The Big Three: Tis the season

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, December 7-13.

—Giving from the heart. In the words of Charles Dicken’s Ebeneezer Scrooge: “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me.’’

—Christmas Cookies. Who doesn’t love freshly baked Christmas cookies

—Ugly Christmas Sweaters. Just because.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has become a Christmas staple. In my house, though, a beagle has that spot.

For my book, the best Christmas song is not “All I Want for Christmas,” but the Snoopy’s Christmas vs. The Red Baron by The Royal Guardsmen. The 1967 song is the fictional account of Snoopy battling the Red Baron on a bitterly cold Christmas Eve. After a long dogfight, the Red Baron has Snoopy in his sights. Instead of shooting Snoopy down, he forces him to land. When they’re on the ground, The Red Baron offers Snoopy a holiday toast.

Carey doesn’t even come in second place on my list. I would put the 1959 original, The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) by Alvin and the Chipmunks in that spot. Ross Bagdasarian (aka David Seville) sang the Christmas carol, varying the tape speeds to produce the high-pitched “chipmunk” voices.

Now those are two Christmas Songs to celebrate!

  1. My wife and I just delivered two very nice gifts to our church for their annual giveaway for kids who otherwise wouldn’t get presents…we love doing this, as well as donating to the local food bank, because when I take for granted things that are given to me, I forget there are people who receive nothing – or spend the day hungry – and it goes against everything the holiday season should be…

  2. Thanks for the reminder that I have to bake my Christmas Spritz cookies tomorrow! I like Mariah’s song just fine, but “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses is the one that always puts an extra spring in my step.

  3. Thank you, thank you! You are the first person to play Snoopy’s Christmas vs. The Red Baron by The Royal Guardsmen. It is my favourite Christmas song of all. You are the only other person I have met who shares that love. You have made my Christmas!

  4. very fun, Brian – and I do not enjoy Carey’s holiday song and have not really liked any of songs since 1993. But I am glad her holiday song has brought her so much success.
And thanks for sharing Snoopy’s Christmas vs. The Red Baron by The Royal Guardsmen – so fun.
I like “grandma got run over by a reindeer” and you might laugh, but Cheech and Chong had a Christmas skit I recall liking – when younger – think they said take off to the great white north?

  5. Love seeing anything Peanuts on any list. The Christmas special remains a classic and it’s the 75th anniversary this year of the comics!

I do love a good Christmas shortbread cookie too!
