(I first published this piece in February 2019. I’ve added a few extra items near the bottom of my list.)
In the comic book world, Superman was brought to his knees by Kryptonite. He’d be kicking some bad guy’s butt and Lex Luther or one villain or another would sneak some Kryptonite onto the scene and all bets would be off.

Kryptonite, the green, crystal-like mineral would weaken and sicken Superman. He’d be crushed to his knees. Of course, Superman is Superman and he’d eventually figure a way of out of the situation.
I’m no super hero, I’m just a normal every day father, husband, and son, but I can still relate. In real life, several things bring me to my knees, preventing me from living my best life.
See how they compare for you.
–Small talk. (See my blog last week, Talkin’ about small talk, and you’ll understand.)
–Meetings that start late, take too long, and could really have been handled by email.

–Being a perfectionist and pleasing others. I’m a people pleaser. I hate to see others upset. It’s great for client service, it stinks for everything else.
–Snacks between the hours of 5 to 8:30 p.m.
–Pizza and soft pretzels. It’s a Philly thing.

–Fear of failure. I’m an achiever. I like to get things done and check things off my list. No one likes to fail, but I really get bothered by it.
–Being so busy with work, home and everything in between that I’m not able to write. Those conditions all boiled together make for a grumpy Brian.
–Movies that I can’t stop watching. If I’ve seen them once, I’ve seen them a thousand times. Some are great, some are not, but they have a power over me. You know what I’m talking about, everything from Shawshenk Redemption; Ocean’s Eleven; Sweet Home Alabama; Brian’s Song; Notting Hill, and every movie Keanu Reeves has ever made with Point Break and The Replacements at the top of the list. Like a bad accident, I just can’t look away. If I run across them, I’m in for the long haul.
Here’s a few more items from 2025:
–My local Wawa sells Blow Pop Inside Outs. They’re gumballs filled with crushed lollipop gum, Cherry, Watermelon, Grape, and Blue Razz. I see a gumball and I’m like a ten-year-old kid again. Do I need the sugar? No! Do I need the wasted calories? Absolutely no! But the silly gum attracts me every time I stop in Wawa to grab gas or a coffee.
–Personal Improvement books and videos. I’m a “how to” junkie.
–Old photos of my kids. I’ll be cranking out the work. I take a break to check a text and my wife sends me an old picture of the kids. I’ll remember another photo just like it and I’m off to the races looking after photo after photo.
–Well intentions. So many people are looking out for themselves. When someone tries to do something for another person, no matter their faults, I’m on board. I appreciate their sincerity.
Fortunately, like the Man of Steel, I will overcome my weaknesses. I will battle back. I will win out over the forces of evil.

We all have our own Kryptonite, don’t we? Too many to list here, but cheeseburgers for the win.

Oh, I’m so with you! In fact, I was wondering do you have some kind of tie in with Five Guys or other Mom and Pop hamburger shops. YOu should. Every time you show a juicy hamburger on your site, I’m all in. I have to drive out and get a sloppy burger with all the fixings. I’m an adult, right. I have control over my cravings, right. Buzzzzzz, that would be a no. Ha, ha. I’m with you, definitely Kryptonite.

Look, everything in moderation, right? Now, what “moderation” means is a bit up to us!

I take your comment as encouragement to skip the salad I was going to have for lunch and instead go grab a burger and fries. Instead of the giant burger, I’ll get the small patty. Here’s to moderation!

I am aslo a big fan of small bites, so a small slider is what I prefer and only have a burger every few weeks at most…Monday through Friday, when my wife has a crazy filming schedule, we have pan seared salmon, cauliflower rice and broccoli rabe or a chopped salad with no meat or cheese…that allows me a fun day or two as well – tomorrow I am sharing a unique take on an iconic dish – delicious but a bit decadent!

Fog especially this time of the year. Ugh. Hate it when I’m driving. I like it though when I go hiking and come across a fog-filled valley or mountain. Now that wasn’t too bad. Ha, ha.

I have so many and I’m more aware of them the older I get. a few for me are: greasy, crunchy , salty snacks. especially flamin’ hot Cheetos, and chips and onion dip. anything with dip really. small talk, which I know you get. wool clothing. mean people. being cold. pasta, rice, and bread in any form.

