍿🍿🍿😎😎😎

When in Budapest we got one of their topical cakevyo go that’s a sort of gigantic ice cream cone but filled with an enormous quantities of a sort of cream, an hours later I was still eating it 🤢and only made my day slightly half way through

I’ve got a major sweet tooth, so kettle corn is right up my alley. Your post made me think of times when I’ve walked out of a store carrying something to the stares of other customers. After my mom moved into assisted living, I often went shopping for her. I remember walking out of a Costco one day, carrying the biggest box of pull-ups I’d ever seen. That’s the kind of thing I would have been mortified by as a teenager, but as a guy in his sixties, I could only smile, imagining what other people, pretending to look the other way, may have thought. As I lifted the hefty box into the back of my vehicle, I said to a passerby, “I’m planning a big night.”😊

I love it Pete! You had the perfect attitude and response. I’m with you. It’s something I probably would’ve been mortified as a kid. Now … so what! Ha ha. 😆😎😎😎

The livestock-trough reveal at the counter got a real laugh out of me, and the fact that ten of you flattened it in 24 hours somehow makes the XL the correct call. We’ve been duped by the boardwalk cotton candy that’s bigger than the kid holding it more times than I’ll admit, it never survives the walk back to the car. Vacation brain wins every time.

I’m glad you liked that line!!! I almost changed it. I was looking for something more in line with the Three bears story. But it was just too good! Tells an interesting story. I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for reading!😎😎😎😎

Oh, you have me laughing, Brian! $35 — that’s steep but apparently that’s what they charge for livestock troughs these days. Funny!
