The 98th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday. The Best Picture nominees are led by Sinners (16 nominations) and One Battle After Another (13 nominations). Other nominees include Bugonia, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, Train Dreams, and F1.
This has not been a good year for me. I can’t tell you much about any of them. I’ve seen a couple of them, but it’s definitely been an off year for me.
However, I still hope to catch a few minutes of the awards show. If nothing else, to remember an all-time amazing speech. For my money, actor Matthew McConaughty’s acceptance speech in 2014 for Best Actor ranks as one of the best speeches I’ve ever seen.
Yes, it’s cheesy in spots. It’s corny. But it’s a speech that hits home. It reminds me that we all need something to look up to, something to look forward to, and something to chase.
It’s a lesson in great communication and keeping things simple.

“Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you to the Academy for this, all six thousand members. Thank you to the other nominees. All these performances were impeccable in my opinion; I didn’t see a false note anywhere. I want to thank Jean-Marc Vallée, our director. I want to thank Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner, who I worked with daily.
There’s a few things, about three things, to my account that I need each day. One of ’em is something to look up to. Another is something to look forward to. And another is someone to chase. Now, first off, I want to thank God, ’cause that’s who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton, who said, “When you’ve got God, you’ve got a friend. And that friend is you.”
To my family, that’s who and what I look forward to. To my father, who I know is up there right now with a big pot of gumbo. He’s got a lemon meringue pie over there. He’s probably in his underwear and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite. And he’s dancin’ right now. To you, Dad, you taught me what it means to be a man. To my mother who’s here tonight, who taught me and my two older brothers – demanded – that we respect ourselves. And what we in turn learned, was that we were better able to respect others. Thank you for that, Mama. To my wife Camila and my kids, Levi, Vida and Mr. Stone, the courage and significance you give me every day I go out the door is unparalleled. You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me. Thank you.

And to my hero; that’s who I chase. Now, when I was 15 years old I had a very important person in my life come to me and say, “Who’s your hero?” And I said, I don’t know; I gotta think about that. Give me a couple of weeks. I come back two weeks later, this person comes up and says, “Who’s your hero?” I said, I thought about it. You know who it is? I said, it’s me in 10 years. So I turned 25; ten years later that same person comes to me and goes, “So, are you a hero?” And I was like, not even close! No, no, no. She said, “Why?” I said, because my hero’s me at 35. So you see every day, every week, every month and every year of my life, my hero’s always 10 years away. I’m never gonna be my hero. I’m not gonna attain that; I know I’m not. And that’s just fine with me, because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasin’.
So to any of us, whatever those things are: whatever it is we look up to, whatever it is we look forward to, and whoever it is we’re chasin’. To that I say: Amen. To that I say: Alright, alright, alright.
To that I say: Just keep livin’. Thank you.”

I was so happy when MM won that year. He’s a special person in Hollywood. And that was a career defining role.
You sound like you’d give an Oscar caliber speech too Brian!
Sinners is a worthwhile watch. Ditto Weapons, even if you don’t like horror, because Amy Madigan was just batshit crazy. I hope she wins Supporting Actress this weekend.

Me? Oscar speech. Ha ha, I’d be boring as heck. I’d be thanking everyone and their mother. Ha ha. “And yes thank you to my friends friend friend from 6th grade who helped get me here today!” Oh thank you for the suggestions! I was wondering about sinners and I’m an Amy Madigan fan too. I’m guessing obviously but she’s another who seems very real, authentic and down to earth! Hope so anyway. It’s easy to root for people like that.

I’m in my office and burst into tears. “My hero is me in 10 years. I will keep chasing after him”. What a fantastic concept. This blows me away. Some speeches stick with you. Surely this is one of the tops.
Love this piece my friend.

I know he’s an actor and all … but just love his storytelling and how it’s so relatable! Love the me in ten years idea! Have a great weekend Kiki.

You too!
I miss the Oscars. Used to check out all of the nominations and then watch the awards. When I stopped watching the movies the awards kind of just fizzled.

Yes, I feel like we see more stuff . . . but certainly fewer movies in the theater and fewer Oscar-worthy movies. Ha, ha. What’s that say about me? I think: I watch too much baaaaad TV. ha, ha.

I’ve always been drawn to Matthew. Now I know why. It had to take courage to speak those words in a group of folks that are more into themselves than in God. Beautiful speech.

Yes, I thought so too. Like the simpleness of his words.

Wow! This is so inspirational! I love that, my hero is me 10 years from now. I watched a speech given by Harrison Ford that was fabulous. It was when he was presented with a lifetime achievement award. Very touching. 💞

I saw the same Harrison Ford speech. It was cool to see him behind all the great characters he’s played. If I were in the same situation, I would either ramble on and on and on, boring people half to death. Or I would list everyone and then embarrassingly forget to thank my wife and family. Oh, that would be me. I would be “that guy.” Ha, ha, ending up in the perpetual doghouse. Ha, ha.

Oh, what a good speech that harnesses the power of threes! I haven’t seen many of the movies either so I’m so glad that you warmed me up for the Academy Awards! Thanks, Brian!

The power of threes. It’s funny you mentioned that. I originally wanted to dive into particular elements on the speech. But the more I watched it and read it . . . it works on its own. Yes, I love how he uses storytelling, threes, and authenticity. The story of his dad. It’s the kind of thing we all can relate to.

He’s an actor . . . but I love the impromptu nature of it. Some good messages.

Love the idea of looking ten years into the future. A great way of figuring out your goals and where you want to be. Sounds like your book — Re-create abd Celebrate — too!

I have not seen a single nominated movie. We used to go every weekend to the movies when the theater was walking distance to our house. Now it’s a 40-minute drive and there hasn’t been many movies that motivate me to go.
I missed that speech, but I agree it was a good one!
