Traffic is ground to a halt. We’re inching forward a few feet at a time. My wife and I left plenty early so I know we’re not going to be late, but I’m still annoyed. The clock in my head is ticking double time.
I finally look up at the billboard closest to me and break out into a laugh. It isn’t all that funny or amusing; my laugh is more of the sarcastic variety. The billboard features an older gentleman — I presume the lawyer who would take my case if I had one — dressed in an expensive-looking suit with his fist up in the air. He’s got gray hair and a bit of a paunch. In deep, bold font, the text proclaims: “We fight for you.”

The guy in the $3,000 suit and cufflinks is ready to go 12 rounds in a dark alleyway for me? He’s ready to put everything on the line for little old me? Aw-shucks! What a great guy. I can’t help but think to myself, “Um, you don’t look like you could withstand too many make-believe fights, let alone a hard punch to the face, but thank you man.”
Then I see another ad: “Someone in your corner.” I didn’t even know I was in a ring. I didn’t even know that I was in trouble. All these legal eagles ready to go to the mat for me. Wow, now I’m really touched. I might even be drawn to tears. I feel so honored.
It hits me though. Hey guys, can we think of some other fighting idioms? I get that personal injury lawyers need to sell their wares, but can we at least make it interesting? I’m stuck on a major interstate highway that connects the far Western Suburbs with the Walt Whitman Bridge and South Philadelphia and my creative juices start firing away. The ideas start coming out one after another.
I imagine driving another day, hitting the bumper-to-bumper traffic, and seeing:
- Out For The Count. Honest, but maybe a tough sell.
- Coming Out Swinging.
- Roll With The Punches.
- Put Your Opponent On The Ropes.
- Taking Off The Gloves.
- Bobbing and Weaving. It might be a little touchy for some of the more ethically challenged firms, but I’m sure they could figure a way around it.

AI Image
- Delivering the Knockout Punch.
- Putting Up Your Dukes.
- Saved By The Bell — Perfect for when they get you off on a technicality at 4:59 PM on a Friday.
- No Holds Barred — Sounds fierce, until you realize the guy on the billboard looks like his wildest night involves a decaf chamomile tea.
- Down For The Count — A bit of a risk for a medical injury claim, but hey, high risk, high reward.
Yes, these phrases probably wouldn’t help bring in too many clients, but they would at least make the drive into the city a whole heck of a lot more interesting! I sure would remember the name of the law firm.
C’mon, guys, live a little. Who’s with me?

The cowardly lion would be an improvement on these guys!!! Ha ha. You’re onto something though Kathy. The Cowardly Lion wanted courage. I think these guys want courage too. Hiding their fear … with their bravado. What does the lion say? “Put ’em up, put ’em up!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣😎😎

Brian, all these local lawyers want to do is fight for us. I won’t be swayed until they actually air footage during their commercials of throwing haymakers in the courtroom. At that point, I’ll believe they’ll actually fight for me. The boxing analogies are always free-flowing with lawyers to be sure. I think I’d actually prefer a clever, intelligent one to one who can throw a mean left hook.

Oh I would tune in for that Bruce. I don’t drive into the city much but I was shocked by the number of attorney billboards. These guys can barely walk up steps without stopping. Forget about messing up their fancy suit and stepping into a boxing ring. It’s not happening. Yes, I’m like you, I’d much rather see how they help me versus some trite boxing platitudes! 🥊🥊🤭🤭😎😎😎

Exactly! Not a good thing. Ha ha. For me to notice the number of billboards goes to show you how much they’ve increased in recent years. Just crazy. 🤭🤭😎😎😎😎😎

I was just about to type what Joy said! Yes! And geez Louise…why all the violent imagery? Playing to anticipatory road range tendencies? While folks are already trapped and tense in hot cars and too much traffic? Gah! 😜😜😜

Road ragers! We’re the perfect attorney for you! Hire us today and run over all the people you want. Sure does sound like that, doesn’t it? Ha, ha.

How about advertising bargain rates. Something like, “We only want 30% of your settlement. Not a third, like some guys.” Or would that be too much truth in advertising? 😉
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh my, definitely too much truth. Kind of like, “we’ll rob you blind, but hey take it or leave it sucker!” Ha, ha.

We have a bunch of attorney billboards on Interstate 10, our main east west freeway. Thanks to you, I’ll be taking a closer look at them next time we’re driving.

Oh, I’m sorry Elizabeth. They’re all so dull.

You have me laughing, Brian. We have so much legal billboards in our neck of the woods too. It makes me think that they pay off!

I’m thinking that too Wynne. That or there are a lot of accidents on the highway and they get a lot of business from people on the side of the road, looking up at their billboard. Ha, ha.

It’s interesting how many lawyers borrow boxing cliches. If I were an attorney, I’d go a different route. Maybe medical instead. I’d promise to “operate on your behalf” and “cross-examine each witness with surgical precision” and “rid your life of the diseased vermin forever.”

Oh, I see a future in advertising for you! They should be hiring you to write up their ads. Better than what I saw on the highway. Ha, ha.

I’m not sure if you’ve read me long enough to know this, but I graduated with a BA in Advertising. 🙂

You crack me up, Brian! These personal injury ads and your clever suggestions are onto something. And isn’t it something that we often see these ads when we’re driving! It’s like they’re trying to manifest the business!

Oh, so true Ab. It’s like they’re “egging” us on. C’mon Brian, pay attention to my ad and hit the guy in front of you. It doesn’t matter if the accident is your fault or not, we’ll fight for you and get you the money you deserve!!!!! Ha, ha. Crazy.

Bwahahaha. Laughing is SO good for the soul, Brian! My twin and I were singing in the church choir circa 1987ish. We were singing “Oh Happy Day” and EVERYONE in the audience (including our sleeping farmers) had frowns on their faces. My twin and I couldn’t look at each other. My mom said she saw our shoulders start to shake and thought, “uh oh…they’re going to bust out laughing.” That wasn’t the only time we did that….and it’s NEVER at “appropriate” times. I know that Jesus laughs with me—and eye rolls too! tee hee. Laughter–where would we be without it??

Oh yes, humor is good for the soul. And I’m convinced that God has a “wicked” sense of humor. Otherwise, why would he put us in some of the spots that he does. I tell my kids that all the time. Love the story about you and your sister. That’s awesome. And something tells me some of those sleeping farmers got a laugh too!!!!

I’d like to see an historical perspective. How about “I’ll duel for you.” or “I’ll walk the plank for you.” Maybe even the dreaded, “I’ll take a bullet for you.” And there is no fee unless I win.

Oh I like those. They’re all better than what I saw! All funny too. 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎

when stuck in slow motion, you have a chance to really see the details. so funny, we have the same issue. some are flashy, the photos over photo-shopped, exaggerated poses, and the phrasing of the messge is just laughable. yes, i agree with you. what about the lyrics to ‘i would walk 500 miles for you?’

Now that line would interest me. I might still have my doubts about you and whether you’d really do it, but as a GenXer I would give you massive props!!!! 🚶🏽♂️🚶🏽♂️🚶♀️🚶♀️🤭🤭😎😎

Creativity doesn’t seem to be a strong suit for attorneys. Maybe, that’s a good thing. I imagine law doesn’t lend itself to creative thinking. ⭐️🤓

We driving around the States I remember we were so amused by these billboards. Nothing of the sort here, only sketchy and boring politicians 😂

Sketchy, boring politicians. Two different cultures but so alike! Ha ha. My new BRian rule: a politician can only advertise if they’re funny or if they’re truthful in their advertising. “I’m going to cheat and rob you blind! Vote for me!” Ha ha.