Oh you’ve got a great list. I love these Beth. Mean people, yes! Chips and onion dip. You would think I’ve led a sheltered life. But I come across dip and I’m all in. I look like I’ve been on a deserted island for the past month. Ha, ha. Crazy.

Superman didn’t have control of Kryptonite. At least we have a chance taking on the things we do have control over. I will look for you, Brian, the next time I visit Metropolis. Keep flying and don’t tell your wife about Lois Lane!

Oh yes, look for me Dr. Stein. My wife is onto me. She knows that my superman skills leave a lot to be desired. Ha, ha. She’ll probably offer me to Lois Lane free of charge! 🤣😎🤣😎

This is fantastic list Brian, and everything on it is also my kryptonite (except the pretzels and Wawa – we don’t have either of these nearby). However I was sure your movies were all going to be superhero movies, those are the ones I get stuck in, even the old Superman shows from the 1950’s, and Batman from the 1960’s. But Keanu is pretty awesome.

We don’t tend to watch a lot of cable TV anymore . . . but if I come across Point Break somehow I’m all in. It’s hard to turn the TV off. I’m hooked. Crazy, but a fact of life. Ha, ha.

Those Blow Pop Inside Outs sound amazing! I’m going to have to look for those.

Oh I love them. Pure sugar, but absolutely love them. Like when you were a kid and got to the middle of the blow pop . . . but better in my opinion. Ha, ha.

I love the middle of the blow pop!

I enjoyed your list and can relate to a lot of them. Sweet Home Alabama is on my list of movies to watch over and over. I’m definitely going down the old photo hole. I went through all my albums this summer. Now I have a scanner and I’m deciding which ones to digitalize for my photography semester project.

I’m not even sure why I like the movie so much. It’s okay, but certainly not the best that’s ever been made. But every stinking time I come across it, I have to stop and watch it. I’m always drawn to the part where she learns that he’s made something of himself with the glass operation. Always touches me for some reason. And go you with the scanning. That’s so awesome.

It’s such a great love story. Plus I love the contrast between the South and New Yorkers.

I have soooo many things to list as kryptonite…the older I get the more the list grows. I need to knock that list back down a bit…ok, a lot.😁

Great post Brian. I also can’t handle meetings that run on too long or people just wasting time talking about inappropriate matters, it drives me crazy.

I’m with you on the small talk and social gathering. Total kryptonite for me. Fried chicken and potato chips are my equivalent to your pizza and pretzels!

Relatable items. The first thing that comes to mind for me is the intense summer heat. Definitely a kryptonite for me. 🥵

Intense summer heat. Yes, one of the reasons why fall is my favorite time of the year. No cold, cold weather, but yet, no 100 degree temps. Ha, ha. Good one.

What a beautiful post, Brian. Made me smile and nod in agreement. Mine ? Old photos, 80s music, and books that I keep re-reading and many more….Thank you for this.

Oh my goodness, love your additions. Sometimes I have to laugh at myself because I go back to the same books to read. I think I should read something new, but I know that I like them. Ha, ha. 80s music too. It’s generally where I go first. Ha, ha. Thanks for sharing.

Right now its poorly organised/badly run meetings
Im sitting in on an online/Teams training course about enhancing teaching practice but its so boring, the technology is unreliable and for the past 1hr 20, the trainer has just been reading a script

Oh my goodness Brenda, that is the worst. I’m not a numbers cruncher by any stretch, but when that happens, I always look around the room and start to add up the salaries and resources wasted on the meeting. And think of all the better ways the same money could be spent. Ugh. I feel your pain. Hang in there. 🤣😎

Chocolate would be mine! But I am also a perfectionist and a people pleaser. If others aren’t happy, I’m a mess.

Two good ones. I know what you mean about others. I do have my limits. I just don’t like when I’m with family members or friends and they’re not happy. If I can do something to change the mood, I want to help.

Mine is definitely cold black coffee.

What’s the most you’ve ever had in one day. I drink my share of coffee, but I’m thinking you’ve got me beat Edward. Ha, ha. I like a little bit of cream, but I think we’re similar in not liking a ton of other stuff.

Oh my goodness, like six or seven cups. A lot of stress that day and not much sleep. I usually put in a little bit of sugar, but that’s about it.
